Abstract

An account is given of the examination of the polychromed sculpture in the Hedin altarpiece (1466) in Rothenburg old T. (W Germany). Analytical methods used, such as microscopy, wet chemical analysis, infrared spectrophotometry, thin-layer chromatography and gas-liquid chromatography are briefly described. Criteria for identification are summarized. Pigments identified are azurite, indigo, verdigris, green earth, madder, vermilion, red lead, lead white and carbon black. The binding medium is glue in matt areas. In other parts paints are mostly based on a resinous medium with varying amounts of oil. The materials identified in the applique relief brocades are compared with recipes described in the Liber Illuministarius from Tegernsee. Silver foil is used in producing translucent paint.  相似文献

Abstract

A polychromed sculpture was restored and examined. The shrine is made from pine-wood and the sculpture from oak. The ground consists of chalk and animal glue; the pigments are: azurite, a green copper pigment, yellow organic colouring material, orpiment, red lead, vermilion, red organic colouring material, iron oxide red, lead white and charred matter (charcoal ?). Metals used are gold and silver. The medium is on a drying-oil base to which a protein-containing material is added. Generally, the colours were built up in two layers. There is an extensive use of imitation gold, while the use of gold foil is limited to the areas of hair and the flowers on the garments.

In general, the wood in all parts of the object was in good condition and no general impregnation was needed. Cracks in the shrine were filled in with wood or rejoined. The sculpture, which was split in two, was glued together. The condition of the polychromy was relatively good, and only local treatment was required.  相似文献

Abstract

This study describes the examination and analysis of four mixed media paintings from the 1960s and 1970s by Canadian artist Jack Chambers (1931–1978). The documentary evidence about his materials and methods is summarized and compared with the results of analysis of multilayer paint samples. The combination of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) allowed the components of the paint media to be characterized: ortho-phthalate alkyd resins, iso-phthalate alkyd resins, drying oils, dammar, Pinaceae resin, and turpentine were identified in varying proportions. Many pigments and fillers were identified by FTIR and Raman and are enumerated. The effect that Chambers’ complex technique has had on the aging and degradation of the paintings is discussed. The severe cracking of the paint layers in one of the four paintings may be the result of a high proportion of dammar and turpentine diluent mixed with the alkyd paint and may also be related to the type of alkyd resin medium. Different history and environmental conditions may also be factors.  相似文献

Abstract

The study focuses on the range of pigments and media that the Italian artist Lucio Fontana (1899–1968) employed for selected works dating between 1949 and 1968. Samples were taken from ten groups of works, all on canvas support, as well as from painting equipment that survived in the artist's former two studios. Techniques of analysis used were pyrolysis-gas chromatography–mass spectrometry for media identification, and laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and Raman microspectroscopy for pigment identification. Fontana's reputation as a daring and experimental artist, best known for his group of slashed paintings called tagli, is seen to correspond with certain unusual material choices he made. The study also points to several links that exist between seemingly unrelated cycles. These links are, among others, based on experiences with in part novel media such as oil, alkyd, polyvinyl acetate, acrylic, acrylic–vinyl, and mixtures of them. With regard to pigments, the selection of samples showed that they were mostly of a synthetic organic nature.  相似文献

Abstract

Three paintings from a group of thirty-two attributed to Jackson Pollock (1912–1956) were examined at the Harvard Art Museums. Paint samples were examined using Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDX), laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectroscopy (LDI-MS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), pyrolysis–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (py-GCMS) and carbon-14 (C-14) dating. Carbon-14 dating detected no 'bomb' carbon from atmospheric atomic testing. All three paintings contained pigments and media available only after Pollock's death, including PR 254, PY151, and an emulsion copolymer of n-butyl methacrylate and iso-butyl methacrylate.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper presents a comparative investigation of recovery procedures for the analysis of natural organic colorants, encompassing ten major natural organic dye chemical classes, several sample types (silk, wool, cotton, pigment, paint), prepared from the extracts of twelve biological sources, and nine different recovery protocols. These protocols are based on the traditional harsh hydrochloric acid method; on mild hydrolysis methods involving formic, oxalic or hydrofluoric acid; and on methods consecutively employing mild and harsh hydrolysis on the same sample. An evaluation system was developed by classifying analytical results in an upper, middle or lower grade with reference to the best result obtained. This classification was used to calculate scores for each hydrolysis method and for either textile (silk and wool or cotton) or pigment/paint. The best overall hydrolysis method for textile samples was a combination of mild oxalic acid with traditional hydrochloric acid hydrolysis. The best overall hydrolysis method for pigment/paint was a combination of a newly modified mild hydrofluoric acid treatment with traditional hydrochloric acid hydrolysis. The application of these methods to historical samples will not necessarily give the optimal result achievable for every biological source, but will definitely reduce the risk of missing essential information for the elucidation of ancient technology in a geographical and historical context. The reduced level of risk will avoid repetitive sampling and reduce the level of invasiveness, hence taking into account good conservation policies. The potential of these selected methods is illustrated with the analysis of some historical Chinese textile and paint samples.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article discusses how samples of records for laboratory IR experiments on OPACs can be constructed so that results obtained from different experiments can be compared. The literature on laboratory IR experiments seems to indicate that the retrieval effectiveness (recall and precision) is affected by the way the samples of records for such experiments are generated. Especially the amount of records and the subject area coverage of the records seems to affect the retrieval effectiveness. This article contains suggestions for the construction of samples for laboratory IR experiments on OPACs and demonstrates that the retrieval effectiveness is affected by different sample size and composition.  相似文献

Abstract

Burned or cremated sub-fossil bone material is normally handled and treated as unburned bones, although knowledge of physical and chemical properties of bones heated to different temperature levels is limited. Therefore, bones of modern roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) were heated at temperatures ranging from 100 to 1000°C and then exposed to pH 3, 5 and 10. Bone samples from each temperature level were studied, and deterioration was evaluated using weight and hardness measurements. A new method for hardness testing of inhomogeneous materials was used. Significant high weight losses were observed for bone samples heated at 200°C at all three pH values investigated. These were related to the denaturation temperature of bone collagen at 155°C. Regardless of acidity treatment, very low hardnesses (much lower than for unheated bone) were observed for bone samples heated at 400–900°C. At 1000°C increased hardnesses were observed. This has implications for the handling of burned bones. Finally, it is suggested that reported discrepancies in the composition of calcined bone at different burning temperatures may be related to the Ca:P ratio of the initial bone hydroxyapatite before burning.  相似文献

Abstract

Plaster of Paris field jackets are commonly employed for lifting fragile archeological and paleontological material during excavation. When the plaster has been applied directly to the object surface its removal poses a severe risk of damage and loss. This study documents the development of an experimental method to test the suitability of various techniques for removing plaster of Paris from sub-fossil bone. The use of digital microscopic elevation models, already in use in other disciplines, was tested as a method for quantifying surface loss resulting from conservation treatments. The study concludes that citric acid is not suitable for use in close proximity to sub-fossil bone. Air abrasion and laser ablation proved extremely damaging, but ultrasonic cleaning caused no detectable damage. This study has relevance to the removal of plaster of Paris from other materials, such as carbonaceous statuary. The analytical technique itself has a far wider application and is recommended for evaluation of all surface treatments that have the potential to cause loss on a microscopic scale.  相似文献

Abstract

A method for the detection of egg white in binding media by immunofluorescence was tested on laboratory samples. Although the fluorescence was weak, results were found to be reproducible. Tests were then carried out on a series of ancient paintings and polychromies dating from the twelfth century onwards. Some of these samples, including certain blues from Van Eyck's Mystic Lamb, gave a positive response for egg white.  相似文献

Abstract

The weathering of stone monuments results in the leaching of calcite, with a consequent increase in porosity and decrease in integrity. A new method of consolidation uses organic matrix macromolecules extracted from Mytilus californianus shells to induce the precipitation of calcium carbonate within the pores of the stone. The procedure has been tested in the laboratory on samples of bioclastic limestone and dolostone, by measuring changes in total porosity, amount of water absorbed and superficial cohesion. The results appear to confirm the success of the treatment.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Twentieth century paints often contain titanium dioxide and zinc oxide based white pigments that can range from photostable to highly photocatalytic. Photocatalytic pigments can cause the degradation of paint upon UV exposure, whereas photostable pigments may be benign or can protect paintings from degradation. Hence, knowing whether or not a pigment is photocatalytic is of high importance for risk assessment and the subsequent decision making process concerning storage and exposure conditions of objects. Here we present a proof of principle, focused on titanium white paints, for an easy-to-use and low-tech application of a commercial photocatalytic activity indicator ink (PAII) on embedded paint samples or cross sections. This test determines, qualitatively, if a photocatalytic pigment is present in a white paint sample. The PAII paint sample staining application shows an obvious color change, within five minutes of UV irradiation, for paint samples containing photocatalytic pigments. A microscope with a camera and a UV source are the only necessary equipment for the application of this method. A quantitative image processing protocol is also proposed as an extension of the staining method by applying open source software analysis to measure the color change using photographs. The test was evaluated on reference paints with well-characterized pigments and applied on samples from modern paintings by Piet Mondriaan, Robert Ryman, and Lucebert, indicating the presence of harmful photocatalytic pigments in these cases. The novel application of a commercial ink on paint samples offers a simple test, not just for assessment of photocatalytic activity of titanium white pigments, but which may in future be applied for the detection of photoactive forms of zinc white and other potentially harmful semiconductor pigments in art objects.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper examines the impact of relative humidity on jades by enclosing the samples under constant relative humidity (RH) of 32, 49, 61.5, and 81.7% at the same temperature of 40 ± 0.1°C for 160 days. The simulated samples were pure and dense tremolite jade and serpentine jade, impure tremolite jade and serpentine jade containing some calcite, and serpentinized calcite, which are all common materials of ancient jade found in archaeological excavations. All samples were characterized through particle-induced X-ray emission and a glossmeter. The degree of deterioration proved to be greater in impure materials than in pure ones. The best RH to conserve various kinds of materials differs: for pure tremolite and serpentine, all of the RH levels are equal; for impure tremolite with some calcite, 61.5 and 81.7% were superior; for impure serpentine with some calcite, the highest RH (81.7%) was best; and as to the serpentinized calcite, there is no clear conclusion as yet and further research is needed.  相似文献

Abstract

A method is described for the evaluation of the performance of near-infrared imaging devices to detect underdrawing and reworking of paintings. System analyses have been performed on two different ' near-infrared imaging devices: a Hamamatsu lead sulphide vidicon camera and a Photometries silicon charge coupled device (CCD) camera. The analyses included modelling of the system spectral response curve by analysis of the system components, as well as considering the limiting resolution and modulation transfer function (MTF). The modelling was confirmed by examination of a test panel at various wavelengths. Calculation of visibility is introduced as a quantitative measure of system performance. This calculation is also discussed as a means to define more clearly the actual performance requirements of these systems. This analysis has revealed the strengths and weaknesses of current systems, and provides guidance in the construction of improved devices.  相似文献

Abstract

Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the use of web-based information services in university libraries in Kerala, India.

Design/methodology/approach: A survey method was used for the collection of data. The questionnaire method was used to collect data for the study. The study was conducted among the research scholars of four selected universities in Kerala, India.

Findings: This study has analyzed the services and resources in the libraries which are provided through the medium of the internet and also the usage patterns of web information services by the scholars of the selected universities. The analysis reveals that most of the university libraries have implemented web-based information services. However, the extent of usage is not to the expected level and this is due to the lack of sufficient awareness about the usage methods of web resources and services. With the help of proper user education and training programs, the present situation can be ameliorated. The findings of this study can be helpful to the authorities to improve the services in the libraries.

Originality/value: Proper use of library resources is essential for scholars to bring forth productive research outputs. This study provides recommendations for enhancing web-based services in university libraries in Kerala to provide better services to the users.  相似文献

Abstract

Safflower red was prepared by extracting safflower petals (carthamus tinctorius L.) at alkaline pH, after the preliminary removal of water-soluble safflower yellow. Alkaline extracts were used to prepare dyed silk, wool, cotton and paper, to precipitate the pigment, to prepare paint and to produce the antique Chinese cosmetic rouge. All reference samples were analyzed with high-performance liquid chromatography–photodiode array–mass spectrometric detection (HPLC-PDA-MS) after colorant was removed from its substrate by both a harsh and mild acid hydrolysis method. In addition to the red colorant carthamin, four colorless components are markers for safflower. These components were characterized by their retention times, ultraviolet–visible (UV-Vis) spectra and mass spectra and were given the codes Ct1, Ct2, Ct3 and Ct4. Experiments on references clearly indicated that these Ct components, unlike carthamin, withstood harsh acid hydrolysis as well as light-induced accelerated ageing, and that they could be found even in a completely faded wool sample. This made them excellent markers to identify safflower red, even in discolored historical samples or in samples that must be treated in a way that destroys carthamin. These findings may contribute to a better understanding of the manufacturing technology and to better conservation of objects that have already undergone considerable light-induced ageing.  相似文献
