Preservice teachers in a K–8 science methods course used guided video reflection to examine their interactions with children
during science teaching. This inquiry approach helped preservice teachers identify and respond to gaps between their beliefs
and intentions about teaching all children and their enactment of those beliefs. The experience of teaching a science lesson
and then viewing it multiple times through a critical framework provided an opportunity for preservice teachers to recognize
hidden assumptions, unexamined behaviors, and the unintentional meanings they may have conveyed to children. This encouraged
them to think more critically about their roles as teachers in creating spaces where all children have access to quality science
learning experiences.

The Role of Nonprofits in Educational Technology Innovation 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Andrew A. Zucker 《Journal of Science Education and Technology》2009,18(1):37-47
For decades, nonprofit organizations have played a vital role in educational technology innovation. Sesame Street, online high schools, probeware for science and mathematics teaching and learning, and many other innovations now widely
used both in and outside schools were developed by nonprofits, including not only universities but also independent R&D organizations,
such as the Concord Consortium. Within the federal budget, there has been a decade-long trend to reduce both the size and
number of awards made specifically for innovation in educational technology. Small grants, including those for basic research,
are less likely to lead to transformative innovations in teaching and learning than larger, targeted awards for innovation.
At a time when digital tools continue to grow more useful and powerful, and when larger numbers of schools are using them
effectively, it is time for federal agencies to focus additional resources on educational technology innovation.

This article examines the lives of three transnational second-generation immigrant Latinas who reside in urban centers in
California and maintain close ties to Mexico. Drawing from a participatory research and ethnographic study, I provide evidence
of the out-of-school learning that they experience and how this shapes their notions of global citizenship. Although schools
have begun to slowly recognize transnational immigrant students, many urban educators whose cities are palpably transformed
by immigrants have not fully connected the promise of such a global lifestyle and its potential for instruction in the classroom.

Schooling improvement initiatives have demonstrated that moderate but significant achievement gains are possible with well
designed interventions, but there is little research into whether these gains can be sustained. The present study examines
the extent to which acceleration in achievement made during a three-year literacy intervention and the associated school-based
practices were continued. Statistical modelling showed continued acceleration in student achievement (four months in addition
to expected progress) at a rate similar to the intervention. The school-based practices associated with sustainability were
part of a process of change (rather than a specific instructional programme) comprising two dimensions — organisational learning
through ongoing inquiry into solving problems arising from teaching and learning and the development of professional learning
communities to promote organisational learning. Effectiveness was enhanced by schools embedding the process into their normal
school routines as part of a coherent instructional programme and the availability of expertise.

Improving mathematics instruction through lesson study: a theoretical model and North American case 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Catherine C. Lewis Rebecca R. Perry Jacqueline Hurd 《Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education》2009,12(4):285-304
This article presents a theoretical model of lesson study, an approach to instructional improvement that originated in Japan.
The theoretical model includes four lesson study features (investigation, planning, research lesson, and reflection) and three
pathways through which lesson study improves instruction: changes in teachers’ knowledge and beliefs; changes in professional
community; and changes in teaching–learning resources. The model thus suggests that development of teachers’ knowledge and
professional community (not just improved lesson plans) are instructional improvement mechanisms within lesson study. The
theoretical model is used to examine the “auditable trail” of data from a North American lesson study case, yielding evidence
that the lesson study work affected each of the three pathways. We argue that the case provides an “existence proof” of the
potential effectiveness of lesson study outside Japan. Limitations of the case are discussed, including (1) the nature of
data available from the “auditable trail” and (2) generalizability to other lesson study efforts.

Student teaching (guided teaching by a prospective teacher under the supervision of an experienced “cooperating” teacher)
provides an important opportunity for prospective teachers to increase their understanding of mathematics in and for teaching.
The interactions between a student teacher and cooperating teacher provide an obvious mechanism for such learning to occur.
We report here on data that is part of a larger study of eight student teacher/cooperating teacher pairs, and the core themes
that emerged from their conversations. We focus on two pairs for whom the core conversational themes represent disparate approaches
to mathematics in and for teaching. One pair, Blake and Mr. B., focused on controlling student behavior and rarely talked
about mathematics for teaching. The other pair, Tara and Mr. T., focused on having students actively participating in the
lesson and on mathematics from the students’ point of view. These contrasting experiences suggest that student teaching can
have a profound effect on prospective teachers’ understanding of mathematics in and for teaching.

This paper argues that a common sense of purpose around inclusive education, together with a consistent use of language, is
essential if Education for All (EFA) strategies are to become more inclusive. This does not require the introduction of new
techniques; rather it involves: collaboration within and between schools, closer links between schools and communities, networking
across contexts, and the collection and use of contextually relevant evidence. The authors draw on research evidence relating
to teaching and learning, school development, leadership and the development of education systems. This research is mostly
from economically developed contexts, but it is also drawn from the experience of a UNESCO teacher education project which
was conducted in over 80 countries and case study material gathered by the Enabling Education Network (EENET), which supports
practitioners in documenting their experience of working towards more inclusive education, primarily in the countries of the
South.

We engage in a metalogue based on eight papers in this issue of Cultural Studies of Science Education that review the state of conceptual change research and its possible affect on the teaching and learning of science. Our
discussion addresses three aspects of conceptual change research: theoretical, methodological, and practical, as we discuss
conceptual change research in light of our experiences as science educators. Finally, we examine the implications of conceptual
change research for the teachers and students with whom we work.

A research framework for creative and imitative reasoning 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Johan Lithner 《Educational Studies in Mathematics》2008,67(3):255-276
This conceptual research framework addresses the problem of rote learning by characterising key aspects of the dominating
imitative reasoning and the lack of creative mathematical reasoning found in empirical data. By relating reasoning to thinking
processes, student competencies, and the learning milieu it explains origins and consequences of different reasoning types.

This empirical paper considers the different purposes for which teachers use examples in elementary mathematics teaching,
and how well the actual examples used fit these intended purposes. For this study, 24 mathematics lessons taught by prospective
elementary school teachers were videotaped. In the spirit of grounded theory, the purpose of the analysis of these lessons
was to discover, and to construct theories around, the ways that these novice teachers could be seen to draw upon their mathematics
teaching knowledge-base in their lesson preparation and in their observed classroom instruction. A highly-pervasive dimension
of the findings was these teachers’ choice and use of examples. Four categories of uses of examples are identified and exemplified:
these are related to different kinds of teacher awareness.

Faculty experiences of innovative approaches to learning and the changes to their knowledge emerging from such experiences
constitute an important area of inquiry that has to date largely been ignored or has been approached with research methods
ill-suited to examining such experiences. This paper adopts interpretative meta-ethnography as its research framework to investigate
the changes to faculty knowledge that occur when they adopt problem-based learning (PBL). The paper presents themes that emerged
through the analysis and argues for future inquiry.

Learning by observing and imitating others has long been recognized as constituting a powerful learning strategy for humans.
Recent findings from neuroscience research, more specifically on the mirror neuron system, begin to provide insight into the
neural bases of learning by observation and imitation. These findings are discussed here, along with their potential consequences
for the design of instruction, focusing in particular on the effectiveness of dynamic vs. static visualizations.

In this article I explore research in urban science education inspired by the work of Kris Gutierrez in a paper based on her
2005 Scribner Award. It addresses key points in Gutierrez’s work by exploring theoretical frameworks for research and approaches
to teaching and research that expand the discourse on the agency of urban youth in corporate school settings. The work serves
as an overview of under-discussed approaches and theoretical frameworks to consider in teaching and conducting research with
marginalized urban youth in urban science classrooms.

Our 5-year professional development intervention is designed to promote elementary teachers’ knowledge, beliefs, and practices
in teaching science, along with English language and mathematics for English Language Learning (ELL) students in urban schools.
In this study, we used an end-of-year questionnaire as a primary data source to seek teachers’ perspectives on our intervention
during the first year of implementation. Teachers believed that the intervention, including curriculum materials and teacher
workshops, effectively promoted students’ science learning, along with English language development and mathematics learning.
Teachers highlighted strengths and areas needing improvement in the intervention. Teachers’ perspectives have been incorporated
into our on-going intervention efforts and offer insights into features of effective professional development initiatives
in improving science achievement for all students.

This article reviews significant contributions made by Joe L. Kincheloe to critical research in science education, especially
through a multimethodological, multitheoretical, and multidisciplinary informed lens that incorporates social, cultural, political,
economic, and cognitive dynamics—the bricolage. Kincheloe’s ideas provide for a compelling understanding of, and insights
into, the forces that shape the intricacies of teaching and learning science and science education. They have implications
in improving science education policies, in developing actions that challenge and cultivate the intellect while operating
in ways that are more understanding of difference and are socially just.
Gillian U. Bayne is an assistant professor of science education at Lehman College, City University of New York. Having also completed a master’s degree in secondary science education at New York University, she has taught science both in New York City’s public school system and in independent schools for over 10 years. Gillian’s research interests are focused on the utilization of cogenerative dialogues with high school and college students, their teachers and other stakeholders to improve science teaching and learning. 相似文献

In this rejoinder to Bryan Brown and John Reveles, we highlight the facts that (a) sociocultural theories of learning do not
go far enough because they fail to address a number of issues and (b) we require concepts such as power and positionality
to understand science learning.

Representatives from more than 20 institutions making up a research and teaching network met to discuss and investigate a
web application designed to promote knowledge sharing and understanding. The web application, called Fieldtrip, enables students,
professors and researchers to virtually share their experiences and findings from real field trips. This study investigates
how professors from the network conceived Fieldtrip and their approach to designing and teaching student learning experiences
using it. Results show that the professors had divergent understandings of the potential of the web application, and that
qualitatively better ways of conceiving Fieldtrip were related to more robust approaches to design for learning and teaching.
The implications of this study as an exploration into professor experiences of web applications are important if universities
wish to make the best use of technologies in learning for their students and professors.

This article examines Mary Budd Rowe’s groundbreaking and far-reaching contributions to science education. Rowe is best known
for her research on wait-time: the idea that teachers can improve the quality and length of classroom discussions by waiting
at least 3 s before and after student responses. Her wait-time research grew from and helped inform her staunch advocacy of
science education as inquiry; Rowe saw wonder and excitement as central to the teaching and learning of science. She spent
much of her professional life designing professional development experiences and innovative curriculum materials to help teachers,
particularly elementary school teachers, enact inquiry in their classrooms.
