Abstract During the 2001-2002 academic year, Augustana College Library (Rock Island, IL) and St. Ambrose University Library (Davenport, IA) began a unique joint venture of peer observation between the reference staff members of the two libraries. Librarians from each college took turns visiting the other library and conducting peer observations of reference desk service. Although the reasons each library had for initiating this venture differed, both libraries benefited from this project. This article discusses the development of the program, the results, and plans for the future. 相似文献

Since 2007, Brigham Young University Library has provided a paid internship program for undergraduates that allows them to work with a librarian in an academic setting to help them decide if they wish to pursue a master's degree in Library Science. This article describes the internship program and provides results of surveys given to both interns and library mentors regarding their expectations and outcomes. In a new addition to the program, interns now meet with multiple librarians to gain a broad understanding of library work and how different library areas function together. 相似文献

Summary This article examines the role a university library plays in planning the student support services that are so crucial to a successful distance learning program. The content of the paper is based on the experience the author acquired as a member of Texas Tech University's Distance Learning Council. The Council's efforts to plan, prioritize, and develop a distance learning program that will include strong support from the Library are emphasized. Abstract This paper describes a model program at DePaul University of partnering the Library with an academic department, specifically the School for New Learning. This department was established solely to serve the non-traditional adult student and lifelong learner. The historical background of adult education, the development of the School for New Learning, the shared goal of the Library and the department, the history and development of the partnership, the role of the library liaison, and how the partnership has changed the curriculum and library programs are discussed. This article begins with an overview of Bournemouth University's pioneering Peer Assisted Learning Scheme (PAL) and describes how in 2005/06 the library became involved, collaborating with the PAL Coordinator to develop materials for use by PAL Leaders. PAL is intended to foster cross-year support between students on the same course. It encourages students to support each other and learn cooperatively under the guidance of trained students from the year above—called PAL Leaders. Two documents were produced to support and empower these leaders. The first, Using the Library for Your Research, provides leaders with key guidance information on the University Library, its resources and the services it provides. The second, Citing References Using the Harvard System, aims to explain and demystify the Harvard referencing system and to encourage good referencing habits in students from an early stage of their course through a practical hands-on exercise. Feedback from PAL Leaders continues to inform the development of these guidance materials, in particular the referencing exercise that was reworked to better suit the needs of the leaders delivering it. 相似文献

The Auraria Library, which serves the University of Colorado Denver, Metropolitan State College of Denver and the Community College of Denver, collaborated with several academic courses on its campus to investigate some aspects of Participatory Action Research and Service Learning. The goal was to have students (the largest library user group) formulate questions, analyze data and provide suggestions that would help the library make evidence based decisions. The projects would provide student produced information that would be used to renovate the library. Unexpected benefits included the valuable relationships that developed between the Auraria Library, students and teaching faculty. 相似文献

Dr. Ken Haycock directs the recently created Master of Management in Library and Information Science (MMLIS) program in the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California. As the only LIS program located in a major business school, the MMLIS is focused on integrating business skills with traditional library and information science to graduate students who are prepared for leadership roles in the profession. The MMLIS program requires students to have prior work experience. Students work in teams to solve real world problems and also choose an independent project. ABSTRACTThis article discusses an experience of the University of Central Florida (UCF) Library when hosting a visiting librarian from Tongji University Library in Shanghai, China, in 2015. Unlike most other visiting programs in the U.S., UCF's hosting experience offers a year-long, broad-based training in several functional areas facilitated by library administration and two bilingual librarians. The initial goals were to promote dialogue and understanding between the academic systems of the two countries, and ultimately to enhance the international users' library experience in their quest to study at foreign institutions. Through describing this visiting program and discussing its findings and assessments, the authors concluded longer term visiting programs like this can benefit both the visiting and hosting libraries and bridge the gap of academic libraries across the world. 相似文献

[目的/意义]调查目前国内高校图书馆开展同伴教育服务的现状及存在的问题,并根据问题提出相应的发展策略,拓展高校图书馆为学生群体服务的渠道,促进服务创新。[方法/过程]综合42所一流大学图书馆的网站调查和29个省市的254所高校图书馆的问卷调查两种方式,对国内高校图书馆同伴教育服务现状进行调查和分析。[结果/结论]目前,国内高校图书馆同伴教育服务各方面发展不成熟,处于初级发展阶段。为保障同伴教育的发展,要从思想上充分认识同伴教育的重要性,重视同伴导师的招聘和培训,图书馆应给予人力、资金的支持以及加强与校内其他同伴教育项目的合作,建立有效的评估机制并充分发挥同伴导师在新媒体环境下的优势。 相似文献

NHS knowledge and library staff are a highly specialist workforce delivering an economic benefit of £77 million per annum to the health service in England. To achieve their full potential and meet the changing needs of the NHS, it is vital that the workforce remains up to date through the continuing development of their skills, knowledge, and behaviours. This article outlines the work of Health Education England to gain Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP—The Library and Information Association) quality accreditation for the short course offers delivered through the NHS Knowledge for Healthcare Learning Academy. It summarises the benefits of this accreditation for Health Education England, for employers, and for knowledge and library staff participating in the short courses. Lifelong learning is not a new term; many colleges and universities in the United States have lifelong learning programs or departments, such as the Lifelong Learning College at the University of Indianapolis, or an Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. At one Midwestern University, lifelong learning is part of the University mission statement, which spurred the creation of a new position in the Library—Lifelong Learning Librarian. Discussions with the Dean of the Library and colleagues, however, indicated that there was no consensus on campus as to what lifelong learning means for the University's students. The author conducted an analysis of 228 citations from a library literature database and a content analysis of 137 PDFs from that set in order to discover how library professionals use the term lifelong learning in published literature. Results indicate two potential paths for developing the new librarian position on campus. 相似文献

Like most of its peer institutions, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries faced the challenge of meeting the needs of a growing number of students taking online courses. The author, hired as the new Virtual Learning Librarian in January 2016, was charged with creating a new Virtual Learning Program. This tutorials-based program was first fully implemented in a fully online Entomology graduate program.
