This article considers the responses of women, many of whom describe themselves as housewives, in the 1949 Mass Observation Television Directive, in order to interrogate some of the broader assumptions around television's relationship with ‘the housewife’ as key to its success. Against the backcloth of social histories revising ideas about gender, modernity and suburbia in the post-war period, this article considers some of the ways in which initial reluctance towards television was recorded and negotiated. It presents three themes around tensions between home and leisure, the domestication of entertainment and ‘going out’, and the appreciation of particular genre, which suggest that the adoption of television as mass entertainment by women might not have been as smooth a process as we have come to understand. 相似文献

This article offers a unique study of the material form of the television receiver between the 1930s and 1960s. Very little has been written to date on the history of the television set as an artefact. Yet its design and appearance played a major role in the acceptance of television in the home. The meanings of television sets are explored, from the design of wooden cabinets as family furniture to the shaping of portable sets as symbols of progress. A case study of British events is conducted, with reference made to American and other nations’ developments in so far as they relate to Britain's television receiver history. The article confirms that the material form of the television receiver contributed to a narrative of domesticity and progress by reconfiguring the relationship between home and communication technology. The fusion of craft and futurist ideas in design reflected tensions about the receiver as an expression of traditional domestic values, of progress and modernity, and as an icon. 相似文献

This article identifies some of the dominant features of European avant-garde radio from the late 1920s through to the 1990s: namely, montage, the radical/irrational language technique of glossolalia, and sound distortion. These features can be seen to establish connections between the works, techniques, and practices of radio producers in several European countries and enable one to understand the distinctive nature of experimental radio art. Periodically, technology develops what is touted as a new medium which makes all others obsolete. Television was going to erase radio, tape was going to do away with disc recordings, and quadrasonic sound will do away with stereo which in turn replaced monaural recording methods. Getting the most attention on these lines now is cable television and the competing methods of home video recording—cartridges, cassettes, videodiscs etc. In the following article, Mr. Christians, a Ph.D. candidate in communications at the University of Illinois, suggests that the so‐called home video “revolution” is really nothing of the kind—but rather more of the same content and controlling interests merely wrapped in different garb. 相似文献

This article contends that researchers can and should be active participants in making sound archives more accessible. In fact, such advocacy can be consequential in setting up possibilities for creative research on race within radio history and sound studies. Using the example of NPR’s All Things Considered archive spanning from 1971–1983, I demonstrate how academics and archivists can work together to make possible the preservation and accessibility of sound archives. This particular collaboration offers an opportunity to take a cultural approach to understanding newsroom diversity, more specifically: the cultural constraints of linguistic norms and the emergent cultures that arise as aberrations from such norms. The article reflects on this project’s implications for other scholars who work with archives that wish to invest in sound archive preservation and use. 相似文献

近年来国际学术界在本体对应研究方面呈现三个主要特征:一是投入了更多关注,使相关研究日臻成熟;二是在开放语义网络环境下,研究人员更青睐于多本体的匹配与对应,并且本体对应已成为学术界构建适于分布式网络结构的多本体协同系统的主要手段;三是越来越多的研究成果已经从基础理论研究转向了针对具体问题的实证研究。但开放性、分布式的语义Web环境对现有不同本体间的协调应用提出了挑战。通过对2000年以来国际学术界关于本体协调相关文献和研究成果的梳理,阐明了以本体映射为核心的本体协调各要素之间的关系,并对本体合并、本体集成与本体对应三条本体协调主要发展路径的前沿热点进行了分析,指出未来本体协调的相关研究将继续沿着"本体构建→本体合并→本体集成→本体对应"这一总体路径向前发展。 相似文献
