Course management system software has much to offer the faculty and students in universities that adopt this technology. Libraries have used this technology to provide links to library resources, but they can also have a role in implementing the adoption of the course management software. The Penn State College of Medicine successfully implemented the ANGEL course management system under the guidance of a medical librarian. Tasks specific to the librarian included communication and promotion of ANGEL, in addition to providing training and technical support. 相似文献

This study was designed to test the effects of skills training and experience on communication satisfaction and communication anxiety in the basic speech course. Skills training was operationalized as completion of COMM 15000, Theory and Practice of Oral Discourse, and experience was operationalized as multiple rhetorical performances. The results showed that students of the basic speech course experienced an increase in communication satisfaction and a decrease in communication anxiety following skills training for this sample. Moreover, highly apprehensive students reported being more satisfied with their communication interchanges following completion of the basic speech course. 相似文献

Objectives
This study assessed the need to develop a public health informatics (PHI) introductory course and determine contents of such a course.Methods
Community assessments employing focus group interviews and an online survey were utilized to determine course need and content.Results
Results revealed a need to provide PHI training to graduate public health students and suggested broad course content requirements. Results indicated lack of awareness of libraries and librarians as sources of public health information.Conclusions

New competencies are required for communication in the digital environment. However, technology and training disparities prevent many young people from obtaining these competencies. Outreach services can help bridge technology and training gaps. This article describes outreach services for students who are underserved in information and digital literacy skills training. ABSTRACT Librarians at the University of Central Missouri were invited to provide research assistance for an online history course delivered through the Blackboard course management system. In consultation with the course instructor, it was decided that we would serve as “embedded librarians,” offering online tutorials on library resources and providing research assistance to students as they worked on a short research paper assignment. Our experiences with the course instructor and with students have provided us with some clear insights into the particular challenges that librarians face in an online course environment. 相似文献

[目的/意义]对文献数据库用户心智模型演进的驱动因素结构进行测量。[方法/过程]研究采用问卷调查法收集483份关于文献数据库用户对其心智模型演进驱动因素认知的问卷,采用二阶验证性因素分析方法对收集到的数据进行分析。[结果/结论]研究发现文献数据库用户心智模型的驱动因素有文献数据库界面引导与提示、自我摸索、与同学交流、文献数据库信息服务产品、搜索引擎学习迁移、简单信息检索任务、复杂信息检索任务、信息检索课程、请教老师、图书馆信息检索培训和购物网站学习迁移。这些因素对用户心智模型演进的重要性依次升高。此外,由于用户心智模型构成维度的复合性,每种驱动因素对文献数据库内容认知、信息检索方法认知、信息检索结果筛选的影响都存在差异。研究结果可为文献数据库的界面优化设计和用户信息素养培训提供指导建议。 相似文献

ABSTRACT Libraries have been struggling for years to move beyond 1-shot library training. In spite of efforts in the last decade to promote information literacy for undergraduate and graduate students alike, libraries more often than not are still not reaching the goals articulated in the Association of College & Research Libraries's information literacy standards. The problems are compounded when institutions serve students who also happen to be taking part or all of their classes online or at field-based sites. The model for providing a library training program for students in the Doctor of Education (EdD) program in a distance program focuses on providing students with training that builds sequentially and developmentally at the points of need for students in the 1st year of classes and provides additional support for students once they have completed their course work. ABSTRACTIowa Wesleyan University (IW) has historically struggled with both assessment and supporting online students. Newly-appointed librarians and an impending re-accreditation visit prompted an increase in involvement and presence with assessment. In an attempt to expand the library's influence on campus, librarians took on a nontraditional role in the institutional implementation of LiveText, an assessment software. Librarians at IW have played an active and integral role in not only the initial roll-out of this software, but also in training and continuing support for students and faculty. Because of its importance to institutional learning outcomes, information fluency (IF) is being recognized as a high-impact practice across disciplines, and based on the results of this case study, librarians will pursue the creation of a required online IF course for online learners. 相似文献

ABSTRACT In fall 1997, the University of Washington Bothell Library piloted a home-grown Electronic Reserves project to better meet the needs of its non-traditional population, consisting largely of returning, working, and/or commuting students. As the number of students commuting from greater distances increased, the need to provide remote access to course materials 24-hours a day became essential. Since no additional funding was received, the pilot began with only four classes. This enabled librarians to become familiar with the technology without being overwhelmed by demand. In-class demonstrations were provided, and quarterly surveys were distributed to students and faculty participating in the project. Results were analyzed over several quarters to determine the benefits to students and faculty. By fall 1998, 33 courses or 80% of reserves were available electronically. Issues that developed from the pilot included: (1) increased printing in the library and computer labs, (2) development of training classes for students; and (3) staff reorganization to provide the service. 相似文献

This experimental study examines an online module designed to increase student competence in oral citation behavior using a mastery training strategy. Students in the experimental condition provided complete citations at a higher rate and provided more citation information for traditional and web-based sources compared with a control group without required training. Although subjective norms set by instructors also influence citation behavior, the general trend depicted was that students completing the required module training performed more complete citations. Implications for student learning, mastery instruction, and course assessment were considered to be generally beneficial and at minimal cost. 相似文献

ABSTRACTOpen education resources represent a great opportunity to reduce textbook costs, but many of them have not been evaluated for quality. Librarians and former students in an introduction to engineering course collected and evaluated open education resources to supplement the course textbook in future semesters. Background
This research reports on the NICE Evidence search (ES) student champion scheme (SCS) first five years of activity (2011–2016) in terms of its impact on health care undergraduate students’ information search skills and search confidence.Objectives
A review of students’ evaluation of the scheme was carried out to chart the changes in attitude towards NICE Evidence search as an online health care information source and to monitor students’ approach to information seeking.Methods
This study is based on the results of questionnaires distributed to students before and after attending a training session on NICE Evidence search delivered by their own peers. The exercise was implemented in health related universities in England over a period of five consecutive academic years.Results
(i) Students’ search confidence improved considerably after the training; (ii) ES was perceived as being an increasingly useful resource of evidence based information for their studies; (iii) the training helped students develop discerning search skills and use evidence based information sources more consistently and critically.Conclusions
The NICE SCS improves confidence in approaching information tasks amongst health care undergraduate students. Future developments could involve offering the training at the onset of a course of study and adopting online delivery formats to expand its geographical reach. 相似文献19.
This case study explores services academic libraries provide to students with disabilities and the impact these can have on the success and experience of these students. The study focuses on staff training and outreach programming. The authors examine the academic library literature surrounding these topics, provide examples of programming initiatives at the University of Tennessee Libraries, and include a curated list of local and national resources for supporting people with disabilities. Strategies are recommended for working with local and campus organizations to provide training and resources within the library along with suggestions for strengthening support services for this growing population. 相似文献

As fall 2020 semester approached, librarians at Colorado School of Mines faced the task of transitioning the information literacy lesson for the university's Design I course to a fully virtual lesson. In previous semesters, the lesson had successfully been taught using a flipped model; pairing an online lesson with an in-person librarian meeting. Each semester approximately 600 students in teams of five met with a librarian to discuss their approach to the course's semester-long project. Due to COVID-19, the team conducted more than 120 team meetings online using Zoom in fall 2020. Surveys were administered to students in the course to gauge their opinions on meeting success, librarian helpfulness and sign-up logistics. The findings provide insight into the use of an online meeting to meet the needs of students in a project-based engineering design course. 相似文献
