The purpose of the study was to assess the relative effectiveness of print, sign, and pictures in the transfer of reading-related information to children who are deaf. By means of personal computers, deaf children were presented CD-ROM-generated stories in four different formats: print only, print plus pictures, print plus sign language, and print plus pictures plus sign. A repeated-measure design was used to analyze participants' reading comprehension performance. Significant differences were found among the four presentation options. One observed phenomenon was that participants would switch from American Sign Language to Signed English when analyzing text. The study findings suggest that presenting stories on CD-ROM with multiple modes of reading cues, such as print, pictures, and sign language, may be an enjoyable and interesting supplement to standard reading practices.  相似文献

CD-ROM storybooks, often referred to as electronic texts, e-books, and interactive stories, are learning tools with supplemental features such as automatic reading of text, sound effects, word pronunciations, and graphic animations which support the development of reading skills and comprehension in beginning readers. Some CD-ROM storybooks also provide a definition of the word to aid in vocabulary acquisition. However, over-reliance on these features may hinder development of a young reader’s decoding skills and use of context cues. Many CD-ROM storybooks contain incidental hotspots, such as dancing flowers and hidden characters, which distract from the storyline and take reader’s attention away from comprehension. These incidental features may prolong the reading event causing fatigue and loss of focus. In sum, the features provided by CD-ROM storybooks offer valuable support for the acquisition of reading skills when coupled with supervision to monitor overuse and direct instruction in comprehension strategies.  相似文献

A CD-ROM containing a resource library for students of a course on "Information Technology and Society" has been produced by a multidisciplinary team at the Open University. This inter-faculty course adopts a resource-based approach to its subject, and students are encouraged to search the contents of the CD-ROM to find material relevant to the topics they are studying. To facilitate this searching, the articles in the library are electronically indexed using a set of course-related themes. The development of the CD-ROM gave rise to a number of issues: the content, which was based on printed publications, had to be adapted to suit the electronic medium; methods had to be devised to ensure the quality of the delivered product; and the roles of staff had to be adapted to accommodate electronic production methods. Feedback from students, via the course's conferencing system and a course survey, shows that the CD-ROM was well received, and that students adapted successfully to the resource-based approach.  相似文献

Traditional approaches to teaching exercise physiology are costly in terms of staff time and consumable expenses. Ethical considerations, large student numbers and availability of technical expertise magnify the delivery problems. In an attempt to overcome these problems, a CD-ROM version of a basic course in exercise physiology was designed and delivered to a group of undergraduate sport and exercise science students. It simulated five tests of aerobic endurance which are traditionally taught using laboratory methods. A controlled experiment was conducted to compare the two delivery methods, as part of an independent, formative evaluation. Although there were equal knowledge gains and the CD-ROM design and content were well rated by students who used it, this approach has engendered less student interaction, commitment to wider reading and in-depth understanding. Tutorials and other approaches designed to promote more active learning are now being introduced to accompany the use of the CD-ROM.  相似文献

This paper is based on a presentation at the NSEAD/AAIAD Millennium Conference in Bristol, April 2000 and takes as its focus a recent multimedia publication, a CD-ROM, commissioned by Glasgow 1999, entitled ‘Scanning the City’. The commission was to find effective ways that students in schools could interrogate the diverse urban fabric of Glasgow. The electronic revolution has shifted the paradigms of teaching and learning by creating the opportunity to engage interactively with visual and textual data in ways that permit investigation of the built environments at a number of levels of intensity. The paper explains the background to the CD-ROM, describes the design, content and theoretical underpinning of ‘Scanning the City’ and discusses ways it might be used in a variety of educational contexts. It concludes by looking forward to the next stages of the research including a study of how young people and teachers are using the CD-ROM and other related multimedia publications.  相似文献

This study describes one teacher's use of multimedia, specifically CD-ROM talking books, in the classroom. The goal of the investigation was to reveal and analyse how a primary (Grade 3) teacher integrated CD-ROM books into her curriculum. Issues emerging from the study included how features of the software interact with features of classrooms, how patterns of instruction are affected by the infusion of technology, and how students interact with the software, and each other, while reading the CD- ROM books  相似文献

This article investigates the nature of language learning using CD-ROM packages. The research explores cognitive processes and alternative learning experiences which contrast with conventional delivery modes in foreign language teaching. The article concludes that CD-ROM can promote vocabulary acquisition, pronunciation and independent learning and has a major contribution to make to the development of language teaching and learning.  相似文献

This article reports on a naturalistic study of online and CD-ROM databases to identify design characteristics that are important to high school students' use of these information resources for higher-level learning as well as for information access and retrieval. Primary data collection techniques were interactive observations of 92 students and informal interviews with 54 students, 4 teachers, and the school library media specialist. The article presents an inventory of specific problems students experienced while using 7 CD-ROM and 18 online databases and discusses implications for database design based on the study results. By showing how the lens of instructional systems design can be applied to the study of a specific information technology, this article provides a new perspective on database design and suggests how electronic information resources can be designed to promote higher-level learning through enhancing students' opportunities to process, evaluate, and apply the information they retrieve from these resources. The paper on which this article was based received the 1993 AECT Special Research Award for qualitative research.  相似文献

Great claims have been made for the ability of information technology and computers to transform methods of teaching and learning in higher education. In order to assess the impact of such technology to date it is important to distinguish between different applications — specifically, computers as a teaching aid, computers as a means of delivering instruction, and computers as a learning tool. It is argued that information technology has had limited success in the first application, the second has produced few changes in traditional teaching practice, while student use of computers as a tool for learning has immense potential. Current applications of computers in university teaching are reviewed, achievements and problems examined, and conclusions are drawn about possible developments for the future.

This article describes the insights gained by a group of primary teachers investigating the implications of CD-ROM for English with their KS2 pupils. As part of the IT in English project, they researched pupils' use of the CD-ROM and its effect on their learning. They developed effective strategies to help pupils cope with the reading demands and edit their own texts. Positive effects on critical reading, collaboration, and use of conventional information books were observed.  相似文献

There is a wealth of interventions focusing on the intensive use of computers in secondary schools, largely aiming at improving students’ performance. However, global evidence on the effects of the use of computers on attitudinal outcomes has not been synthesised so far. Taking into account that the differences in the attitudes of boys and girls regarding the use of computers are one of the factors described as causes of the low number of girls following ICT studies, the aim of this article is to review the evidence on the effects of intensive use of computers in schools on gender differences in attitudes outcomes: anxiety, enjoyment, self-confidence and self-efficacy. Searches generated a total of 740 citations of which 59 were identified as relevant and nine were finally included. The methodological quality of included studies was poor to moderate. The results suggest that despite the intensive use of computers, boys are favoured in computer anxiety, self-confidence and self-efficacy; and suggest no differences in computer enjoyment. There is no evidence that intensive use of computers reduce gender differences in these outcomes. Further policy recommendations should be rooted on robust evaluations, which take into account implementations parameters, as well.  相似文献

Some of the most prominent policies in schools throughout the industrialized world today relate to the rapid introduction of computers. The most common rationale for introducing educational microcomputing is the concept of ‘computer literacy’. It is a concept, however, which is so poorly defined and delineated, and so unclear as to purpose and procedure, that it may best be investigated as a form of ideology. The justificatory arguments for computers in classrooms are primarily vocational or practical. They are based on assumptions that computers will be pervasive in the workplace of the future, or that they are soon going to be ‘everywhere’. The more purely pedagogical arguments are secondary: that learning about computers is a worthwhile experience in and of itself, and that computers can be useful productivity tools for other academic work. Drawing upon empirical evidence from an evaluation of computer use in two Canadian high schools, this paper shows how a critical treatment of computer literacy as ideology raises important issues about the computerization of education. It suggests that educators should question whether they have simply taken the ideology of computer literacy at face value, and whether this almost universal policy has received the critical attention it deserves.  相似文献
