ABSTRACT

Undergraduate students are increasingly being asked to conduct higher-level research in their areas of study. In order to address undergraduate needs, many academic librarians, especially those charged with crafting instruction, take critical thinking as a given in the teaching of information literacy skills. However, this review of the literature has revealed that, though there was some discussion of critical thinking in a library context in the mid 1980s, the concept did not really take hold until the 1990s, when higher education reform began to appear on many campuses. Additionally, the literature regarding critical thinking skills during this period exhibits four themes: (1) a lack of agreement among librarians and others on what critical thinking is and how it can be defined, (2) the importance of subject and course integration in the teaching of critical thinking skills in libraries, (3) the necessity of reaching undergraduate students, and (4) the special challenges of teaching critical thinking skills in an age when technology is changing so rapidly.  相似文献

Summary

The Internet has brought great changes to reference services in academic libraries. One significant impact has been the growth and evolution of the reference librarian's role as teacher. This article reviews the literature on the librarian's increased teaching role with the emergence of the Internet, discusses the changing student populations who require a librarian's instruction and the skills that students need to achieve information literacy, and reviews how the Internet has affected current teaching strategies including classroom instruction, Web-based instruction, and efforts to integrate information literacy instruction into the curriculum. In addition, it also introduces emerging Internet technologies with their potential impact on teaching and instruction. The authors conclude that the reference librarian's teaching role will further increase with the development of information technologies.  相似文献

教学方法是教学过程的重要组成部分,是联系教师教和学生学的重要纽带,对于提升教学效果和质量具有关键作用。对24位湖北大学档案学本科生进行了半结构化深度访谈,运用扎根理论对访谈内容进行三级编码,归纳概括出档案学本科生专业课程教学方法满意度影响因素,包括课程、教师、学生和环境四个维度,并探究四个维度间的关系,构建了影响因素模型。基于这些影响因素结合教育学相关理论,为改进档案学本科专业课程的教学方法提出了相应建议,期望为高校档案学本科专业课程教学质量的提高提供可行思路和一定参考。  相似文献

Abstract

Because of the global COVID-19 pandemic during the spring of 2020, colleges and universities found themselves rapidly moving all courses to online modalities, a format that many instructors were not experienced in or comfortable with. Academic librarians were called upon to help support faculty in this sudden transition, as well as migrating their own library services and instruction online. For many, it felt like a mad scramble to find best practices for online teaching, or even just “good-enough” practices, as well as specific tools that instructional faculty and librarians could utilize to keep their students engaged and learning during such a trying time. At the time of this writing, some universities have announced that they will continue to hold most, if not all, courses online in the fall 2020 term. Resources to support online teaching are critical now, and they will continue to be important going forward even after the global pandemic subsides. The reviews in this column cover a variety of online instructional tools and instructional support sites. The resources reviewed range from providing best practices for online pedagogy, creating engaging formative assessment tools, developing video discussion boards, creating interactive images, using virtual bulletin boards for student collaboration, and ensuring online content meets accessibility requirements. These resources will be useful for librarians and instructional faculty as they continue to teach in the online environment.  相似文献

Many academic libraries are expanding services to online and distance students to keep pace with enrollment trends in higher education, prompting additional research to evaluate the use and effectiveness of library reference and instruction services to distance users. This literature review explores this research from the perspectives of academic librarians, distance students, and faculty teaching online and distance courses, and finds both commonalities and contradictions among these viewpoints.  相似文献

This study examined research and instruction services provided by academic health sciences librarians in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 205 respondents (N = 205) completed an anonymous online survey about academic health sciences librarian involvement in providing research and instruction services during the global pandemic. In-depth literature searching services (86%, n = 176), curated COVID-19 research through guides (66%, n = 135), and systematic review consultations (53%, n = 109) were reported as the top three research services in demand. Librarians supported online teaching and learning at their institutions by providing online instruction for a course (92%, n = 189), facilitating access to licensed resources (73%, n = 150), and identifying open access and open educational resources (62%, n = 127). Overall, this study contributes to understanding pandemic-responsive academic library services to meet the unique needs of health sciences education and research in evolving COVID-19 pandemic information environments.  相似文献

This literature review is international in scope and reviews articles published from 2000 through 2009. This paper looks into the possibility of teaching university students special courses on a range of subjects that would reflect the reality of today’s information society. We present a list and a brief content of these disciplines concerning information technology and information protection. A focus is made on a positive outcome, which is likely to be achieved in teaching the Contemporary Innovation Technology courses in Russian universities. [目的/意义]运用文献调研方法,对2000年以来国内外研究生信息素养教学实践研究论文进行归纳梳理,探讨教学模式及教学内容变化新趋势,为国内同行开展研究生信息素养教育提供参考。[方法/过程]分别以Web of Science平台的SCI-E及SSCI数据库和中国知网的中国学术期刊网络出版总库为研究对象,收集国内外自2000年以来发表的有关研究生信息素养教育的期刊论文,通过分析研究生信息素养教学模式与教学内容,总结新环境下研究生信息素养教育的主要研究成果。[结果/结论]近年来嵌入式信息素养教育得到进一步应用与推广,基于学习项目或研究任务的信息素养教育、基于同伴培训的信息素养教育及"翻转课堂"的应用具有借鉴意义,而文献综述与写作技能、科技查新、数据素养等可以作为信息素养教育的拓展。研究生信息素养教育应以课程教学为主,开展更广泛的合作,尤其是引入写作、出版方面的专家;重视与专业课程结合,培养专业技能及信息能力;仍要重视研究生检索技能的培养并需要系统的信息素养评价工具或评价体系来测试研究生信息素养能力及评估信息素养教育效果。  相似文献

This case study evaluates the process of developing modules for inclusion in a learning management system that are informed by the Association of College and Research Libraries Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education (2015). A replicable, transparent process was used to match more task-oriented topics suggested by librarians and teaching faculty to the Framework. As more and more students receive instruction online it is important for academic libraries to provide robust services to those users within the LMS as well as outside of it. By providing instruction within the LMS that is tied to the Framework, and by using digital badges to make the exploration of information literacy more obvious to students, instructors, and librarians, libraries can develop instruction that meets users at their point of need and provides content while lowering the need for direct librarian involvement in all online courses.  相似文献

[目的/意义]对比分析中美高校医学信息学本科、硕士教育概况,为我国未来医学信息学教育提供参考和借鉴。[方法/过程]以院校开设时间、院校层次为筛选标准,从中美开展医学信息学教育的高校中各选取10所代表性高校为研究对象,通过网络调研,从基本要求、课程设置、师资力量、教育教学方式、就业前景等方面对中美医学信息学本科、硕士教育概况进行综合分析。[结果/结论]我国医学信息学本硕教育虽经历几十年的探索和实践并取得一定成就,但与美国相比,我国还存在一些不足,如在入学基本要求方面,注重本科教育,高层次人才培养体系不完善;在课程设置方面,课程内容设置单调,非医学基础课程占比过高,学科交叉融合不明显;在师资力量方面,教师学科背景单一,职称结构分布不平衡;在教育教学方式方面,教师教学方式简单,学生实践机会较少;在就业前景方面,学生知识体系不系统,就业前景局限。未来我国应顺应大数据科学研究范式发展要求,加快培养高层次医学信息学人才;改善课程体系和内容设置,拓宽学科知识体系;优化师资力量配置,吸引多学科背景人才;丰富培养方式,注重理论与实践相结合。  相似文献

[目的/意义] 在新时代高校本科教育改革的背景下,北京大学信息管理系以数字人文教育为试验点,开设"数字人文"课程,为数字人文课程教学提供参考,对数字人文教育进行探索。[方法/过程] 介绍并总结该课程的培养目标、内容设置和特色等,以此探讨数字人文课程建设对于图书馆学、情报学学科,以及本科教育改革的示范性作用。[结果/结论] 对数字人文课程建设提出建议,包括组建教师团队、打造应用场景和将数字人文课程作为基础素质教育课程等。  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Librarians play a key role in undergraduate research yet there is infrequent collaboration using this key group of stakeholders in assigning and researching term papers. This case study reviews the impact of faculty and librarian collaboration in assigning and completing research projects in two upper level political science courses. Library instruction was primarily delivered—once at the beginning and then again in the middle of the semester. The research demonstrates how with active learning techniques, audience polling, and encouraging class participation from the students, our goal was to improve the quality of sources and help the students become better independent researchers.  相似文献

This paper highlights how one small, private university reached out to its international students through bibliographic instruction (BI) workshops, as well as through library instruction in the English Language (ELI) classes. The history and content of the workshops are discussed, as well as guidelines for making them successful. International students, who are not able to attend the workshops, receive BI in their ELI classes. Projects in undergraduate research programs differ from assignments in courses in that they are independent of an institution's curriculum, and faculty mentoring plays a more important role. These programs can be fertile ground for librarians interested in participating. Whether such librarians would make good mentors for undergraduate researchers depends largely on their experience and education. Texas Tech University has two of these programs, but library support for them has been sporadic. The time is overdue for librarians involved in campus outreach and instruction to examine how they can best support Texas Tech's undergraduate research activities, and, in particular, whether they are adequately prepared to provide effective mentoring to undergraduate research students. Research articles seem to have direct value for students in some subject areas, even though scholars may be their target audience. If this can be proven to be true, then subject areas with this type of educational impact could justify claims for enhanced funding. To seek evidence of disciplinary differences in the direct educational uptake of journal articles, but ignoring books, conference papers, and other scholarly outputs, this paper assesses the total number and proportions of student readers of academic articles in Mendeley across 12 different subjects. The results suggest that whilst few students read mathematics research articles, in other areas, the number of student readers is broadly proportional to the number of research readers. Although the differences in the average numbers of undergraduate readers of articles varies by up to 50 times between subjects, this could be explained by the differing levels of uptake of Mendeley rather than the differing educational value of disciplinary research. Overall, then, the results do not support the claim that journal articles in some areas have substantially more educational value than average for academia, compared with their research value.  相似文献

[目的/意义]通过对国外高校图书馆嵌入式教学服务现状和具体案例进行分析,为我国高校图书馆开展嵌入式教学服务提供借鉴与参考。[方法/过程]使用网络调研法和文献调研法,对国外高校图书馆嵌入式教学服务的典型案例进行选择与分析。[结果/结论] 国外高校图书馆的嵌入式教学服务实践开展得广泛深入,为我国提供了很好的经验。我国高校图书馆应积极开展嵌入式教学服务,在实践过程中注重嵌入式教学服务的目标规划和课程设计,采用以学生为主导的基于问题的教学方法,建立完善的考核和评价体系,充分利用新的信息环境和信息技术为教学和学习提供更好的支持。  相似文献
