Anhydrobiosis     
In aquatic and moist soil environments subjected to periodic drying, a diverse group of organisms (mostly microscopic) have evolved extreme desiccation tolerance through a physiological adaptation called ‘anhydrobiosis’. Notable among such organisms are tardigrades, bdelloid rotifers, and nematodes. Anhydrobiosis also allows these organisms to tolerate extreme temperatures and ionizing radiation. In this article, the signi-cance and some mechanisms of anhydrobiosis are described.  相似文献

Basic work in universities is carried out in departments representing diverse disciplinary communities. While tasks, goals, perspectives, and social values may vary considerably between different disciplines, it is difficult to find research texts dealing with the question whether, and how, such differences should be taken into account in quality management. The paper is based on a recent study on quality management in diverse disciplinary settings, in which thirty-three interviews have been carried out in Finland and in the UK, and on the author's previous studies on the disciplines under study. The paper provides some preliminary interpretations of the effects of basic disciplinary features on the suitability of approaches of quality assessment in four diverse disciplines (physics, biology, sociology and history).  相似文献

通过对沙打旺种植地的调查,发现有11科25属37种蜘蛛.7月上、中旬出现的优势种为印痕球蛛(Theridion impressum),7月下旬出现的有条纹花蟹蛛(Xysticus striatipes)和黑侏儒蛛(Meioneta nigra),8月下旬偶见有田野豹蛛(Pardosa agrestis),但在4块样地内,自8月初到9月初,优势种基本上为条纹花蟹蛛.分析了蜘蛛生物学特性、植被情况、土壤情况和人事活动对蜘蛛群落结构和优势种群消长变化的影响,分析的结果可为草地害虫的综合防治提供参考.  相似文献

Outdoor education practice around the world occurs in diverse circumstances, environments and cultures. The application of outdoor education to specific cultural and environmental issues in particular places and communities has received little attention in research. While research in fields such as cultural geography has addressed the relationships between cultures, communities and geographical places, this is largely overlooked in outdoor education research. In this paper I draw on literature from cultural history and environmental history to explore how these disciplines might inform outdoor education research and pedagogy that addresses current cultural and environmental issues of specific communities and geographical places. With the aid of the rhizome metaphor for (re)structuring knowledge, I use examples from my practice in Australia to demonstrate how reading the landscape and the use of stories, or historical accounts, can assist outdoor educators and participants to probe and reflect on the relationships between personal experience and the complex cultural-ecological processes that have shaped the places in which we live and work.  相似文献

The introduction of school counseling services into traditional communities that are unfamiliar with counseling is a complex multidimensional process that involves considerable ideological tensions, disputes and obstacles... This paper considers the different trajectories of the recent development of counseling services within two distinctive minority groups in Israel-Arab and the Ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities. The dynamics of the change process for these traditional communities within the current Israeli social–political context lends support for the advancement of the international counseling community’s vision to promote human welfare and fairness as well as the healthy development of children and youth within diverse cultural contexts. Schools are becoming culturally and linguistically diverse. This means that pre-service teachers should be exposed to methods that prepare them for diverse classrooms. This article outlines a service-learning checklist that is practical and authentic to use in working with diverse communities. Faculty can adopt the checklist when infusing service-learning into their course. Since its inception in the early nineteenth century, early childhood education has moved beyond European communities and become institutionalized in countries such as Australian, India, Malaysia, New Zealand and Singapore. At the same time, many European countries have experienced migration, and now have broadly based culturally and linguistically diverse communities. Although early education has continued to evolve over time, some fundamental principles about the nature of learning have remained static. In drawing upon cultural‐historical theory, this paper seeks to make visible early childhood institutional practices that may no longer be relevant, particularly when western theory and middle‐class practices are not representative of the culturally and linguistically diverse communities they serve. In this paper, an alternative model of child development is offered that takes into account and values the diversity of children’s cultural experiences.  相似文献

There is widespread agreement within the scientific and education communities that undergraduate biology curricula fall short in providing students with the quantitative and interdisciplinary problem-solving skills they need to obtain a deep understanding of biological phenomena and be prepared fully to contribute to future scientific inquiry. MathBench Biology Modules were designed to address these needs through a series of interactive, Web-based modules that can be used to supplement existing course content across the biological sciences curriculum. The effect of the modules was assessed in an introductory biology course at the University of Maryland. Over the course of the semester, students showed significant increases in quantitative skills that were independent of previous math course work. Students also showed increased comfort with solving quantitative problems, whether or not they ultimately arrived at the correct answer. A survey of spring 2009 graduates indicated that those who had experienced MathBench in their course work had a greater appreciation for the role of mathematics in modern biology than those who had not used MathBench. MathBench modules allow students from diverse educational backgrounds to hone their quantitative skills, preparing them for more complex mathematical approaches in upper-division courses.  相似文献

The aspirations of critical management learning are individual and societal transformation, with hopes for non-hierarchical learning communities. This article reflects on the experiences of running a critical management development programme with managers from diverse backgrounds, presenting six case studies of black women, whose experiences raise challenges for the liberatory intentions of critical management learning. Some found the programme positive, but others found it disempowering. In seeking to understand these experiences, and the differences between them, feminist pedagogy provides insights into gendered power relations which critical education neglects. However, for a business school context, with a widely diverse student group, it is argued that deeper insights are offered within anti-racist pedagogy and the concept of habitus.  相似文献

What is a gene?     
The first part of this article traced the evolution of the concept of a gene from Mendel’s times to the middle of this century: starting from the imaginaryfactors of Mendel, thegenes were shown, in the first few decades of this century, to be physical entities many of which were linked in a linear order on a single chromosome. Each of these were believed to be indivisible units of function, mutation and recombination. Subsequent studies in microorganisms as well as higher organisms revealed the gene to be divisible in all its properties. Theclassical concept of indivisible gene thus gave way to something with a more complex organization. The advent of molecular biology allowed more detailed studies on the organization of the gene and the way it functions. In keeping with the remarkable diversity and complexity of biological systems, thegene has also turned out to be equally diverse and fascinating.  相似文献

An investigation was conducted, for the entire Federal Republic of Germany, on the use of living organisms in biological instruction. Besides the scope and manner in which living organisms are used, the expenditure of time and material by teachers was examined and teachers’ views of the value of including living organisms in biology instruction were ascertained. In addition, it was determined whether there are verifiable differences among the various types of schools, among schools located in differently sized communities, and also among schools of different size. Abstract

Purpose: Why do farmers not take better care of their soils? This article aims to give insight into how farmers look at soil quality management.

Design/methodology/approach: It analyses diverse land management practices and visions on soils and soil quality of ten agroecological and 14 conventional smallholder farmers in Araponga, Minas Gerais, Brazil. As agroecological farming (that is, managing soils with minimum use of external inputs) requires more complex knowledge, it is assumed that agroecological farmers would be more knowledgeable on soils compared to conventional farmers. This case study tests the hypothesis that differences in land management practices between agroecological and conventional farmers can be explained by differences in their knowledge on soils.

Findings: The hypothesis turned out to be faulty: agroecological and conventional farmers do not differ in what they know about soils, but how they use their knowledge in their farming strategy. Both groups of farmers have different but rational farming strategies.

Practical implications: Designing policies and measures to make farming more environmentally friendly and more sustainable as two-way knowledge exchange between farmers and science (and not as one-way knowledge transfer from science to farmers), to benefit from vital and context-based farmers’ knowledge and to ensure successful implementation of more sustainable land management practices.

Originality/value: By analysing farmers’ visions on soil quality management and farming strategies, this study shows that farmers’ knowledge is valuable for farmers, for scientific knowledge on soil quality management and for policies which are to be effective and adapted to the local environment.  相似文献

Urban populations that live in the outskirts of major Latin American cities usually face conditions of vulnerability attached to complex environmental issues, such as the lack of sewerage, floods, pollution and soil and water contamination. This article reports an intervention research programme in São Paulo, Brazil that combines a moral education approach with sustainability awareness in vulnerable communities. The main conceptual foundations of the project, designed to empower the community and promote ethical and environmental awareness are: strengthening the ties between the school and the surrounding community in order to construct ‘moral atmosphere’; adoption of Problem- and Project-based Learning and the Design Thinking approach to reach the proposed goals.  相似文献
