Love is one of the themes of Dickinson’s poetry. Love is both sweet and painful, both strong and lingering described in her works. In the poem "Wild Nights: Wild Nights!" the speaker reveals all her innermost feelings to her love. Love is expressed in an unabashed manner. Emily Dickinson, one of the most celebrated American poets, writes nearly 1800 poems during her lifetime. Her poetry,a flower rooted in Puritanism, expresses the poetess’s love for life, mediation on nature and religion, and longing for beauty and truth.Along with Walt Whitman,Dickinson is regarded as the pioneer of American modernistic poetry. However, studies on such a great poet are mainly from the perspective of literary criticism, and few of them are from the linguistic approach. This thesis will give a detailed analysis of one of her poems in the perspective of deviation,so as to reveal her unique stylistic features.  相似文献

By the brief introduction of Kate Chopin and her achievement, this paper elaborates the awakening of consciousness of the feminism of the protagonist in Kate Chopin’s The Story of an Hour. In the short story, the author uses many literary elements to describe the characters, especially the irony and imagery. This thesis uses those rhetorical devices to vividly describe the characters and to criticize the inequality between men and women in the late 19th century.[1]  相似文献

Anne Bradstreet, the first American poet,is popular among the puritan community.Yet a close examination of her poetry reveals her belying inconsistency with the Puritan values. While Puritan community devoted itself to the religious, disliked virtually every kind of recreation including literature and prejudiced against the female,Anne Bradstreet passionately expresses the secular pains and joys and firmly asserts the role of the poetry and the female. Her popularity among the Puritans both proves a success of her strategy and indicates Puritan society’s certain flexibility and tolerance.  相似文献

William Wordsworth was the representative of the British "Lake poets" In his poems he aimed at simplicity and purity of the language, fighting against the conventional forms of the 18th century poetry. He transformed his observation of the landscape into the revelation of the beauty of nature in poetry, and thus expressed his nature philosophy. In this article the author briefly analyses the organization of his poem: "Ode: Intimation of Immortality" and mainly elaborates her understanding of the poet’s na-ture-philosophy in four points:(a) Man is sensitive to all natural influences in childhood.(b) Nature has a moral and spiritual sig-nificance and helps the poet understand the mystery of human life.(c) Life is but a stage.(d) All good poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings;it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility.  相似文献

Sympathy is one of the essential themes that George Eliot discusses in her novels. She uses various effective narrative strategies for the emergence of that theme. This paper, based on a close reading on the passage from Middlemarch, explores one of them——the incarnation of the narrator as a character. In Middlemarch, the narrator, as a character, both shows sympathy to the characters and asks for sympathy from the readers. To show his sympathy to the characters, he provides his comprehensive analysis of the characters and authorizes his characters to present their opinions. To ask for the sympathy, he directly addresses to the readers, uses free indirect speech in the narration, and expresses his own emotions. By the strategy of incarnation of the narrator as a character, Eliot clearly presents the readers her purpose of writing.  相似文献

Plato and Aristotle are both great philosophers in Greek, and Plato is the teacher of Aristotle. But their attitudes to the philosophy and art are quite different from each other. In Plato’s point of view, all poets should be rebelled out of his republic as they will lead the ordinary people to a wrong way;but to Aristotle, poets and the poetry they write should be admired because they will make good effects on the people and the society. This paper is going to discuss about their different attitudes to the so cial function of the poetry in three aspects:the content and the effect of the poetry;the nature of poetry.  相似文献

Thomas Hardy is an outstanding novelist in the nineteenth century. He has produced numerous works including novels and poetry. His tragic novel Tess of the d’Urbervilles has a great impact on the world literature. The paper is focused on the exploration of Tess’s tragedy through her life experiences.Tess’s tragedy can be illustrated by three factors—her family aspects, love experiences and her social images, which also contribute collectively to poor Tess’s destiny. The social background of the period provides a basis for the novel, and the deformed social values and morality is the root of her tragedy, together with her personal temperament and the Christian religious influences.Christian mores of self-sacrifice,wide love and purity have a great effect on characters in the novel. In the fourth part, there is some enlightenment from Tess’s tragedy. It is believed that women play a crucial role in society.Tess is a woman with good qualities and her experiences give a warning to women today:the proper treatment of one’s behaviors and the social rules is critical.  相似文献

According to Lakoff et al, metaphor is the main mechanism through which we comprehend abstract concepts and perform abstract reasoning. As a great poet, Robert Frost realized the cognitive functions of metaphors and used them frequently and skillfully in his poetry. By doing so, he was able to convey abstract and philosophical reflections through simple language and enrich the theme of his poetry. This thesis conducts a survey of the definitions of metaphors and makes an analysis of the metaphors employed by Frost in his poetry, trying to answer two questions: 1) How does the use of metaphor help to convey the poet’s abstract and profound philosophical reflections? 2) How does the use of metaphor help to enrich the themes of Frost’s poetry?  相似文献
