This paper aims at exploring college students’ English learning motivation to language learning, including effort, interest, and attitudes. To some extent, it is very important to perform activities in language learning classes. On the one hand, teachers should do every effort to develop students’ keen interest in English study so as to foster their intrinsic motivation. On the other hand, they should set up new goals for students and feedback properly in order to build confidence in English learning. In a word, it is essential for English teachers to understand students’ motivation of English learning so as to save time and teach more efficiently.  相似文献

Various studies have found that motivation has a close relationship with students’achievement. The relationship between motivation and learning is interactive,it is agreed that students who have strong motivation, and they are more likely to make more effort in learning than others. We can safely conclude that motivation is a necessary condition when learning a foreign language.A real learning  相似文献

The Role of Motivation in Language Learning   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The role of motivation in language learning has been studied since the 1960s. It is indeed one of the most important areas of linguistics. This paper suggests strategies of motivating language learners and focuses on the role which motivation can play in language learning. The concept of motivation from different points of view is defined, a number of suggestions on how to motivate language learners are presented and the role of motivation based on various motivational theories are highlighted. With regard to the role of motivation in language learning, it is concluded that motivation plays an increasingly important role in many aspects, such as identifying with the target language society, achieving long-term and short-term goals, improving language learners‘ internal and external powers and exerting a group force. It also indicates that there should be more research areas to be examined and a long way is probably requlred to go in future theoretical and practical study.  相似文献

In foreign language teaching,it has always been found that there are many language learners whose second language(L2)level remains stagnant or even becomes worse no matter how hard they try. However, this may not relate to their attention given to language but to interlanguage fossilization, which results from various causes,is ubiquitous in second language acquisition(SLA)and foreign language learning. This paper, based on the empirical evidence of language learning and acquisition, probes into the nature and characteristics of interlanguage, analyzes the main causes of fossilization, and discusses pedagogical implications for avoiding fossilization in English language learning.  相似文献

Since linguistics is defined as the scientific study of language, it is obvious that such a study would help a lot in language teaching and learning. Linguistics defines the nature of language learning in connection with various linguistic theories therefore it helps the teachers to choose teaching methods and techniques. Furthermore, the process of linguistic study can be summarized as follows: First, certain linguistic facts are observed, which are found to display some similarities and generalizations, hypotheses are formulated to account for these facts; and then make sure these hypotheses; finally a rule of linguistics is constructed. Our students are doing the same. They imitated what the teacher did and did what the teacher told them to. At last, they bear the usage of English in minds.  相似文献

For many years now," autonomy" in learning has been a topic of widespread discussion in educational field.Accordingly,it is Henry Holec who introduced learner autonomy to the field of second language in his project report to the Council of Europe in 1981.Motivation is also a widely used psychological term in our daily life and research. Both learner autonomy and motivation are important factors in influencing learning effects. Many researchers conduct studies on learner autonomy and motivation. There are also some studies on the correlation between learner autonomy and motivation in SLL(Second Language Learning). However, few of them focus on the effect of learner autonomy on motivation. Thus,it makes an attempt to investigate whether learner autonomy has an enhancement effect on motivation. It combines motivation and learner autonomy together to find some effective and efficient ways of promoting foreign or second language learning. In another way,it enriches learner autonomy research. It holds that learner autonomy is a very important factor in influencing motivation. It will make a combination between learner autonomy and motivation in SLL to find some new ways of promoting learners’ motivation and learning efficiency.A survey methodology has been employed which consists of qualitative and quantitative methods.Specifically, both questionnaire and interview have been conducted in the research.  相似文献

As the old saying goes that interest is the best teacher and it is quite true that the students’initiative in learning is diffi cult to spur without interest.English is the most widely used language in the world, and people are aware of the importance and necessity in English learning. But English is a second language to us,so learning it is more difficult than the acquiring of our na tive language.Interest is the internal power to spur students’learning. So how to spur the students’s interest in engliash learning is the main prblem discussing in it.  相似文献

Linguistics is a necessary course for English-majors because it plays an important role in second language learning, teaching and research. It is significant, yet difficult to make this course comprehensible and interesting and get the students involved in and attracted by it. This paper intends to analyze and explore teachers’ roles in the course of linguistics from the following aspects: as an explainer, as an activator, as a co-learner, as a question-finder and as an enabler. Some examples are taken to show how to make use of comparison, contrast, instance, discussion, and practice for classroom management. What’s important for a teacher of linguistics is not only to understand linguistic theories and carry on linguistic research by him- or herself, but also to make his or her students get to know the nature of language and learn to do scientific studies of language by themselves.  相似文献

What's in a name? SLA stands for Second Language Acquisition. Researchers working in this area are primarily concerned with understanding how people acquire a second language, both in terms of the processes they go through and the learning outcomes. The term SLA can be interpreted in a narrow way to mean the study of a language learned in a naturalistic setting after a first language has been acquired.A typical example of this  相似文献

What every brick is for grande building, vocabulary is for the foundation laid for the acquisition of one language. It follows that authentic expressions are justified by the mastery of its application in a specific context. Therefore,it is crucial to delve into the process of vocabulary acquisition, that is,the effect of students’input and output.Words’meanings varied in distinct contexts.Starting from the above two aspects, this paper illustrates the understanding of learning words through examples,so as to optimize the word learning method to achieve twice the result with half the effort.  相似文献

Learning vocabulary is learning how words relate to external reality and how they relate to one another. Every language interprets the physical world in its own way and intralinguistic relations vary from language to language too. So complex is the semantic structure of a language that it can be acquired only through wide exposure and this in turn can probably only be provided by extensiue reading.  相似文献

Since 1970s,the research on second language acquisition has been developed with times. The research focus of lLanguage teach ing has shifted from the study of how to teach students to how to learn for students, with particular attention to explore the influence that students’psychological factors such as learning motivation, learning attitude and learning anxiety have on learning outcomes.Among those emotional variables, anxiety is considered to be one of the most critical psychological variables.English classroom anxiety is different from the ordinary classroom anxiety and receives much attention from scholars.Horwiz(1986) pointed out that foreign language anxiety is a unique phenomenon in language learning. In China,English learning in senior high school is a very important period. It is a common phenomenon to see students behaving anxiously in the English class. Therefore, the anxiety in the English class of senior high school de serves attention. This paper will analyze the main reasons of students’anxiety and points out several effectively methods to relieve their anxiety so as to enhance English classroom teaching and learning effect.  相似文献

Cultural differences have a great effect on English learning, especially on college English reading.Reading is a crucial tool in acquiring information and knowledge.Culture cannot be separated from language.College English reading should focus on the differences of culture. It is important to understand how to lay stress on the differences in the course of college English teaching and learning about reading for increasing students’ ability of reading. This thesis analyzes the influence of culture on English reading and tries to set up a principle of teaching English through culture. To support my point of view, the relationship between language and culture is discussed first.Language is a part of culture and shaped by culture;it is also the carrier of culture and reflects cultural features of a community in which the language is spoken.Language and culture are closely related with each other. From the aspect of language teaching and learning,to teach a foreign language is to teach another culture;to learn a language is also to learn another culture.  相似文献

When to immerge students in the target language community is a hot issue debated by many researchers through the whole linguistic and second language research history. While as far as my hypothesis concerned,I argue that it’s a better way for second language learners to learn some basic language skills before getting involved in that language community, including the target culture, fundamental second language skills, and first language abilities.Meanwhile,I demonstrate my argument from four aspects:age factors, first language factors, cultural factors and motivational factors. And I argue that English learners receive late immersion perform as well as or better than children in early immersion programs, since there is a direct relationship between native language and second language learning. As long as second language learners are literate in their first language, then their abilities in first language can facilitate the second language learning and can discipline themselves in the process of how to learn a second language.Meanwhile, transmitting cultural knowledge plays an important role in second language learning, and the most suitable approach is to do preparing transmission before students entering the real cultural community,i.e.the preparing work should be done before students getting involved in the language community;otherwise they may catch the cultural shock and are reluctant to explore the target culture. This paper aims at finding a most comfortable and preferable environment for learners to learn a second language and providing parents who are planning to send their children abroad some feasible advice.  相似文献

In the course of learning English in classroom, students cultivate their ability to use the language. But that ability does not mean they are able to acquire that language in a communicative way, because the acquisition of language in classroom is mainly for the purpose of learning. It starts and ends in a particular circumstance-the classroom. In that case, analyzed and discussed is the universal feature of English acquisition in classroom and its effects on practical use respectively.  相似文献

The results of a great deal of research have suggested that language learning strategies can be taught and that instructing learning strategies and integrating them into regular instruction can greatly facilitate the learning of a second/foreign language. The aim of this article is to draw the readers’ attention to strategic teaching that should be introduced in the foreign language classroom in order to meet the demands of contemporary language education. In particular, it points to the necessity that teachers should change their attitudes towards the roles they play in the classroom to become truly responsible for their learning.  相似文献

As two of the most important abilities of language competence, speaking and writing remain two domains in which EFL researchers and language teachers show great interest.Though it is widely accepted that speaking and writing are related processes,to what extent they are correlated remains controversial.the present study is undertaken to explore the relationship which is inherent in speaking and writing and to provide reference for the promotion of positive interaction between them in EFL teaching, based on the cognitive theory and the theories of language learning.  相似文献

Aiming at solving the problems of lacking listening skills practices in English class. The paper is written for two purposes. Firstly, it intends to drive the attention of present obstacles in English listening teaching. Most children in China have their English classes at schools, however, they don’t learn too much English they just learn about English. After years of learning the problems come up: the college students who have passed CET4(College English Test) and CET6 are unable to speak or listen to native speakers. Secondly, it tries to introduce the listening skills and the methods of teaching it. Language is not a knowledge but a skill, to learn language does not mean to know as many rules and information about it, but is to practice from the first day your learn it and do practice as much as possible.  相似文献
