The two English versions of Lu Xun’s stories, translated by Julia Lovell and the Rangs, are to be studied from the ecotranslatological perspective. A comparative study of the two English versions is made to figure out how the two translators linguistically and culturally make adaptive selections in the process of translation of Lu Xun’s stories—In other words, how the eco-environment has greatly influenced the two translators’ decisions to make adaptations and choices in linguistic and cultural aspects. The thesis discovers that the eco-environment has greatly influenced the process of translating Lu Xun’s stories into English and eco-translatology is feasible to analyze the two translations, that both the Yangs and Lovell have offered successful translations by making adaptive selections and selective transformations. Therefore, neither of the two translations is superior or inferior to one another in different translational eco- environments. Hopefully, the thesis may enrich current researches on the Yang’s and Lovell’s translations and may be useful for the further study of applying eco-translatology to studies on other translators and their works.  相似文献

For the Chinese versions of Hamlet, Liang Shiqiu’s and Zhu Shenghao’s translations can be called the classic. Because the two great translators have their own choices, their versions differ a lot. In the translating process, translator’s subjectivity plays an important role and it is one of the major reasons for emerging different translation. The thesis mainly talks about Liang Shiqiu’s and Zhu Shenghao’s different versions from the perspective of translator’s subjectivity by comparison.  相似文献

A film title is an essential part of a film.Compared with the translation of book titles and news headings, film title translation has been received far less attention, especially the rendering of Chinese film titles into English versions. Therefore, the thesis aims to study Chinese film title translation in the framework of norm theory and investigate the strategies adopted by translators.  相似文献

People have different points of view on the criteria applicable to poetry translation. This paper focuses on what kind of principle should be followed in poetry translation. It starts with a brief introduction of one interesting dispute over the standards and criteria applicable to poetry translation.Based upon a brief summary of the two conflicting theories raised by Professor Xu Yuanchong(许渊冲)and Professor Liu Yingkai(刘英凯),this paper compares two Chinese versions of Thomas Hardy’s"The Darkling Thrush"for the purpose of establishing the idea that"faithfulness"should be treated as the paramount principle and criteria in poetry translation.  相似文献

The English writings of many translators are not accepted by the readers. The reason is that there is no correct translation idea, the literal translation is the main reason, and the thinking of the text is not suitable for the original text. This paper takes "the green crisis" as an example, discusses the problems in the translation of Contemporary English, and puts forward the skills of translating English books to these questions.  相似文献

This thesis explores the translation of three categories of British humour—universal, cultural and linguistic humour in the light of GTVH(General Theory of Verbal Humour) and Relevance Theory. GTVH benefits the study of humour translation by providing an analytical framework of six Knowledge Resources which include Language(LA), Narrative Strategy(NS), Target(TA), Situation(SI), Logical Mechanism(LM) and Script Opposition(SO). The hierarchy of Knowledge Resources is used to make an analysis of the internal structure of humour and Relevance theory functions as a translation theory to check whether the translation is appropriate to achieve optimal relevance. Taking the translation examples from British TV sitcoms"Yes, Prime Minister"and"Little Britain",the thesis probes into the most important Knowledge Resources in these three kinds of humour respectively, analyzes the loss and gain of humour reproduction in fansubbers' translation and makes a few adjustments to some inappropriate translation versions to"achieve the maximization of relevance".  相似文献

The present study applies Dr.He Yuanjian’s CMT(Conceptual Mapping Theory) to focus on the strategy use of translating Chinese folklore concepts in Hong Lou Meng(i.e.indigenous concepts related to etiquettes and customs) by Yang Xianyi and his wife Gladys Yang on the observations of the translators’strategies and the distributional tendencies of translation strategies so as to testify CMT on empirical grounds.Whether it holds true that the preservation of the alien source concepts through translation depends on how successfully they are mapped into the target conceptual system leads to the attempts to study on the distributional tendency of translation strategies of translation tasks, especially,of translating folkloric concepts in this paper. As a result, the tentative outcome of the data observed supports that the concept-mediation theoretic approach to translation process seems able to account for how cognitive constraints affect the production of mapping the unshared concepts.  相似文献

As a method of bridging language and culture, translation has played a significant part in connecting the ideas of people all over the world and accelerating the communication in politics, economy, culture, education, science and technology. China has increased cultural exchanges with many other countries, and a great number of foreign films have flooded into our country. Thus, how to appropriately translate the foreign films becomes an urgent issue. In the process of translating English films to Chinese ones, the translator should use a method to attend to the content of the movie itself, especially recreational artistic features, as well as tremendous differences between English language and Chinese language culture. This paper attempts to compare the different film versions of Pride and Prejudice (edition 1995), and analyzes the examples of literal translation and free translation in order to reveal the difficulty of which translation method to choose in film translation. Thus, based on the comparison, we could get a tentative result that which kind of film version is more accepted by most audiences so that we can provide the film translators some new train of thought.  相似文献

The translation of an instrument from one language to another is a challenging yet useful procedure, especially for constructs not widely studied in the target language. Culture shock is one such construct. The Culture Shock Questionnaire (CSQ) developed in England was translated to Turkish. Translation/back translation with 12 translators, the committee approach, and empirical testing in the university student population were the techniques employed. The results support CSQ as a potential instrument in the Turkish language as well as suggest that challenges in the translation of a research instrument, like challenges in the translation of other texts, involve serious dilemmas about the extent of loyalty to the original instrument. The current study recommends the use of multiple techniques in translation and reports on committee decisions in detail.  相似文献

International publicity translation, functioning as a means of information dissemination to international communities,is an important tool skillfully employed by translators who undertake an occupation in international publicity translation. However,in the concrete practice of international publicity translation, not all translators can proficiently employ the tool,we can find many mis?translations, and the reasons can be traced back to the translators’fuzzy knowledge of the features of international publicity transla?tion.Compared with other kinds of translation, the following two points should be emphasized:1)international publicity translation should achieve the purpose of positively disseminating the situation of China.2)translators should pay special attention to differ?ences between China and other countries, including national condition, culture and language. Thus, translators should pay attention to the cross-cultural feature and adopt special strategies in translation.  相似文献

What is the essence of translating activities?Up to now, many scholars or translators have conducted this study. This thesis aims to study the essence of translating activities from a new perspective—Marxism’s Practice Viewpoint.Translating is a kind of language activity of reproduction, using another language to retell the content of the original accurately and completely. The author also makes his comments on the debate as to whether translating is a science or an art.The conclusion is that translating is neither an art nor a science. It is an activity marked by artistic creativity and scientific creativity,a scientific and artistic unity.  相似文献

Hong Lou Meng is one of the four greatest classical novels of China. Since the appearance of the book, more and more people have been interested in it and have begun to study the book from different point of views. Then a new subject-redology, namely the study of the book- comes out. Hong Lou Meng, as representing the peak of the development in the tranditional chinese realistic novels, has been translated into many languages. Nowdays, there are only two versions of the translation that consists of the whole 120 chapters of the book: one is entitled A Dream of Red Mansions translated by Yang Hsien-yi and his wife Gladys Yang; the one with the title The Story of the Stone is translated by David Hawkes and John Minford. From the view of culture, the book Hong Lou Meng is a great collection of chinese traditional culture, and it reflects the tradition, the religion, the festivals, the tea culture, and the medicine culture and as well as the opera and poem s of chines people. But viewing the translation versions, different people have different translations to the same culture elements. This paper, beginning from this point, makes a first study about the translatiuon subjectivity sense, that leads to this translation differences.  相似文献

Idioms are gems of a language which have been refined through ages of use. Idioms are thus always rich in cultural connotation and national flavor. Lots of cultural information is embedded in idioms. Language is a part of culture. Language is the important carrier of culture. Language and culture have close relationship with each other. The study of the relationship between language and culture has been considered a subject of great value. Owing to this, translation theorists and translators have put more attention to the cultural barriers that exist in translation. Therefore, translators have to better understand the relationship between language and culture and the relationship between culture and translation so as to render idioms from the SL into the TL faithfully and effectively.  相似文献

only lies in its deep theme and striking arrangement of events, but also in her accurate and vivid language. In order to study the differences between English and Chinese,This thesis is focused on two Chinese versions of Whuthering Heights in the light of contrastive linguistics. The detailed version comparison consists of two parts: the comparison between two Chinese versions in lexicology and syntax. After comparing two versions, the author noted that both Yang and Lu still commit some mistakes because of ignorance of linguistic and cultural differences between English and Chinese and in view of this mistakes, the paper offers some revised translation texts for reference only. The author hopes that the comparison results may be beneficial to cross-culture communication and English learning.  相似文献
