Nonfiction for children and young adults long suffered from a reputation for dullness in both content and presentation. In
recent years, however, the genre has been re-created with entertaining writing, focused treatment of subjects, supplementary
backmatter, and an emphasis on design and illustration. In this article, a nonfiction writer describes some methods for making
such books exciting and readable.
James Cross Giblin is the author of eleven, nonfiction books for young readers, many of which have won awards and honors.
His two most recent titles areThe Truth About Unicorns andThe Riddle of the Rosetta Stome: Key to Ancient Egypt. Mr. Giblin is also contributing editor at Clarion Books, and he lectures frequently at conferences of librarians, teachers,

Promoting lifelong reading, learning, and library use is a goal of most youth-serving librarians. The Young Adult Services
Department of the Mesa, Arizona, Public Library is finding that more teens are entering adulthood each year as library users
and supporters, and they are bringing their children to the library, too. This article shares a YA librarian's perspectives
on how to provide successful reader advisory for teens and how to get young adults to read on their own, building the foundation
of a lifelong interest in reading, an interest passed from generation to generation. Building this foundation depends on dedicated,
well-trained specialists in YA library service, the publication of well-written and attractive books for teens, school and
public library administrative support.
Diane P. Tuccillo has been head of the Young Adults Services Adult Services Department at the Mesa (Arizona) Public Library

Historical fiction, fiction about contemporary people of other cultures, and nonfiction trade books can increase children's
interest in social studies and enhance their knowledge. Dianne Monson and Kathleen Howe discuss the ways that these books
appeal to young readers and lead them to seek further understanding of historical events, foreign cultures, and Americans
from different cultural backgrounds. They offer numerous examples of books that serve this purpose for several social studies
topics.
Kathleen Howe completed her doctorate at the University of Minnesota. Her dissertation dealt with the use of children's literature
trade books in the elementary social studies curriculum. Dianne Monson is a past president of the U.S. Board on Books for

For young adult literature, a generation is not thirty years, but four or five. Books that last for several generations do
so because of inherent qualities, including well-drawn characters, important themes intelligently explored, and richness of
language. But they also survive because they are studied by researchers and used in college and school literature classes.
Ted Hipple, a founder and past president of ALAN (the Assembly on Literature for Adolescents of the National Council of Teachers
of English), currently serves that organization as its executive secretary. A professor of education at the University of

A survey of readers of nonfiction estimates the size of the market, compares the demographics of the survey group to those
of readers of “literature,” and describes the respondents' reading habits: how much they read, what other kinds of books they
read, what magazines they read, and where they read. It then examines how these readers select books and what influences their
choices. Their reasons for reading serious nonfiction are also explored. Finally, these readers are compared with two other
groups that have been studied in depth: readers of romance novels and female readers of self-help books.

In 2014, Sam Houston State University Library librarians distributed a survey to students, faculty and staff to better understand how the university community was using library materials for recreational reading. The survey found that patrons had preference for print materials with a growing interest in other formats. A significant number of respondents did not view the library as a source of recreational reading materials; those who did read across a broad swath of genres. During the spring of 2010, the University of Houston Libraries Digital Services Department began an initiative to promote existing and upcoming collections in the University of Houston Digital Library and drive traffic to the online repository. Spurred by an OCLC report (De Rosa et al. 2005) that only two percent of college and university students began research by consulting library resources, University of Houston Digital Services staff sought to add content from the University of Houston Digital Library to Wikipedia in order to insert primary source digital materials into the research workflow of students and faculty. As a result, referrals from Wikipedia to the University of Houston Digital Library have increased significantly and the pilot project is now the basis for an ongoing University of Houston Digital Services program. The structure and direction of the pilot project were a collaborative effort between University of Houston Digital Services staff and a University of North Texas Library and Information Science intern participating in the University of Houston Digital Services Digital Library Internship Program. Through this case study the authors cover the evolution of the University of Houston Digital Services Wikipedia pilot project and its growth into a permanent program. The authors also outline the workflows and procedures of the project and describes in detail the challenges and successes of the pilot Wikipedia project at University of Houston Digital Services. Included are lessons learned for libraries and cultural institutions interested in establishing a similar program. 相似文献
