The essence of text mining and data mining is that a machine and software are used for content analysis of large digital corpora. The Publishing Research Consortium commissioned a study on content mining of scholarly journal articles with 29 expert interviews and an international survey among publishers. The main results are: (i) content mining developments appear to be accelerating with more applications in more areas; (ii) third‐party demand for content mining is widespread but still at low levels of frequency; (iii) publishers' permissions for content mining are quite liberal, especially for research‐driven mining requests; (iv) half of the publisher respondents undertake mining of their own content; and (v) content mining is on the rise – publishers and third parties both report an increase in planned mining activities. As content mining of journal articles spreads and intensifies, cross‐publisher solutions can better help facilitate content mining. The study investigated the interest and willingness of publishers to support a set of different solutions, from one shared content mining platform to commonly agreed access terms for mining and standardization of mining‐friendly content formats.  相似文献

Library‐led publishing is one of the new approaches to journal publishing and open access that has grown tremendously in the last few years. A 2010 IMLS‐funded survey found that 55% of respondents – from US academic libraries of all different types and sizes – were already implementing or developing a publishing program. Library‐led publishing has garnered such momentum because, by offering low‐ or no‐cost publishing to university scholars, it addresses needs that traditional publishing has not been able to meet. This article presents a series of small case studies to illustrate different journals that have benefited from the library‐publishing model: (i) a journal that struggled to find an affordable publisher in its emerging field; (ii) a small society journal that could no longer afford to support itself in print; (iii) society publications that go beyond the traditional journal format; and (iv) a student journal with a revolving editorial board.  相似文献

This report describes an informal study carried out by Blackwell Publishing to assess whether the copy‐editing and proof‐correction process alone results in a significant difference between the author's version and the publisher's version of an article accepted for publication. One hundred and eighty‐nine articles were reviewed from 23 journals. The results indicate that a substantial number of changes are made. It is suggested that copy‐editing has an equal role to play in both the printed and online environments, and that in the latter it contributes substantially to the accuracy of the electronic version. Copy‐editing is therefore an important function within the publisher's overall responsibility towards the integrity of the article of record.  相似文献

In describing the Renaissance-style publisher of the 1990s, this article emphasizes the craft and skills needed to maintain quality. Ian Montagnes suggests that these skills must now be taught formally, rather than by apprenticeship. He also describes one such training program that he has conducted for editors in developing countries. Ian Montagnes is assistant director and editor-in-chief of the University of Toronto Press. He has served continuously as either associated editor or editor ofScholarly Publishing: A Journal for Authors and Editors since its inception in 1969. This paper takes the cue from the case of a retracted paper, cited both by the retraction notice and by an article published later in the same journal. This led to analysis and discussion on the skewness of citations in the journal Sustainability and within Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI) journals, particularly investigating self‐citations at journal and publisher levels. I analysed articles published by Sustainability in 2015 and found that self‐citations are higher than expected under a uniform probability distribution. Self‐citations in this journal make a 36% difference to the journal's impact factor. This research raises the question of what citation patterns can be expected as normal, and where the boundary between normal and anomaly lies. I suggest the issue deserves further investigation because self‐citations have several implications, ranging from impact factors to visibility and influence of scientific journals.  相似文献

A publisher's customer and user data typically comes in many forms and from many specialized repositories and systems. For sales and marketing staff in particular, there is considerable insight to be gained from analysing all of this data closely. However, achieving an integrated and complete ‘single customer view’ via a data warehouse solution can be a costly, time‐consuming and challenging undertaking. In this case study report, DataSalon's MasterVision is described as an alternative approach to solving this problem for publishers. Key to the solution is a dynamic data modelling philosophy, with both the underlying database and product interface configured for each publisher around the specific customer data supplied. A number of real‐life 'use cases' are explained and the value of Ringgold's Identify database of organizations, in addressing a number of integration challenges but also in adding to the intelligence that can be gleaned from source data, is discussed.  相似文献

For a secondary database publisher, the imperative to provide seamless links between the bibliographic citations and the corresponding full text is unequivocal. Online publishing should, in theory, make this linkage easier to facilitate, but the reality is far more complex than the theory! CABI Publishing has been endeavouring continually to improve the linkage to full text offered by its bibliographic databases, and has encountered some obstacles which may not be immediately apparent to primary publishers. This article explains some of those obstacles and provides some insight into how secondary publishers are attempting to respond to the demands of the marketplace and the potential of online publishing.  相似文献

The purchase ‘en bloc’ by library consortia of all journals published by one publisher – the so‐called ‘Big Deal’ – is bad for small publishers and for large libraries even if – in the short term – good for large publishers and for small libraries. The publishing and library communities need to find alternative purchasing models that provide better deals for those disadvantaged by the prevalence of the ‘Big Deal’ while retaining the benefit of scale in negotiation and supply.  相似文献

For societies and associations seeking a publishing partner, the healthy competition between publishers means that the deals on offer have never been better. The problem for the society is distinguishing a good short‐term deal (say, an attractive financial offer) from the partnership that will actually be in the better long‐term interests of the journal. This article, based on the author's experience as a publisher‐turned‐consultant advising societies, offers a framework for selecting a partner based on a careful analysis of what the society needs from its publisher in the long term. Underlying the performance of the best publisher partners are a good understanding of the needs of societies and their journals; a strong service orientation; and an ability to plan strategically for each journal on the basis of facts and data.  相似文献
