This study investigated student exposure to and preference for eight instruction procedures used to teach college courses. The options were programmed instruction, computer-assisted instruction, modular instruction, contingency management and contingency contracting, personalized system of instruction or Keller Plan, individually prescribed instruction, large lecture and lecture-discussion. Six hundred students from six different colleges and universities were surveyed on a number of items related to their exposure and preferences of the eight instructional options. Results of the study indicated exposure to various options were significantly different among schools. There were also large differences among the various major areas of concentration. Student preferences were found to be influenced by such factors as area of concentration, grade point average, strength of learning modalities, class standing, and course content. The data also indicated that perhaps student choice of instructional method may be as effective as a method of individualizing instruction as trying to develop one all inclusive strategy. 相似文献

Teaching philosophies are central to the approach of pedagogical strategies but there has been little examination of discipline-specific teaching philosophies. This study addresses a significant gap in the literature by discussing the teaching philosophies of 122 instructors of sexuality courses. Sexuality education is unique compared to most disciplines due to the personal nature of the content, thus being more difficult for students and instructors to distance themselves from the course content. The teaching philosophies in this study conveyed two overarching approaches to sexuality instruction: the instructor’s perspective of the course and the approach of the sexuality instruction. Although teaching philosophies typically inform one’s practice of teaching and course content, this study proposes that sexuality education is intrinsically different than other areas of instruction despite the interdisciplinary backgrounds of college instructors. 相似文献

Abstract The study investigated the interactive effects of professors' instruction strategies and students' conceptual levels on the motivation to learn of 83 postsecondary students randomly assigned to either direct or nondirect instruction groups. Statistically significant interactions revealed that highly structured teaching methods maximized the motivation of students with low conceptual levels, whereas teaching methods that were low in structure enhanced the motivation of high-conceptual-level students. The findings expand previous research and offer insights into how professors can influence students' motivation to learn academic course content. 相似文献

Through an IBM partnership, Acadia University has the benefit of an infrastructure that places a laptop computer in the hands of some 4000 faculty and students on campus. Coupled with anytime–anyplace campus access to the computer network, the setting offers unique opportunities to study the pedagogical impacts of the use of computers in classroom instruction.University business administration courses have routinely employed case study approaches in the delivery of some course content. The research described follows the use of an elaborate case study communications networking system being used in a business course on competitive intelligence. Though the technology collage allows for certain opportunities to promote quality instruction, not all aspects of technology use were found to be productive.
