ABSTRACT

Academic libraries in developing countries are underfunded and require transformational leadership to manage the resultant changes and ensure organizational effectiveness. This study attempts to identify the prevalent leadership styles in academic libraries in South West Nigeria using the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire. The study reflected that the library managers portrayed mostly a mix of transformational and transactional leadership styles. The library budget, equipment, and acquisition were most affected by recession. The library leaders preferred a mixture of investment and retrenchment (cost controlling) strategies to cope with recession. Leadership assessment using transformational model for coaching and recruitment is recommended for libraries.  相似文献

Increasingly, organizations are facing turbulent and competitive times. Hence, the need for universities to capitalize on the robustness and diversity of their employees to maximize their success by attracting and developing an engaged, healthy, and high-performing workforce through the provision of stimulating work environments that will promote work-family balance, work motivation, job satisfaction and overall job commitment. This study was designed to investigate the effects of work motivation, job satisfaction, and work-family balance on job commitment as well as work motivation and work-family balance as they affect job satisfaction of library personnel in universities in North-central Nigeria. The total enumeration technique was used to cover all the 926 library personnel in the universities in North-central Nigeria. The validated questionnaire was used to collect data on 926 library personnel out of which 842 responded. The response rate achieved was 91 %. The study found that work-family balance, work motivation and job satisfaction had significant effect on the job commitment of the respondents. Job satisfaction has the most significant effect (41 %) on job commitment. It is therefore, recommended that university administrators, library managers and most especially policy makers in the education sector should give adequate attention to work-family balance, work motivation, and job satisfaction when planning to improve job commitment of their employees. In addition, they should consider work motivation and work-family balance to improve job satisfaction of the library employees.  相似文献

This survey study explored employees' of academic libraries, specifically R1 and R2 Doctoral Universities in the United States, attitudes regarding their overall level of satisfaction with the implementation of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives at their places of work in regard to the promotion of DEI culture at their institutions, the ability to pursue DEI work in their day-to-day work, and the alignment of their personal values with their libraries, universities, and surrounding communities. The findings suggest that while most respondents felt there was acceptable buy-in from library and university employees, library and university leadership must provide meaningful support for DEI, or library employees will become dismayed and experience low morale. Findings also indicate that while the institutional culture within one's library and university may be supportive of DEI work, threats to the promotion and tenure process could be a deterrent. Finally, respondents also reported overall comfortability in incorporating DEI work into their day-to-day lives. While the results are not generalizable to institutions outside of the parameters of the current study, this study sheds some perspective on the LIS community's response to DEI issues.  相似文献

This study uses diffusion of innovation theory to determine the relationship between transformational leadership and employee innovation via the mediation of organisational learning and knowledge sharing, as well as to examine the moderating role of social media use. A total of 375 employees and supervisors were recruited via random sampling from 89 municipal committees (one of the tiers of local government organisations) in Pakistan. Results indicate that transformational leadership has a positive impact on organisational learning and knowledge sharing. Similarly, organisational learning and knowledge sharing have a significant impact on employee innovation. Likewise, transformational leadership indirectly influenced employee innovation via organisational learning and knowledge sharing. Surprisingly, the moderating influence of social media use on the relationship between organisational learning and employee innovation proved insignificant. However, social media use had a significant effect on the relationship between knowledge sharing and employee innovation. This study provides informative insights by demonstrating that public sector leaders undertaking the transformational role and encouraging followers to use organisational learning, knowledge sharing and social media can help facilitate employee innovation in the public sector.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Transformational leadership is highly correlated with effective organizations and successful change, yet few studies of this leadership style exist in the library literature. This study examined perceptions of transformational traits in academic library leaders. The study asked academic librarians at 4 year institutions to rate their library's leadership using the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire. While the librarians perceived their library leaders to be more transformational than transactional, the mean score for transformational leadership was middling, as were the scores for each of the transformational components. This could indicate a lack of change readiness in these libraries.  相似文献

高校图书馆馆长对图书馆的建设、馆员的发展有着举足轻重的作用。采用Bass的多元因素领导量表(MLQ),对不同地区、不同类型近200所高校的500名馆员进行问卷调查,以探讨影响高校图书馆馆长领导风格的因素。运用SPSS17.0对问卷数据进行独立样本T检验、方差分析等,得出结论:馆员感知的高校图书馆馆长领导风格其变革型领导行为高于交易型领导行为。馆员感知的在领导性别、年龄、学校类型、学校地域等方面图书馆馆长领导风格不存在显著差异;而在学历、任职年限上领导风格存在显著差异。  相似文献

Computerization of library services is intended to modernize the entire library system in Nigeria as in the industrialized countries, and to ensure accuracy, efficiency, effective information management, reliable user services, enhanced interlibrary co-operation and library prestige. By 1985, only the library of the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, had succeeded in automating its library services. Other libraries are mostly at the trial stage. University and research libraries and the National Library of Nigeria are leading the race to computerize their services. Lack of co-operation between libraries is an obstacle to library automation in Nigeria. Some librarians are not sure whether computerized library services would thrive owing to problems of poor funding, inadequate physical and environmental facilities such as low grade buildings, unreliable power supply and the scanty amount of information holdings in most of our libraries. Staff computer training, standby power generating plants, competent personnel, computer technicians and support for computer acquisition and hardware maintenance are major factors to consider before any Nigerian library decides to automate its services. In future, use of natural language by computers will make computers more user friendly. Installation of mini- or microcomputers, with powerful information storage capacity, rather than main frames are recommended for small Nigerian libraries with fewer than 20000 book titles, but which wish to automate their services.  相似文献

The study investigated the extent of adoption of electronic theses and dissertations in university libraries in Nigeria. Data collection for the study was via online questionnaire. The study revealed that digitization of theses and dissertations started between 1980 and 1995. It was found that only a few university libraries have embraced digitization of theses and dissertations in Nigeria. Benefits of electronic theses and dissertations were identified as improving university ranking and visibility, increasing access to the theses and dissertations, saving space in the library, enabling others link to the work with persistent URLs, preserving the work for future generations, and saving costs for students. Challenges such as unstable internet connectivity, lack of funding, irregular power supply, lack of information technology personnel, absence of electronic theses and dissertations submission policy, and copyright issues were identified. It is hoped that the study might provide insights useful for librarians planning to embark on the digitization of theses and dissertations project.  相似文献

This study considers academic library personnel perceptions of gender and leadership associated with three obstacles – family, “double binds”, social capital – identified by Alice Eagly and Linda Carli in 2007. A survey was created that provides prompts to measure perception of these obstacles as they apply to both genders. Ninety-two library personnel from a random sample completed the survey. Findings from a t-test that describe and interpret the results are presented, along with themes coded from survey comments. Suggestions Eagly and Carli offer to improve leadership equity are adapted specifically to academic libraries.  相似文献

This paper discusses the activities of Book Aid International (BAI) in Nigeria and commends it for its assistance with libraries. The development of libraries in a developing country like Nigeria is described as a Herculian task brought about by inadequate official support coupled with dwindling financial allocations. This paper also discusses the devastating effect of the economic depression of the early 1980s on libraries, as many could barely replenish their stock, either through local sources or through importation. BAI has been helping to end the book crisis in Nigeria through donations. Within the last four years, over half a million volumes have been shared among certain libraries. Various types of libraries have benefited from the project. Suggestions have been made that BAI should not limit its assistance to only books, but should also include journals and provide training for library personnel. Other agencies and organizations are being called upon to emulate BAI in assisting libraries in developing countries. The paper concludes by calling on the Nigerian government at various levels to be more committed to developing a comprehensive library system.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to examine the educational and informational needs of public library users in Nigeria. The data was obtained from the answers to an inquiry form handed to persons entering the library during a typical six days of operation in seven public libraries in Nigeria. It was discovered that a large number of users used the library as “study hall” (69.1 percent) and seek library materials for their school work (72.3 percent). It is recommended that public libraries should gear their collections to the needs of the people. Focused collection rather than balanced collection is recommended. Normal library functions should be expanded to include education, literacy, and health care.  相似文献

This paper reports on a study investigating the effectiveness of the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act (SENDA) in university libraries, focusing specifically on the extent to which the requirement to make ‘reasonable adjustments’ influences disability provision. The research aimed to evaluate the current provision for disabled students and to analyse the factors that influenced the current state. The results indicated that all libraries were aware of SENDA and had made significant implementations, including assigning a disability representative, making physical adjustments to the building and purchasing assistive technology. However, the quality of provision was inconsistent across the sector, resulting in disabled students enjoying equal opportunities within one library, but not within another. Reasons for this included a lack of institutional financial support requiring a library to fund adjustments itself, an inability to find the time to carry out the work involved, and the physical state of the building prohibiting certain adjustments being made. Recommendations to improve this situation include: improving guidance by advertising examples of best practice and forming support networks; instigating a programme of monitoring by authority personnel to ensure compliance and consistency; and assigning an assistive technology officer who is equipped to deal with this growing area.  相似文献

Academic libraries are facing the need to closely examine the effectiveness of current organizational functions in response to rapid changes in technology and the information environment. The purpose of this study is to explore the functions and issues of the academic library organization in South Korea based on the librarians' perceptions. We conducted a literature review about the changes in the role of academic libraries and organizational functions. In-depth interviews with 19 librarians and a content analysis of those interviews were conducted. As a result, we identified organizational characteristics pertaining to 1) internal functions of the library, such as communication, leadership, motivation, and team system, and 2) external functions, such as collaboration with external administrative departments, and utilization of personal networks. We also discovered mutual relationships among the functions. In particular, leader's support is important to continuously motivate librarians and increase the effectiveness of the team system, resulting in a positive effect on the reputation of the academic library. This study contributes to the academic library literature by comprehensively and empirically exploring functions affecting the services of academic libraries.  相似文献

TV reporters in Taiwan often encounter accidents during regular assignment runs, which may be a significant factor that increases their intentions to leave their job. Occupational hazard has always been ignored by news media organizations. Recent research has shown that a positive organizational safety climate may improve safety-related issues. To build on previous research conducted, this study investigates the moderating effect of safety climate between safety leadership and turnover intentions. This research collected 268 valid samples with an 89% response rate. Using the hierarchical linear model, results show that the transformational leadership style is negatively related to turnover intentions and the passive leadership style is positively related. Moreover, the moderation tests found a negative relationship between the interaction of passive leadership and safety and employees' turnover intentions. This implies that when reporters are working in a positive safety climate environment, their turnover intentions will be significantly lower. On the contrary, the positive moderating effect of safety climate on the relationship between transformational leadership and turnover intention is not significant.  相似文献
