A large-scale longitudinal study was conducted in which the elementary mathematical knowledge and skills of a large group of Flemish preservice elementary school teachers from 15 different institutes was assessed by means of a paper-and-pencil test that was administered both at the beginning and at the end of their 3-year training. The 30-items test covered the new standards for mathematics in the elementary school curriculum in Flanders. The test was divided in six subsets differing in terms of the curricular subdomain and of the cognitive operations being addressed by the item. The results confirmed the frequently heard concern that at the beginning of their training preservice elementary school teachers have rather weak mathematical competencies. At the end of their 3-year training, the overall test performance had become substantially better, although there were still reasons to be seriously concerned about the readiness of some student teachers to teach mathematics to elementary school children. A number of more specific comparisons helped to identify the relative role of two different factors—selection and instruction—in student teachers’ gain from pretest to posttest. Besides documenting the development of elementary mathematical competence in preservice elementary school teachers, the study also resulted in an instrument for (self-) assessment of elementary school mathematical competence. Teacher dispositions, attitudes, and motivation play important roles in educating students so that they are highly successful in school. This is particularly true for students in borderland areas who frequently need to negotiate two cultures, two languages, and two worlds. Using grounded theory with extant data from Tijuana and San Diego-area teachers who participated in a border pedagogy training institute, characteristics that are critical to teacher dispositions—which can make significant differences in effectiveness with students in the borderlands—have been identified. 相似文献

The education of French teachers is undergoing significant changes. analogous to the changes in the structure of the school system. These reforms will update and strengthen elementary education by raising the level of teacher training. For the first time, pedagogical training is also being introduced for the teachers of academic secondary schools, the lycées, which now serve—with a broadened curriculum—a larger group of students than the formerly restricted number of children able to pass exacting entrance tests. Cultural attitudes and expectations in multilingual educational settings are closely related to teachers’ implicit theories about children growing up “between two different cultures” and about their role as “knowledgeable practitioners.” These assumptions are in themselves neither discriminating nor explicitly judgmental. Nevertheless, they may obstruct truly intercultural learning and teaching experiences and should be made the subject of teacher training. Data collected during the in-service training of preschool and primary school teachers are the basis for the analysis of these assumptions and for exemplifying a strategy for enhancing cultural awareness. The use of narrative — i.e. the creation and interpretation of stories — is discussed as a method that encourages practitioners to take a new look at their preconceptions and images and to engage in a conscious process of “meaning making”. 相似文献

This paper discusses the problems associated with recruitment and training of school psychologists and school counsellors for employment in remote and isolated geographical areas. Detailed information is provided describing a model of training in the distance education mode which was developed by Charles Sturt University — Mitchell at Bathurst and the NSW Department of School Education in Australia. The model allows for the training of teachers (who already have three‐year majors in Psychology) for the role of School Counsellors, while they remain in employment in their place of residence. The preliminary evaluation indicates close to 100% completion rate for the students enrolled at Mitchell and enthusiastic support for the graduates from their employing supervisors. 相似文献

Effective behavior support is an important component of high-quality and nurturing early childhood classroom settings. At present, there are few studies that investigate the best way to train and support teachers in these strategies. The present study compared two different training approaches: (1) a workshop that included a one-day classroom-based training that introduced effective preventative and behavior support strategies followed by school year behavioral consultation support; or (2) an intensive condition that included the one-day workshop plus four days of experiential learning and practice in a preschool classroom followed by school year behavioral consultation support. Eighty-eight teachers/aides were randomly assigned to one of the two training conditions, and training occurred in August before the commencement of the school year. Results indicated that on observations of effective behavioral management and instructional learning formats, teachers in the intensive condition were improved proximally, with effects waning over time. For measures of teacher use of praise, the intensive group maintained the improved rate throughout the school year relative to the workshop group. Rates of commands and observations of classroom productivity were not different between groups. Teachers were satisfied with both approaches to training. 相似文献
