ABSTRACT

Researcher services have proliferated in recent years and numerous free or fee-based sites now promise increased visibility and impact for authors or contributors of publications and other research products. Not all services have the same goals, however, and it can be difficult to know with which services researchers should engage. In this article we establish three categories (author/researcher identification, academic/professional networking, and reference/citation management) and examine nineteen services that fit into those categories.

Column Editor's Note This JLA column posits that academic libraries and their services are dominated by information technologies, and that the success of librarians and professional staff is contingent on their ability to thrive in this technology-rich environment. The column will appear in odd-numbered issues of the journal, and will delve into all aspects of library-related information technologies and knowledge management used to connect users to information resources, including data preparation, discovery, delivery and preservation. Prospective authors are invited to submit articles for this column to the editor at kenning.arlitsch@montana.edu  相似文献

Summary

Technology makes it possible for library users to ask reference questions using e-mail or forms on the web and for librarians to conduct reference interviews using chat or videoconferencing software. This article explores each of these technologies and their current and potential use in reference services. A discussion of how technology has changed the way librarians find answers to reference questions is followed by a review of the tools needed for a well-equipped reference desk.  相似文献

The Taylor Family Digital Library is the central library opened in 2011 at the University of Calgary dedicated to supporting digital scholarship, creativity, analysis and a supportive learning environment for students. The new building is a technologically advanced converged cultural institution, with mandates to continually evolve in order to meet the needs of students and researchers. The infrastructure to support these mandates required research, collaboration and intense planning, resulting in new construction and technology standards for library renovation and construction projects. This pragmatic article is written for those who will follow in similar footsteps; it provides a roadmap for those embarking on the construction of a new technologically advanced library building.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Advances in building technologies are combining energy efficiency, networked sensors, and data recording in exciting ways. Modern facilities can adjust lighting, heating, and cooling outputs to maximize efficiency, provide better physical security, improve wayfinding for occupants, and provide detailed reports of building use. This column will briefly explore the idea of “smart buildings,” describe some of the technologies that are being developed for these buildings, and explore their implications for libraries. A brief listing of selected smart building technologies is also provided.  相似文献

Summary

The advent of new technologies raises a question of the value of one-on-one personalized interaction in the reference environment. The first part of this paper briefly surveys leading library literature; the second part reports results of an informal survey of practitioners in the field, designed to elicit their views on the influence of theoretical models and new technologies on reference service. It is suggested that while there is no necessary conflict between integration of technology and existing structures in the reference environment, new technology does raise issues that need to be thoughtfully addressed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

As computing becomes more portable, an ever-increasing number of people are dependent upon smartphones, personal digital assistants, webpads, and other wireless devices. This paper addresses the effect, if any, of these current and future wireless technologies on electronic journal publishing. Have these technologies impacted e-journal publishing to this point? What are the expectations and strategies of journal publishers in dealing with the changing technology? What special issues do these devices present regardimng licensing?  相似文献

ABSTRACT

There is limited literature on hospital archives projects. Hospitals understandably have a strong focus on patient care, but there is still a critical need to keep institutional archives. Among their many uses, institutional archives preserve corporate memory, provide evidence of interactions with community, and assist in contemporary decision making. This column describes a university-hospital partnership to undertake a one-year project to preserve, detail, and digitize ten boxes, or approximately 3.8 meters, of materials dating from 1980 to 2006. This project serves as a model for other hospital or health care facilities wanting to preserve and more actively engage with their archival collections.  相似文献

TECHNOLOGY
Abstract

Technology is often the primary means by which we communicate with and serve our users, and this column offers a forum for exploring innovative, creative, and effective uses of technology for providing public services, including circulation, course reserves, instruction, public workstations, reference, media services, and more. Guest columnists representing a diverse range of contexts and technological expertise will provide case studies, opinion pieces, and reviews on a range of technological solutions for public services. Topic ideas and queries about contributing to this column may be addressed to the Technology Column Editor, Colleen Bell, .  相似文献

Abstract

The Distance Learning Project (DISLEAP) was designed to give the OCLC Office of Research a fundamental understanding of the technologies underlying current distance learning capabilities. In particular, Internet and World Wide Web-based systems were studied. A primary goal of the study was to determine what the short- and long-term impacts of distance learning might be on libraries and what role OCLC might play in supporting libraries in their involvement with distance learning. In conjunction with this study, we undertook a parallel technology assessment to support the Regional OCLC Network Director's Advisory Committee (RONDAC) Distance Learning Task Force. The latter led to the demonstration of interactive, Internet-based conferencing capabilities to the OCLC Users Council in February 1998. We then purchased and deployed White Pine Software's MeetingPoint Conferencing Server and Microsoft's NetMeeting conferencing client. This report gives the details of the results of the assessments of distance learning technologies.  相似文献
