The article mainly focuses on Chinese and English idioms and their cultural differences. Idioms exist in both Chinese and English, and they have been used frequently for a long time. Furthermore, idioms are fixed phrases extracted from language over long time of usage. Although they are formed in short phrases, for example idioms known as "成语" in Chinese, which has only have four or eight letters, their meanings are exuberant and connotative. Therefore, the analysis of the idiom’s usage and the cultural differences it reflects is significant to every language learner and translator.  相似文献

This study investigates whether L2 learners of English rely on their L1 (in this case Chinese) when attempting to comprehend an idiom in English and whether the student’s level of proficiency has any effect on L1 use in understanding L2 idioms. Using think-aloud protocol, the following conclusions were reached: 1) Almost all subjects translated English idioms into Chinese and searched a match, i.e. there exist transfer and interference of L1 in understanding L2 idioms.2) When the L1 was unable to help for understanding different idioms, good students were able to use conceptual strategies (i.e. metaphors and schema) better than poor students. This paper concludes with a suggestion that metaphor instruction be used to teach L2 idioms since a student cannot get very far when relying solely on his L1.  相似文献

Idioms are crystallization of the development of language, having been used by language users, which are succinct-formed fixed phrases or simple sentences full of profundities.English language is one of the most rich and colorful vocabulary in the world,in which idioms appear more numerous and complicated, permeating the dense western cultural traits.Linguists have already achieved great accomplishment in the research on English idioms, but most of these focus on their cultural origins, the difference between Chinese idioms and English idioms.Hence there is enough room to explore the aesthetic value of English idioms. This paper explains the importance of appreciating aesthetic value of English idioms in studying English as well. Moreover, this thesis puts forward a piece of advice to English learners:in their studying English, what they should do is not only to master the characteristics of idioms working as a communicating tool,to study English idioms well but also to pay close attention to aesthetic functions,to discover, explore and then appreciate their aesthetic value.  相似文献

In the field of translation studies, scholars’ understanding of translation in its traditional sense; has shifted along with the popularity and prosperous development of cultural studies in the recent years. Translation is no longer regarded as merely a cross-linguistic activity but essentially cross-cultural communication. Cultural factors begin to gain more and more attention to translators. Nida even claims that"for truly successful translating, biculturalism is even more important than bilingualism". Therefore, this thesis will focus on analyzing the influence of cultural differences between Chinese and English on the English translation. This thesis firstly discusses embodiments of cultural differences between Chinese and English; after that, it focuses on influences of cultural differences on translation; last but not least, this thesis also suggests some translating techniques.  相似文献

And idioms play a crucial role in the studying of language with its characteristics of briefness and vividness. With focus now placed on the learner, more attention is given to his learning style, multiple intelligence and developing learning strategies to enable him to make sense of and use of the target language appropriately in varied contexts and with different uses of the language. To attain this, the teacher is tasked with designing, monitoring and processing language learning activities for students to carry out and in the process learn by doing and reflecting on the learning process they went through as they interacted socially with each other. This paper describes a task named“The Fishbowl Technique”and found to be effective in large ESL classes in the secondary level in the Philippines.  相似文献

It is not surprising that non-native speakers of English frequently make morphological errors when they are speaking or writing in English. But it is interesting to find out that some native English speakers sometimes use words in an ungrammatical or inappropriate way. This article analyses the usage of the word"uncorrect"and tries to show the background of this term by searching online and consulting to the dictionaries and also to analyze the word formation and usage of this term.  相似文献

Honglou Meng is an encyclopedia of Chinese language in which includes many different Chinese linguistic features, e.g. idioms, common sayings, poems etc. There are 109 Chinese common sayings in the first 80 chapters of the novel. Most Chinese common sayings contain figurative meanings and the images involved are usually vivid and culture-specific; therefore it is very difficult to translate them. It is found that David Hawkes is more creative and use more free translation while the Yangs use more literal translation. This supports Feng Qinghua’s suggestion that the Yangs prefer to use literal translation while David Hawkes is inclined to use free translation.  相似文献

Language researchers have long been working on the language transfer theory since 1970s with an aim to help second language acquisition. Researches on transfer of pronunciation were explored from many aspects, such as phonetics, age, motivation and culture etc. By illustrating the Chinese learners’ improper English pronunciation, it tries to discuss the negative transfer of their mother tongue on the English pronunciation on the theoretical basis of phonetic and phonological differences between the two languages. Based on these studies and analysis, it hopes to arouse the learners’ awareness of the different pronunciation between English and Chinese and their interests in acquiring a native-like pronunciation, and hopefully the teachers will also help the learners have a good knowledge of the difference before they’re affected by the negative transfer of Chinese.  相似文献

Languages convey cultural information while they are used as tools to communicate. With the development of human society and the frequencies of intercultural communication, cultural differences may impact on people’s normal communications.Cultural differences between English and Chinese appear in many aspects of languages.Animal words are influenced by such cultural factors as geographical conditions, historical developments, traditional customs, mythology and fables, etc. So they are endowed with abundant cultural connotations.A similar animal word may have different connotative meanings in English and Chinese respectively, but sometimes different animal words have the same connotations.Whether they are different or not will reflect cultural differences between Chinese and English. Thus, through illustration, classification and comparison of English and Chinese animal words, the thesis aims to explore the cultural differences between English and Chinese. What’s more, the thesis aims to help English learns have a better understanding of English culture and develop the abilities of English language study.  相似文献

This paper focuses on essential distinctions between the major native dialects of English which are often divided by linguists into the three general categories of the British Isles dialects, those of North America and those of Australasia.English learners might want to learn a standard accent, because maybe they need it in a play or maybe they want to impress their friends,or maybe they want to fit in better in a certain English speaking environment. The paper hopes to help Chinese English learners firstly isolate the distinctions among different but widely-used and officially-accepted accents and then speak good English by means of eliminating incorrect accent by imitating Standard English pronunciation.  相似文献

Figurative speeches, especially metaphors that prevail essays, novels, reports, poems, etc. give flavor, if not life, to writings, help express the inexpressible, bring the abstract concrete, make the tedious succinct, and illuminate the vague and the ambiguous bright and clear. It seems that metaphors to writing is what salt to cooking ─ and more. In this paper, we are attempting to drag it to a "down-to-earth" tool to be handy to common learners by quoting examples from various styles to show how it can be used to increase language power and how important it is for ordinary Chinese learners of English to get familiar with and learn to employ metaphors and other figurative speeches in writing. We should be able to use words in non-literal sense to lend force to an idea, to heighten effects, or to create atmosphere, so as to make our writings eligible at least for practical use and readable for an ordinary native speaker of English.  相似文献

Code-switching between English and Chinese usually occurs in students’ talk when they are involved in taking communicative language activities in college English class. This paper studies the situations in which students are likely to use codeswitching and analyzes it from the perspective of the mental world in Verscheren’s Adaptation Theory. It shows that inadequate mastery of English language, cultural differences and the improper adjustment to context may lead to students’ using of codeswitching. It also shows that the use of code-switching in students’ talk adapts to students’ cognitive elements and emotive elements as well.  相似文献
