While most literature about security has focused on the role of surveillance and social control in maintaining order in society and in institutions such as schools, this article examines security in relation to consumerism. The article points out that security is big business—not so much a mechanism of social control, but rather an allure made up of enticement and the gratification that comes with consumer activities. Alhough based on research on corporate school security, the article is theoretical. It draws from studies in education, geography, and communication to demonstrate how security has developed into a consumer activity involving suburbanization, technology, self-segregation, and the partitioning of neighborhoods and schools in homogeneous and often-private microsocieties. Adding to studies of schooling that have examined discipline, school structure, the curriculum, and pedagogy in terms of social control, the article examines schooling in relation to the uses of security that lead not so much to surveillance and other controlling mechanisms, but to a freeing of wills and choices that lead to residential isolation and school segregation.  相似文献

针对多校区办学格局下校园安全管理的特殊性和复杂性,开展了以“两地三校区”办学的台州学院校园安全现状的调查。调查结果反映出:安全状况评价基本满意,但安全形势仍不容乐观;安全教育不够全面系统,教育活动方式相对单一;安全防范意识比较淡薄,自我保护能力有待提高。建议采取的措施有:建立“三种机制”,落实校园及周边治安综合治理;坚持“三个到位”,切实加强校园安全管理工作;发挥“三自教育”,提高学生安全防范意识和技能。  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to determine primary school administrators’ and teachers’ opinions about the quality of their schools; the school administrators and teachers’ knowledge about Total Quality Management and quality tools and the quality tools used in primary schools. The research has been carried out with a qualitative approach and it is in the case study pattern. The participants consisted of 16 teachers and 4 school administrators working in primary schools in North Cyprus. The participants were chosen via maximum sampling method. The findings show that the current situation in schools contradicts with the basic principles of Total Quality Management. It was determined that school administrators were ignorant about Total Quality Management and none of the teachers and school administrators had previously heard the concept of quality tools. Teachers and school administrators mentioned disabled students as an issue. It seems like teachers have problems in behaving in the right way towards these students. They do not know how to improve these students’ talents because they are not educated on the subject. Via tools of quality teachers and school administrators may find reasons and solutions for issues like people with disabilities and plan events to promote disability awareness.  相似文献

This article is based on research conducted on the topic: Safety and security in schools: The case of KwaZulu-Natal. For the research project a purposive sample consisting of secondary school learners, teachers, school governing body chairpersons and principals were selected from the rural and township schools used in this study to explore the views of respondents about the state of safety and security in their school environments. The research was grounded in the social interpretive tradition, using an ethnographic research design, with one-on-one and focus group interviews. Data were analysed using critical discourse analysis to construct the main theme: namely, safety within schools. The findings indicated that learners and teachers are not safe in their schools. Lack of safety and security is characterised by the vulnerability of schools with regard to issues such as fighting, violent murders, sexual harassment, stabbings, the use of derogatory language and threats. It is argued that there is an urgent need to address the concerns of the participants.  相似文献

This statewide study surveyed 215 principals of middle schools and high schools in Texas, USA. It examined the effectiveness of activities on school crime by three main methods: (1) what activities the school was doing to combat crime (e.g. police/guards, school uniforms, metal detectors, drug education programmes, character education programmes, closed campus, surveillance, student court activity, rewards for attendance, etc.); (2) cooperation with outside sources (i.e. police, parents, school district, judicial branch); and (3) principals' comments on what helps and hurts school efforts to alleviate school crimes. Data from these principals regarding drug crime and interpersonal crime in schools were correlated with the data on school activities and outside cooperation. The study also used nine critical elements of promising violence prevention programmes introduced by Dusenbury et al., as a framework to evaluate Texas school measures to combat school crimes. The study's findings and policy implications were discussed.  相似文献
