The thermoregulatory responses of upper-body trained athletes were examined at rest, during prolonged arm crank exercise and recovery in cool (21.5 ± 0.9°C, 43.9 ± 10.1% relative humidity; mean ± s) and warm (31.5 &± 0.6°C, 48.9 - 8.4% relative humidity) conditions. Aural temperature increased from rest by 0.7 ± 0.7°C (P ? 0.05) during exercise in cool conditions and by 1.6 ± 0.7°C during exercise in warm conditions (P ? 0.05). During exercise in cool conditions, calf skin temperature decreased (1.5 ± 1.3°C), whereas an increase was observed during exercise in warm conditions (3.0 ± 1.7°C). Lower-body skin temperatures tended to increase by greater amounts than upper-body skin temperatures during exercise in warm conditions. No differences were observed in blood lactate, heart rate or respiratory exchange ratio responses between conditions. Perceived exertion at 45 min of exercise was greater than that reported at 5 min of exercise during the cool trial (P ? 0.05), whereas during exercise in the warm trial the rating of perceived exertion increased from initial values by 30 min (P ? 0.05). Heat storage, body mass losses and fluid consumption were greater during exercise in warm conditions (7.06 ± 2.25 J·g-1 ·°C-1, 1.3 ± 0.5 kg and 1038 ± 356 ml, respectively) than in cool conditions (1.35 ± 0.23 J·g-1·°C-1, 0.8 ± 0.2 kg and 530 ± 284 ml, respectively; P ? 0.05). The results of this study indicate that the increasing thermal strain with constant thermal stress in warm conditions is due to heat storage within the lower body. These results may aid in understanding thermoregulatory control mechanisms of populations with a thermoregulatory dysfunction, such as those with spinal cord injuries.  相似文献

This study examined the influence of water ingestion on endurance capacity during submaximal treadmill running. Four men and four women with a mean (± S.E.) age of 21.4 ± 0.7 years, height of 169 + 2 cm, body mass of 63.1 ± 2.9 kg and VO 2 max of 51.1 ± 1.8 ml kg?1 min?1, performed two randomly assigned treadmill runs at 70% VO 2 max to exhaustion. No fluid was ingested during one trial (NF‐trial), whereas a single water bolus of 3.0 ml kg?1 body mass was ingested immediately pre‐exercise and serial feedings of 2.0 ml kg?1 body mass were ingested every 15 min during exercise in a fluid replacement trial (FR‐trial). Run time for the NF‐trial was 77.7 ± 7.7 min, compared to 103 ± 12.4 min for the FR‐trial (P<0.01). Body mass (corrected for water ingestion) decreased by 2.0 ± 0.2% in the NF‐trial and 2.7 ± 0.2% in the FR‐trial (P<0.01), while plasma volume decreased by 1.1 ± 1.1% and 3.5 ± 1.1% in the two trials respectively (N.S.). However, these apparent differences in circulatory volume were not associated with differences in rectal temperature. Respiratory exchange ratios indicated increased carbohydrate metabolism (73% vs 64% of total energy expenditure) and suppressed fat metabolism after 75 min of exercise in the NF‐trial compared with the FR‐trial (NF‐trial, 0.90 ± 0.01; FR‐trial, 0.86 ± 0.03; P<0.01). Blood glucose concentrations were similar in both trials, while blood lactate concentrations were higher in the NF‐trial at the end of exercise (4.83 ± 0.34 vs 4.18 ± 0.38 mM; P<0.05). In summary, water ingestion during prolonged running improved endurance capacity.  相似文献

In this study, we examined the effects of upper-body pre-cooling before intermittent sprinting exercise in a moderate environment. Seven male and three female trained cyclists (age 26.8±5.5 years, body mass 68.5±9.5?kg, height 1.76±0.13?m, [Vdot]O2peak 59.0±11.4?mL?·?kg?1?·?min?1; mean±s) performed 30?min of cycling at 50% [Vdot]O2peak interspersed with a 10-s Wingate cycling sprint test at 5?min intervals. The exercise was performed in a room controlled at 22oC and 40% relative humidity. In the control session, the participants rested for 30?min before exercise. In the pre-cooling session, the participants wore the upper segment of a liquid conditioning garment circulating 5oC coolant until rectal temperature decreased by 0.5oC. Rectal temperature at the start of exercise was significantly lower in the pre-cooling (36.5±0.3oC) than in the control condition (37.0±0.5oC), but this difference was reduced to a non-significant 0.4oC throughout exercise. Mean skin temperature was significantly lower in the pre-cooling (30.7±2.3oC) than in the control condition (32.5±1.6oC) throughout exercise. Heart rate during submaximal exercise was similar between the two conditions, although peak heart rate after the Wingate sprints was significantly lower in the pre-cooling condition. With pre-cooling, mean peak power (909±161?W) and mean overall power output (797±154?W) were similar to those in the control condition (peak 921±163?W, mean 806±156?W), with no differences in the subjective ratings of perceived exertion. These results suggest that upper-body pre-cooling does not provide any benefit to intermittent sprinting exercise in a moderate environment.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of different work?–?rest durations during 40?min intermittent treadmill exercise and subsequent running performance. Eight males (mean?±?s: age 24.3?±?2.0 years, body mass 79.4?±?7.0?kg, height 1.77?±?0.05?m) undertook intermittent exercise involving repeated sprints at 120% of the speed at which maximal oxygen uptake (v-[Vdot]O2max) was attained with passive recovery between each one. The work?–?rest ratio was constant at 1:1.5 with trials involving short (6:9?s), medium (12:18?s) or long (24:36?s) work?–?rest durations. Each trial was followed by a performance run to volitional exhaustion at 150% v-[Vdot]O2max. After 40?min, mean exercise intensity was greater during the long (68.4?±?9.3%) than the short work?–?rest trial (54.9?±?8.1% [Vdot]O2max; P?<?0.05). Blood lactate concentration at 10?min was higher in the long and medium than in the short work?–?rest trial (6.1?±?0.8, 5.2?±?0.9, 4.5?±?1.3?mmol?·?l?1, respectively; P?<?0.05). The respiratory exchange ratio was consistently higher during the long than during the medium and short work?–?rest trials (P <?0.05). Plasma glucose concentration was higher in the long and medium than in the short work?–?rest trial after 40?min of exercise (5.6?±?0.1, 6.6?±?0.2 and 5.3?±?0.5?mmol?·?l?1, respectively; P?<?0.05). No differences were observed between trials for performance time (72.7?±?14.9, 63.2?±?13.2, 57.6?±?13.5?s for the short, medium and long work?–?rest trial, respectively; P = 0.17), although a relationship between performance time and 40?min plasma glucose was observed (P?<?0.05). The results show that 40?min of intermittent exercise involving long and medium work?–?rest durations elicits greater physiological strain and carbohydrate utilization than the same amount of intermittent exercise undertaken with a short work?–?rest duration.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of caffeine ingestion on a ‘preloaded’ protocol that involved cycling for 2?min at a constant rate of 100% maximal power output immediately followed by a 1-min ‘all-out’ effort. Eleven male cyclists completed a ramp test to measure maximal power output. On two other occasions, the participants ingested caffeine (5?mg?·?kg?1) or placebo in a randomized, double-blind procedure. All tests were conducted on the participants' own bicycles using a Kingcycle? test rig. Ratings of perceived exertion (RPE; 6–20 Borg scale) were lower in the caffeine trial by approximately 1 RPE point at 30, 60 and 120?s during the constant rate phase of the preloaded test (P?<0.05). The mean power output during the all-out effort was increased following caffeine ingestion compared with placebo (794±164 vs 750±163?W; P?=?0.05). Blood lactate concentration 4, 5 and 6?min after exercise was also significantly higher by approximately 1?mmol?·?l?1 in the caffeine trial (P?<0.05). These results suggest that high-intensity cycling performance can be increased following moderate caffeine ingestion and that this improvement may be related to a reduction in RPE and an elevation in blood lactate concentration.  相似文献

Purpose: Correlations between fatigue-induced changes in exercise performance and maximal rate of heart rate (HR) increase (rHRI) may be affected by exercise intensity during assessment. This study evaluated the sensitivity of rHRI for tracking performance when assessed at varying exercise intensities. Method: Performance (time to complete a 5-km treadmill time-trial [5TTT]) and rHRI were assessed in 15 male runners following 1 week of light training, 2 weeks of heavy training (HT), and a 10-day taper (T). Maximal rate of HR increase (measured in bpm·s?1) was the first derivative maximum of a sigmoidal curve fit to HR data recorded during 5 min of running at 8 km·h?1 (rHRI8km·h?1), and during subsequent transition to 13 km·h?1 (rHRI8–13km·h?1) for a further 5 min. Results: Time to complete a 5-km treadmill time-trial was likely slower following HT (effect size ± 90% confidence interval = 0.16 ± 0.06), and almost certainly faster following T (–0.34 ± 0.08). Maximal rate of HR increase during 5 min of running at 8 km·h?1 and rHRI8–13km·h?1 were unchanged following HT and likely increased following T (0.77 ± 0.45 and 0.66 ± 0.62, respectively). A moderate within-individual correlation was found between 5TTT and rHRI8km·h?1 (r value ± 90% confidence interval = –.35 ± .32). However, in a subgroup of athletes (= 7) who were almost certainly slower to complete the 5TTT (4.22 ± 0.88), larger correlations were found between the 5TTT and rHRI8km·h?1 (r = –.84 ± .22) and rHRI8–13km·h?1 (r = –.52 ± .41). Steady-state HR during rHRI assessment in this group was very likely greater than in the faster subgroup (≥ 1.34 ± 0.86). Conclusion(s): The 5TTT performance was tracked by both rHRI8km·h?1 and rHRI8–13km·h?1. Correlations between rHRI and performance were stronger in a subgroup of athletes who exhibited a slower 5TTT. Individualized workloads during rHRI assessment may be required to account for varying levels of physical conditioning.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of ingesting 75?g of glucose 45?min before the start of a graded exercise test to exhaustion on the determination of the intensity that elicits maximal fat oxidation (Fatmax). Eleven moderately trained individuals ( V?O2max: 58.9±1.0?ml?·?kg?1?·?min?1; mean±s ), who had fasted overnight, performed two graded exercise tests to exhaustion, one 45?min after ingesting a placebo drink and one 45?min after ingesting 75?g of carbohydrate in the form of glucose. The tests started at 95?W and the workload was increased by 35?W every 3?min. Gas exchange measures and heart rate were recorded throughout exercise. Fat oxidation rates were calculated using stoichiometric equations. Blood samples were collected at rest and at the end of each stage of the test. Maximal fat oxidation rates decreased from 0.46±0.06 to 0.33±0.06?g?·?min?1 when carbohydrate was ingested before the start of exercise (P?<0.01). There was also a decrease in the intensity which elicited maximal fat oxidation (60.1±1.9% vs 52.0±3.4% V?O2max) after carbohydrate ingestion (P?<0.05). Maximal power output was higher in the carbohydrate than in the placebo trial (346±12 vs 332±12?W) (P?<0.05). In conclusion, the ingestion of 75?g of carbohydrate 45?min before the onset of exercise decreased Fatmax by 14%, while the maximal rate of fat oxidation decreased by 28%.  相似文献

Abstract

This study was designed to investigate the effect of ingesting a glucose plus fructose solution on the metabolic responses to soccer-specific exercise in the heat and the impact on subsequent exercise capacity. Eleven male soccer players performed a 90 min soccer-specific protocol on three occasions. Either 3 ml · kg?1 body mass of a solution containing glucose (1 g · min?1 glucose) (GLU), or glucose (0.66 g · min?1) plus fructose (0.33 g · min?1) (MIX) or placebo (PLA) was consumed every 15 minutes. Respiratory measures were undertaken at 15-min intervals, blood samples were drawn at rest, half-time and on completion of the protocol, and muscle glycogen concentration was assessed pre- and post-exercise. Following the soccer-specific protocol the Cunningham and Faulkner test was performed. No significant differences in post-exercise muscle glycogen concentration (PLA, 62.99 ± 8.39 mmol · kg wet weight?1; GLU 68.62 ± 2.70; mmol · kg wet weight?1 and MIX 76.63 ± 6.92 mmol · kg wet weight?1) or exercise capacity (PLA, 73.62 ± 8.61 s; GLU, 77.11 ± 7.17 s; MIX, 83.04 ± 9.65 s) were observed between treatments (P > 0.05). However, total carbohydrate oxidation was significantly increased during MIX compared with PLA (P < 0.05). These results suggest that when ingested in moderate amounts, the type of carbohydrate does not influence metabolism during soccer-specific intermittent exercise or affect performance capacity after exercise in the heat.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to compare different methods of detecting ventilatory indices (VI) and to investigate the impact of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) level on VI detection. Fifty females and fifty males completed a graded exercise test until volitional exhaustion with continuous gas-exchange measurement. The first and second ventilatory indices (VI-1, VI-2) were detected through different single automatic methods and through a semiautomatic method which combines visual and automatic detection methods. Additionally, the VIs were detected visually by two experts which served as the study specific gold standard. When comparing the semiautomatic method at VI-1 (intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) 0.88 [0.81, 0.92], Bland-Altman bias ± limits of agreement (LoA) 55 ± 334 ml O2 · min?1) and VI-2 (ICC 0.97 [0.96, 0.98], LoA 1 ± 268 ml O2 · min?1) to the visually detected VI, high levels of agreements and no significant differences were found. This was not the case for any of the other automatic methods. Additionally, we couldn’t find any relevant differences regarding the CRF level.

We therefore concluded that the semiautomatic detection method should be used for VI detection, as results are more accurate than in any of the single-automatic methods.

Physical inactivity is a major contributor to low-grade systemic inflammation. Most of the studies characterizing interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) release from exercising legs have been done in young, healthy men, but studies on inactivity in older people are lacking. The impact of 14 days of one-leg immobilization (IM) on IL-6 and TNF-α release during exercise in comparison to the contralateral control (CON) leg was investigated. Fifteen healthy men (age 68.1?±?1.1?year (mean?±?SEM); BMI 27.0?±?0.4 kg·m2; VO2max 33.3?±?1.6 ml·kg?1·min?1) performed 45?min of two-leg dynamic knee extensor exercise at 19.5?±?0.9 W. Arterial and femoral venous blood samples from the CON and the IM legs were collected every 15?min during exercise, and thigh blood flow was measured with ultrasound Doppler. Arterial plasma IL-6 concentration increased with exercise (rest vs. 45?min, main effect p?p?p?=?.085, effect size 0.28) higher in the IM leg compared to the CON leg (288 (95% CI: 213–373) vs. 220 (95% CI: 152–299) pg·min?1, respectively). There was no release of TNF-α in either leg and arterial concentrations remained unchanged during exercise (p?>?.05). In conclusion, exercise induces more pronounced IL-6 secretion in healthy older men. Two weeks of unilateral immobilization on the other hand had only a minor influence on IL-6 release. Neither immobilization nor exercise had an effect on TNF-α release across the working legs in older men.  相似文献

Carbohydrate (CHO) availability during endurance exercise seems to attenuate exercise-induced perturbations of cellular homeostasis and might consequently diminish the stimulus for training adaptation. Therefore, a negative effect of CHO intake on endurance training efficacy seems plausible. This study aimed to test the influence of carbohydrate intake on the efficacy of an endurance training program on previously untrained healthy adults. A randomized cross-over trial (8-week wash-out period) was conducted in 23 men and women with two 8-week training periods (with vs. without intake of 50g glucose before each training bout). Training intervention consisted of 4x45 min running/walking sessions/week at 70% of heart rate reserve. Exhaustive, ramp-shaped exercise tests with gas exchange measurements were conducted before and after each training period. Outcome measures were maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) and ventilatory anaerobic threshold (VT). VO2max and VT increased after training regardless of CHO intake (VO2max: Non-CHO 2.6 ± 3.0 ml*min?1*kg?1 p = 0.004; CHO 1.4 ± 2.5 ml*min?1*kg?1 p = 0.049; VT: Non-CHO 4.2 ± 4.2 ml*min?1*kg?1 p < 0.001; CHO 3.0 ± 4.2 ml*min?1*kg?1 p = 0.003). The 95% confidence interval (CI) for the difference between conditions was between +0.1 and +2.1 ml*min?1*kg?1 for VO2max and between ?1.2 and +3.1 for VT. It is concluded that carbohydrate intake could potentially impair the efficacy of an endurance training program.  相似文献

Recently, there has been growing interest in high-intensity interval training (HIT) as a strategy to improve health. In this pilot study, we examined the feasibility of a 4-week low-volume HIT and its effects on cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), blood pressure (BP) and enjoyment in overweight and obese youth. Twelve adolescents (body mass index (BMI): 34.8 ± 3.9 kg · m?2, 14.9 ± 1.5 years) participated in 12 sessions of HIT (10 × 60 s cycling bouts eliciting ~90% maximal heart rate, interspersed with 90 s recovery, 30 min/session, 3 sessions/week) over ~4 weeks. All the participants completed the study and exercise attendance averaged 92%. Despite no changes in body weight and total fat, HIT resulted in significant (P < 0.01) increases in CRF (pre: 20.1 versus post: 22.2 ml · kg?1 · min?1) and exercise time (pre: 425 versus post: 509 s) during peak oxygen uptake test, and a reduction in resting systolic BP (pre: 115.8 versus post: 107.6 mmHg). The majority of study participants (83%) enjoyed HIT and more than half of the participants (58%) reported that HIT is a more enjoyable form of exercise compared to other types of exercises. Low-volume HIT is a useful strategy to promote exercise participation and improve cardiovascular health in overweight and obese youth.  相似文献

This study examined the effect of hypoxia on growth hormone (GH) release during an acute bout of high-intensity, low-volume resistance exercise. Using a single-blinded, randomised crossover design, 16 resistance-trained males completed two resistance exercise sessions in normobaric hypoxia (HYP; inspiratory oxygen fraction, (FiO2) 0.12, arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2) 82?±?2%) and normoxia (NOR; FiO2 0.21, SpO2 98?±?0%). Each session consisted of five sets of three repetitions of 45° leg press and bench press at 85% of one repetition maximum. Heart rate, SpO2, and electromyographic activity (EMG) of the vastus lateralis muscle were measured throughout the protocol. Serum lactate and GH levels were determined pre-exposure, and at 5, 15, 30 and 60?min post-exercise. Differences in mean and integrated EMG between HYP and NOR treatments were unclear. However, there was an important increase in the peak levels and area under the curve of both lactate (HYP 5.8?±?1.8 v NOR 3.9?±?1.1?mmol.L?1 and HYP 138.7?±?33.1 v NOR 105.8?±?20.8?min.mmol.L?1) and GH (HYP 4.4?±?3.1 v NOR 2.1?±?2.5?ng.mL?1 and HYP 117.7?±?86.9 v NOR 72.9?±?85.3?min.ng.mL?1) in response to HYP. These results suggest that performing high-intensity resistance exercise in a hypoxic environment may provide a beneficial endocrine response without compromising the neuromuscular activation required for maximal strength development.  相似文献

The minimum exercise intensity that elicits ?O2max (i?O2max) is an important variable associated with endurance exercise performance. i?O2max is usually determined during a maximal incremental exercise test; however, the magnitude and duration of the increments used influence the i?O2max value produced by a given test. The aims of this study were twofold. The first was to investigate whether the i?O2max value produced by a single cycle ergometer test (i?O2max(S)) was repeatable. The second was to determine if i?O2max(S) represents the minimum intensity at which ?O2max is elicited when compared to a refined i?O2max value (i?O2max(R)) derived from repeated tests. Seventeen male cyclists (age 33.9?±?7.7 years, body mass 80.9?±?10.2?kg, height 1.82?±?0.05?m; VO2max 4.27?±?0.62 L?min?1) performed four maximal incremental tests for the determination of i?O2max(S) and i?O2max(R) (3 min stages; 20?W increments). Trials 1 and 2 were identical and used for assessing the repeatability of i?O2max(S), trials 3 and 4 began at different intensities and were used to determine i?O2max(R). i?O2max(S) showed good test–retest repeatability for i?O2max (CV?=?4.1%; ICC?=?0.93), VO2max (CV?=?6.3%; ICC?=?0.88) and test duration (CV?=?6.7%; ICC?=?0.89). There was no significant difference between i?O2max(S) and i?O2max(R) (303?±?40?W vs. 301?±?42?W) (P?2max determined directly during a maximal incremental test is repeatable and provides a very good estimate of the minimum exercise intensity that elicits ?O2max.  相似文献

Fatigue represents a reduction in the capability of muscle to generate force. The aim of the present study was to establish the effects of exercise that simulates the work rate of competitive soccer players on the strength of the knee extensors and knee flexors. Thirteen amateur soccer players (age 23.3±3.9 years, height 1.78±0.05?m, body mass 74.8±3.6?kg; mean±s) were tested during the 2000–2001 soccer season. Muscle strength of the quadriceps and hamstrings was measured on an isokinetic dynamometer. A 90?min soccer-specific intermittent exercise protocol, incorporating a 15?min half-time intermission, was developed to provide fatiguing exercise corresponding in work rate to a game of soccer. The exercise protocol, performed on a programmable motorized treadmill, consisted of the different intensities observed during soccer match-play (e.g. walking, jogging, running, sprinting). Muscle strength was assessed before exercise, at half-time and immediately after exercise. A repeated-measures analysis of variance showed significant reductions (P?<0.001) in peak torque for both the quadriceps and hamstrings at all angular velocities (concentric: 1.05, 2.09, 5.23 rad?·?s?1; eccentric: 2.09 rad?·?s?1). The peak torque of the knee extensors (KE) and knee flexors (KF) was greater before exercise [KE: 232±37, 182±34, 129±27, 219±41?N?·?m at 1.05, 2.09 and 5.23 rad?·?s?1 (concentric) and 2.09 rad?·?s?1 (eccentric), respectively; KF: 126±20, 112±19, 101±16, 137±23?N?·?m] than at half-time (KE: 209±45, 177±35, 125±36, 214±43?N?·?m; KF: 114±31, 102±20, 92±15, 125±25?N?·?m) and greater at half-time than after exercise (KE: 196±43, 167±35, 118±24, 204±43?N?·?m; KF: 104±25, 95±21, 87±13, 114±27?N?·?m). For the hamstrings?:?quadriceps ratio, significant changes were found (P?<0.05) for both legs, the ratio being greater before than after exercise. For fast?:?slow speed and left?:?right ratios, no significant changes were found. We conclude that there is a progressive reduction in muscle strength that applies across a range of functional characteristics during exercise that mimics the work rate in soccer.  相似文献

Sweat lactate reflects eccrine gland metabolism. However, the metabolic tendencies of eccrine glands in a hot versus thermoneutral environment are not well understood. Sixteen male volunteers completed a maximal cycling trial and two 60-min cycling trials [30°C?=?30±1°C and 18°C?=?18±1°C wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT)]. The participants were requested to maintain a cadence of 60 rev?·?min?1 with the intensity individualized at ~ 90% of the ventilatory threshold. Sweat samples at 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60?min were analysed for lactate concentration. Sweat rate at 30°C (1380±325?ml?·?h?1) was significantly greater (P<0.05) than at 18°C (632±311?ml?·?h?1). Sweat lactate concentration was significantly greater (P<0.05) at each time point during the 18°C trial, with values between trials tending to converge across time. During the 30°C trial, both heart rate (20, 30, 40, 50 and 60?min) and rectal temperature (30, 40, 50 and 60?min) were significantly higher than in the 18°C trial. Higher sweat lactate concentrations coupled with lower sweat rates may indicate a greater relative contribution of oxygen-independent metabolism within eccrine glands during exercise at 18°C. Decreases in sweat lactate concentration across time suggest either greater dilution due to greater sweat volume or increased reliance on aerobic metabolism within eccrine glands. Nine male student games players consumed either flavoured water (0.1 g carbohydrate, Na+ 6 mmol · l?1), a solution containing 6.5% carbohydrate-electrolytes (6.5 g carbohydrate, Na+ 21 mmol · l?1) or a taste placebo (Na+ 2 mmol · l?1) during an intermittent shuttle test performed on three separate occasions at an ambient temperature of 30°C (dry bulb). The test involved five 15-min sets of repeated cycles of walking and variable speed running, each separated by a 4-min rest (part A of the test), followed by 60 s run/60 s rest until exhaustion (part B of the test). The participants drank 6.5 ml · kg?1 of fluid as a bolus just before exercise and thereafter 4.5 ml · kg?1 during every exercise set and rest period (19 min). There was a trial order effect. The total distance completed by the participants was greater in trial 3 (8441 ± 873 m) than in trial 1 (6839 ± 512, P < 0.05). This represented a 19% improvement in exercise capacity. However, the trials were performed in a random counterbalanced order and the participants completed 8634 ± 653 m, 7786 ± 741 m and 7099 ± 647 m in the flavoured water (FW), placebo (P) and carbohydrate-electrolyte (CE) trials, respectively (P = 0.08). Sprint performance was not different between the trials but was impaired over time (FW vs P vs CE: set 1, 2.41 ± 0.02 vs 2.39 ± 0.03 vs 2.39 ± 0.03 s; end set, 2.46 ± 0.03 vs 2.47 ± 0.03 vs 2.47 ± 0.02 s; main

effect time, P < 0.01). The rate of rise in rectal temperature was greater in the carbohydrate-electrolyte trial (rise in rectal temperature/duration of trial, °C · h?1; FW vs CE, P < 0.05; P vs CE, N.S.). Blood glucose concentrations were higher in the carbohydrate-electrolyte than in the other two trials (FW vs P vs CE: rest, 4.4 ± 0.1 vs 4.3 ± 0.1 vs 4.2 ± 0.1 mmol · l?1; end of exercise, 5.4 ± 0.3 vs 6.4 ± 0.6 vs 7.2 ± 0.5 mmol · l?1; main effect trial, P < 0.05; main effect time, P < 0.01). Plasma free fatty acid concentrations at the end of exercise were lower in the carbohydrate-electrolyte trial than in the other two trials (FW vs P vs CE: 0.57 ± 0.08 vs 0.53 ± 0.11 vs 0.29 ± 0.04 mmol · l?1; interaction, P < 0.01). The correlation between the rate of rise in rectal temperature (°C · h?1) and the distance completed was ?0.91, ?0.92 and ?0.96 in the flavoured water, placebo and carbohydrate-electrolyte conditions, respectively (P < 0.01). Heart rate, blood pressure, plasma ammonia, blood lactate, plasma volume and rate of perceived exertion were not different between the three fluid trials. Although drinking the carbohydrate-electrolyte solution induced greater metabolic changes than the flavoured water and placebo solutions, it is unlikely that in these unacclimated males carbohydrate availability was a limiting factor in the performance of intermittent running in hot environmental conditions.  相似文献

This study investigated the effect of a single session of resistance exercise on postprandial lipaemia. Eleven healthy normolipidaemic men with a mean age of 23 (standard error = 1.4) years performed two trials at least 1 week apart in a counterbalanced randomized design. In each trial, participants consumed a test meal (1.2?g fat, 1.1?g carbohydrate, 0.2?g protein and 68 kJ?·?kg?1 body mass) between 08.00 and 09.00?h following a 12?h fast. The afternoon before one trial, the participants performed an 88?min bout of resistance exercise. Before the other trial, the participants were inactive (control trial). Resistance exercise was performed using free weights and included four sets of 10 repetitions of each of 11 exercises. Sets were performed at 80% of 10-repetition maximum with a 2?min work and rest interval. Venous blood samples were obtained in the fasted state and at intervals for 6?h postprandially. Fasting plasma triacylglycerol (TAG) concentration did not differ significantly between control (1.03?±?0.13?mmol?·?l?1) and exercise (0.94?±?0.09?mmol?·?l?1) trials (mean?± standard error). Similarly, the 6?h total area under the plasma TAG concentration versus time curve did not differ significantly between the control (9.84?±?1.40?mmol?·?l?1?·?6?h?1) and exercise (9.38?±?1.12?mmol?·?l?1?·?6?h?1) trials. Acute ingestion of ketone salts induces nutritional ketosis by elevating β-hydroxybutyrate (βHB), but few studies have examined the metabolic effects of ingestion prior to exercise. Nineteen trained cyclists (12 male, 7 female) undertook graded exercise (8 min each at ~30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, and 80% VO2peak) on a cycle ergometer on two occasions separated by either 7 or 14 days. Trials included ingestion of boluses of either (i) plain water (3.8?mL?kg?body mass?1) (CON) or (ii) βHB salts (0.38?g?kg?body mass?1) in plain water (3.8?mL?kg body mass?1) (KET), at both 60 min and 15 min prior to exercise. During KET, plasma [βHB] increased to 0.33?±?0.16?mM prior to exercise and 0.44?±?0.15?mM at the end of exercise (both p?.05). Plasma glucose was 0.44?±?0.27?mM lower (p?.01) 30?min after ingestion of KET and remained ~0.2?mM lower throughout exercise compared to CON (p?.001). Respiratory exchange ratio (RER) was higher during KET compared to CON (p?.001) and 0.03–0.04 higher from 30%VO2peak to 60%VO2peak (all p?.05). No differences in plasma lactate, rate of perceived exertion, or gross or delta efficiency were observed between trials. Gastrointestinal symptoms were reported in 13 out of 19 participants during KET. Acute ingestion of βHB salts induces nutritional ketosis and alters the metabolic response to exercise in trained cyclists. Elevated RER during KET may be indicative of increased ketone body oxidation during exercise, but at the plasma βHB concentrations achieved, ingestion of βHB salts does not affect lactate appearance, perceived exertion, or muscular efficiency.  相似文献
