A study of the Canadian Conspectus online database explored the reliability of the data and assessed the validity of the Conspectus methodology. A cross-library analysis demonstrated that the assessments for existing collection strength (ECS) and current collecting intensity (CCI) for the 51 subdivisions of psychology were not representative of the libraries' collection sizes or their materials budgets. The CCI assessments for each library for the subject subdivision for memory (BF370-BF395) were also examined. The results of correlation analyses demonstrated that the library's collection size and its materials budget were better predictors of the level of current collecting intensity (as measured by the number of recent acquisitions on memory) than the CCI assessment. Findings drawn from the literature of psychophysics and opinion measurement, as well as from relevance research, demonstrate problems with biasing effects in the category scaling methodology used in the Conspectus. 相似文献

Reference collection development should be seen as an integral part of the overall management of academic research library collections. The reference librarian benefits from participation in the development of collection development policy statements based on a collection evaluation using the Research Libraries Group (RLG) Conspectus. The writing of cormprehensive collection development policy statements using the RLG Conspectus to evaluate subject collections requires that collection management librarians and reference librarians work closely together and integrate the development of the reference collection into overall collection development plans for the library. This article discusses some of the functions of collection management divisions and the potential components of a Conspectus-based comprehensive collection development policy statement. The sharing of the process between the collection management librarian and the reference librarian/selector is described. Benefits the reference librarian gains from the process are discussed. 相似文献

Academic libraries are challenged with managing collection budgets for purchasing multidisciplinary ebook packages while equitably distributing funds for print and electronic monographs across subjects. McGill Library's science and engineering monograph holdings were analyzed using OCLC's WorldShare Collection Evaluation (WCE). Researchers mapped Conspectus subject divisions and categories to relevant university departments and evaluated holdings in comparison with department metrics to provide a fuller picture for collection development decision making. Findings show that WCE can be used in combination with circulation data and enrollment and staffing numbers to provide insight into the purchasing and use patterns of monographs down to the department level. 相似文献

Abstract The WLN Conspectus determines a library's acquisition commitment (growth rate) by considering what percentage of book publishing output it acquired. In 2000, the Bowker Annual changed its source of book publishing from the American Book Publishing Record to Books in Printwith an attendant increase in recorded output. That increase has serious implications for libraries using the WLN formula to determine collecting levels. The recent Art assessment at Jacksonville State University demonstrates how Bowker's change in book title output affects the library's acquisition commitment level, and what adjustments the library made to maintain consistency and continuity. 相似文献

ABSTRACTBuilding a library’s collection requires more than collecting print materials and shelving them in the stacks. The growth of e-books and e-serials over the past decade has been phenomenal. Given the scope of its collection building, the Library of Congress (LOC) has been required to actively pursue the acquisition and management of e-books and e-serials in its permanent collection. This article surveys how the LOC has taken advantage of existing structures and how it has pursued new paths to succeed in this undertaking. Summary The proliferation of electronic resources led the librarians of Cornell University's Mann Library to develop genre statements to aid in their selection decisions. Genre statements, one for each of five classes of electronic information, supplement the collection development policy and assist the genre specialists in selecting titles by outlining general and specific criteria. Diversity is commonly invoked as a goal for libraries in a variety of domains, including collections. This study explores how diversity language is used to characterize collection development efforts at a sample of large North American academic libraries, through content analysis of strategic planning documents as well as library webpages providing information about diversity efforts. The topic of collection diversity was found to be not consistently addressed in these documents. While 90 % of the institutions whose strategic plans were examined mentioned diversity in some way, less than half of these did so in relation to collections; about one-third of the libraries with diversity information pages omitted reference to collections in these documents. Strategic plans and webpages that mentioned collection diversity often did so cursorily, and in vague terms that lacked specific details about the nature and purpose of diversification. This indicates that the academic libraries still have far to go in developing a shared conceptualization of what collection diversity involves. Analysis of updated documents, retrieved two years after the initial sample, suggests that there may be increasing attention to social justice concerns in these contexts, which would potentially enable greater precision in discussions of collection diversification. 相似文献

Core lists of recommended resources have long been used as selection tools for collection development in hospital libraries. However, hospital librarians now rely on the Internet for access to up-to-date information to supplement materials available within their libraries. Many libraries now either maintain a library Web page or provide input for their institution's Web page. The difficulty is determining what sites to include on their page. This article is a basic guide to recommended links for hospital libraries. It is intended as a starting place for hospital librarians who wish to create (or add to) a Web page of good links to be used for answering reference questions, or as a list for library users.
