Academic libraries are facing increasing pressure to prove their value in the face of outdated public perceptions, financial challenges, and competition from other information providers. They are investing time, energy, and money to advertise their resources and services in a variety of ways. Despite these efforts, few libraries know whether these investments are meeting their objectives. Academic libraries should follow the advertising assessment practices used by businesses today to assess the cost, interaction, and outcomes of their advertising to determine its effectiveness. Academic libraries are at a crossroads, facing increasing competition from other student services within their institutions and from commercial entities that duplicate their services. Examining some broader trends in education leads to suggestions as to how libraries might re-examine legacy services and assumptions and consider new directions. This article examines competition between large, inexpensive bookstores and public libraries. Using the National Household Education Survey and logit and multinomial logit estimation procedures, the study finds that large bookstores reduce the probability of household library use for some, but not all, uses of the library. Children's programming is found to be mostly immune to competition whereas job-related and informational uses of the library are reduced. The measure of crowding out is largely from diminished library use by middle-income households. Because this group traditionally uses the library most frequently, the impact of these bookstores could potentially alter the funding and services libraries traditionally offer, changing their redistributional capabilities.  相似文献

Library cooperatives will evolve more into automated library networks which are generally more cost-effective, less labor-intensive, and provide more and better service. The more successful networks are those where the member libraries have a signifcant commitment with funds from their local libraries' operating budgets and which view the services as an integral part of their essential operations. Cost-effective networks are characterized by greater competition, less state and federal control, and more research and development. The network's economic revolution for public libraries is beginning to occur where automated networks have extended services directly to the users in their homes.  相似文献
