Abstract

The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to investigate the relationship between strength and achievement in physical education among 200 college women by comparing grip strength with grades in the instructional physical education courses and (2) to compare the results obtained on college women with those of college men in the study by Tinkle and Montoye reported in this issue of the Research Quarterly. A table of random numbers was used to secure the sample. The results indicated that grip strength among college women was significantly related to achievement in physical education instructional courses as measured by grades. Also, grip strength was found to be directly related to and probably dependent upon body weight and only indirectly related to height in college women. The relationship between grades in physical education and grip strength among college women substantiates the results of the college men's study.  相似文献

Abstract

The following measures were recorded for third- and sixth-grade children: height; weight; grip strength of the dominant and nondominant hands; elbow flexion and elbow extension strength; hip flexion and hip extension strength; dynamic balance; ball-throwing accuracy; speed of hand-arm movement; eye-hand coordination; stimulus discrimination and hand speed; perceptual ability; academic achievement; and intelligence. It was concluded that sixth-grade boys had, in general, the most favorable recorded measures, followed by sixth-grade girls, third-grade boys, and third-grade girls, these differences usually being significant.  相似文献

Background: Evidence shows an association between grip strength and health;however, grip strength cut-offs for the detection of metabolic syndrome(MetS) in Latin American populations are scarce. The purpose of this study was to determine cut-offs of normalized grip strength(NGS)for the detection of MetS in a large nonrepresentative sample of a collegiate student population from Colombia. Methods: A total of 1795 volunteers(61.4% female;age = 20.68 ± 3.10 years, mean ± SD), ranging between 18 and 30 years of age participated in the study. Strength was estimated using a handheld dynamometer and normalized to body mass(handgrip strength(kg)/body mass(kg)). Anthropometrics, serum lipids indices, blood pressure, and fasting plasma glucose were measured. Body composition was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis. MetS was defined as including ≥3 of the 5 metabolic abnormalities according to the International Diabetes Federation definition. A metabolic risk score was computed from the following components: waist circumference, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, glucose, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Results: Receiver operating curve analysis showed significant discriminatory accuracy of NGS in identifying the thresholds and risk categories.Lower strength was associated with increased prevalence of MetS. In males, weak, intermediate, and strong NGS values at these points were<0.466, 0.466-0.615, >0.615, respectively. In females, these cut-off points were <0.332, 0.332-0.437, >0.437, respectively. Conclusion: Our sex-specific cut-offs of NGS could be incorporated into a clinical setting for identifying college students at cardiometabolic disease risk.  相似文献

Abstract

Cardiorespiratory and anthropometric assessments were made on 95 randomly selected young college males enrolled in three physical fitness sections and one tennis course, each lasting eight weeks. Laboratory and field measures were utilized to report and evaluate changes in functional fitness and physique variables, including nine selected fat and girth measurements, height and weight, timed vital capacity, Harvard Step Test, grip strength, mile run time, and vertical jump. Analysis of the data yielded the following conclusions: (a) Eight weeks of physical fitness training can produce significant improvements in physique and circulorespiratory characteristics; (b) A skill-oriented tennis class demonstrates no significant physical improvements; (c) Body weight can be increased while body fat is lost; (d) Vital capacity has little value in reflecting levels of physical performance; (e) Specificity of a physical fitness program will influence its outcome.  相似文献

Abstract

Ages, heights, weights, and 24 static (cable tensiometer) strength test scores were obtained from 81 college men enrolled in service course classes at the University of Oregon during the 1963–64 academic year. Of the 276 intercorrelations between strength scores, 215 were significant (p > .01; r ≥ .285). In general, when age, height, and weight were held constant, the intercorrelations between the strength scores from the different segments of the body were not greatly changed from those of the zero-order correlations between the same strength scores. Five functional clusters or groupings of strength were isolated and identified by means of the application of cluster analysis to the intercorrelations between the strength tests and by an analysis of muscle actions involved in the performance of each of the strength tests. The findings in this study disclosed five clusters or groupings of strength which were specific to shoulder, trunk, neck, wrist, and hip joints. They could also be described as arm and forearm strength, trunk strength, neck strength, hand strength, and thigh and leg strength.  相似文献

Abstract

Twelve anthropometric measures and 23 derived indexes were obtained from 72 girls at each level along with 25 cable tensiometer strength tests which were averaged as the criterion. The measures, indexes, and strength criterion were intercorrelated. The highest multiple correlations with the strength criterion were .822, using height times the cube root of weight and arm girth/thigh girth at the elementary level; .784, using chest girth times standing height and shoulder width at the junior high level; and .607, using arm girth and shoulder width/hip width at the senior high level. Combining all levels gave an r of .844 using age and weight. Anthropometric measures intercorrelated higher for elementary school girls, but the indexes intercorrelated higher at the junior and senior high levels than at the elementary level.  相似文献

Abstract

The purposes of this study were to generate correction equations for self-reported height and weight quartiles and to test the accuracy of the body mass index (BMI) classification based on corrected self-reported height and weight among 739 male and 434 female college students. The BMIqc (from height and weight quartile-specific, corrected self-reported measurements) provided a more accurate estimation of BMI classification than BMIc (from corrected self-reported measurements) and BMIs (from self-reported measurements) by showing a greater ability to predict cases with either a high or a low BMI category while still maintaining a high specificity. However, the equations are applicable only to Caucasian college student populations, so cross-validation in similar populations is needed before they are used more broadly.  相似文献

Abstract

Despite the popularity of open-wheel car racing, scientific literature about the physical characteristics of competitive race car drivers is scarce. The purpose of this study was to compare selected fitness parameters of experienced and junior open-wheel race car drivers. The experienced drivers consisted of five Formula One, two GP2 and two Formula 3 drivers, and the nine junior drivers drove in the Formula Master, Koenig, BMW and Renault series. The following fitness parameters were tested: multiple reactions, multiple anticipation, postural stability, isometric upper body strength, isometric leg extension strength, isometric grip strength, cyclic foot speed and jump height. The group differences were calculated using the Mann-Whitney U-test. Because of the multiple testing strategy used, the statistical significance was Bonferroni corrected and set at P < 0.004. Significant differences between the experienced and junior drivers were found only for the jump height parameter (P = 0.002). The experienced drivers tended to perform better in leg strength (P = 0.009), cyclic foot speed (P = 0.024) and grip strength (P = 0.058). None of the other variables differed between the groups. The results suggested that the experienced drivers were significantly more powerful than the junior drivers: they tended to be quicker and stronger (18% to 25%) but without statistical significance. The experienced drivers demonstrated excellent strength and power compared with other high-performance athletes.  相似文献

Abstract

Eighteen girth, skinfold, cardiovascular, cable tension strength, and response time measurements were obtained in order to assess the effects of weight reduction on a group of college wrestlers. In 10 of the 18 measurements mean differences were found to be significant at the .05 level from the statistical analysis provided by a repeated measures analysis of variance. It was generally concluded that for the ten subjects studied up to 7 percent of body weight may be lost without adversely affecting factors apparently related to wrestling performance —strength, cardiovascular endurance, and response time.  相似文献

Abstract

A test was made of the general activation concept as it relates to strength performance. No difference in grip strength was found between an experimental group (N = 35), who performed maximal leg strength exercises between grip trials (in an attempt to raise their level of activation through induced muscular tension), and a control group (N = 35) who read between grip trials. Also, there was no difference in grip strength performance over trials for both groups. Intercorrelations of strength scores between limbs for the experimental group showed more specificity than generality. While these results fail to support a generalized activation effect in the static strength performance context, they do provide additional evidence of neuromuscular specificity in motor ability.  相似文献

Abstract

The physique of women students at Newcomb College of Tulane University. I. Stature and weight. Harley N. Gould, Department of Biology, Newcomb College of Tulane University.

The investigation makes use of twenty years' records of physical measurements taken twice a year on a student population of whom about 80 per cent are from Louisiana. The mean stature of 2991 entering freshmen of the years 1909 to 1928, inclusive, is 63.34 inches and the mean weight of 2993 of them is 116.22 pounds. In the twenty years involved there is no consistent upward or downward trend of freshman height or weight, though the students of the last nine years average slightly taller than those of the first eleven years. Grouped by ages, the entering students fail to show any consistent relation of height or weight with age.

During four college sessions, students increase in height, on the average, three-tenths of an inch, and in weight, nine-tenths of a pound. Height increment is added chiefly in the first two years, and more in winter than in summer. Weight consistently tends to decrease in the winter and increase in the summer throughout the four college years, except for the winter of the freshman year, when the losses and gains nearly balance. Since 1919-20 the seasonal change in weight is much less than in the preceding years. A trend toward slenderness is indicated from 1924 to 1927.  相似文献

Abstract

In this study, a strength test for boys 9 through 12 years of age in grades 4, 5, and 6 was constructed based upon cable tension strength tests. From 18 cable tension strength tests, the following four were selected by multiple correlation procedures: shoulder extension, trunk extension, knee extension, and ankle plantar flexion (ankle extension). The total of these four tests was designated the strength composite. Norms were prepared based on age and weight, utilizing Roger's method in the construction of Strength Index norms; the subjects were 826 boys from ten communities located in various parts of Oregon. A strength quotient was derived by dividing the achieved by the norm strength composite and multiplying by 100.  相似文献

Abstract

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the yearly changes in body composition as well as absolute and relative isokinetic forearm flexion and extension strength of high school wrestlers. Evaluations of body composition (underwater weighing) were performed on 27 high school wrestlers prior to three consecutive seasons. In addition, isokinetic forearm flexion and extension strength values at 180°/s (Cybex II) were available for 20 of the subjects. The mean ages at the times of laboratory testing were 15.5 (± .5), 16.5 (± .5), and 17.5 (± .5) years. Repeated measures ANOVA or ANCOVA with Tukey post-hoc comparisons were used to locate significant (p<.05) differences across age for height, body weight, relative fat, body density, fat weight, fat-free weight, absolute muscular strength, and muscular strength covaried for body weight and fat-free weight. There were yearly increases in all variables except fat weight, forearm flexion covaried for fat-free weight and forearm extension covaried for fat-free weight. The results of this study indicated that the improved wrestling performance and the increase in weight classification which normally occurs during high school are, in part, a function of yearly changes in body composition and muscular strength.  相似文献

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the relative endurance ability of women in terms of muscle mass, static muscle strength, and critical occluding tension levels (COTL). Women physical education majors volunteered as subjects for this study (N = 56). The percentages of grip strength used for the relative endurance tests were 30%, 45%, 60%, and 75% with local circulation to the forearm muscles intact and artificially occluded by a pressure cuff. Analysis of the data revealed that there was no significant difference in the endurance times of high- and low-strength women. The relationship between grip strength and relative endurance time for each tension level was insignificant (r = ?.23 to ?.34). These findings were discussed in light of the relatively small differences in muscle mass and similarity in COTL of high- and low-strength women.  相似文献

Purpose

Following a cardiac event patients are at risk for deficits in mobility and function. However, measures of physical performance are not commonly used and have not been extensively studied in patients enrolled in cardiac rehabilitation. The purpose of this study was to determine the reliability and the minimal detectable change (MDC) of gait speed, 5 times sit to stand (5 STS) and hand grip strength for individuals enrolled in cardiac rehabilitation.

Methods

Forty-nine individuals enrolled in phase II or III cardiac rehabilitation participated in the study. Gait speed, 5 STS, and hand grip strength were measured over two sessions held on the same day. Intraclass correlation coefficient was used to determine reliability and MDC95 was calculated to measure responsiveness.

Results

All 3 measures showed high reliability (ICC for gait speed = 0.96, 5 STS = 0.87, right hand grip strength = 0.97, left hand grip strength = 0.97). The MDC95 for gait speed was 0.16 meters/second, 3.12 seconds for 5 STS, 5.2 kilograms for right and 5.1 kilograms for left hand grip strength.

Conclusion

Gait speed, 5 STS, and hand grip strength are reliable and responsive measures for patients in cardiac rehabilitation. Findings support their use in clinical practice and future cardiac rehabilitation studies.Key Words: cardiac rehabilitation, gait speed, sit to stand  相似文献
