"Regardless of the particular reason an observation system was put in place, we are expanding the use of the data from that system to help users in other areas," Ms. Barbara Ryan answered when asked about the necessity and importance of connecting the existing observation and research networks of different disciplines and for different purposes together in an interview with BCAS reporter SONG Jianlan, at a brief break between meetings on April 23 during the session of the 35 th International Symposium for Remote Sensing of Environment (ISRSE35). Now let's follow her to have a glance at this "system of systems".  相似文献

Among the galaxy of research and development organizations in northwest Beijing's Zhongguancun district, known as China's Silicon Valley, two are especially well-known to IT researchers: Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA), and, within a few blocks on the other side of the street, the CAS Institute of Automation (CASIA). While most people in Chinese scientific organizations strive to move to a large foreign counterpart, Dr. Stan Z. Li (LI Ziqing) moves against the stream.  相似文献

"It is a very wonderful story to tell," in the interview with BCAS reporter SONG Jianlan before the opening of the 35 th International Symposium on Remote Sensing of Environment (ISRSE), Dr. Ghassem R. Asrar, Director of the World Climate Research Program (WCRP) and former Earth Science Associate Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) could not help expressing his joyfulness and satisfaction at the wonderful job the global community has done in just thirty years: building the Earth observing system (EOS),turning the observations into useful information and making it available to scientists and decision makers around the world. Let's follow him to celebrate the contributions of Earth observations to our understanding of the Earth system and climate, a sub-system of our planet, and recognize China's current and future role in this system. Meanwhile we will have an opportunity to learn about his experiences of EOS and expectation of China's bigger participation in internationally cooperative projects in the field of space-based remote sensing, for future decades.  相似文献

The fossils of a petite pterosaur ("winged lizard" in Greek, a group of winged reptiles that ruled the skies from 206 million to 65 million years ago) has been discovered by CAS paleont'ologists and their Brazilian co-workers in northeast China's Liaoning Province. The discovery was published 11 February online by the Proceedings" of the National Academy of Sciences.  相似文献

Ajoint study by Prof. ZHANG Zhibin from the CAS Institute of Zoology and his co-workers from Norway, US and Swiss have indicated that historical outbreaks of migratory locusts in China were associated with cold spells, suggesting that China's projected climate warming could decrease the pest's numbers. The study was published in Proceedings of theNational Academy of Sciences on 17 September, 2007.  相似文献

Freshman QIN Dahe was paging through an issue of Acta Geographica Sinica in the library of Geology and Geography Department, Lanzhou University in 1965 when his eyes were suddenly caught by an article. It was a paper on fundamental features of glaciers in China written by SHI Yafeng and XIE Zichu, pioneers of Chinese glaciology. Back in high school Qin had read about Shi's heroic investigation on the 8012m-high Mount Xixiabangma at central Himalayas, so he set to read the article carefully.  相似文献

In June 1999, China's central authorities promulgated a "Decision on the Deepening of Educational Reform and the Full Promotion of Quality-oriented Education," stressing that, rather than doing well in examinations, students should develop their competence in other important aspects, ranging from creativity, moral thinking, general knowledge and practical skills to culture and physical fitness. Since then, a decade has passed. The development of this comprehensive competence-based education drive has been "far from satisfactory," according to a recent study carried out by the CAS Academic Divisions (CASAD), China's top advisory body in science and technology.  相似文献

"The only thing I'd like to say is that everybody has a role to play - every country and every people in the country. The role has to be fair, feasible and realistic, both in the context of the country itself and in the context of the enormous global challenge to tackle."-- Prof. Corinne Le Quere  相似文献

The sink-source imbalance in the global carbon cycle is a "hot spot" for scholars on the subject in the present-day world. So far, the CO2 sink's location, size, variation and the mechanism underlying its ever-changing trend are all controversial topics. Currently, the mainstream research in this aspect is concentrated mainly on the organic carbon's cycle while little, if not, attention is paid to the current status of the inorganic carbon sink.  相似文献

Soon after the devastating earthquake taking place on last 12 May in Sichuan, the CAS leadership promptly mobilized its researchers to dedicate their expertise to the nationwide drive of the disaster's relief and reduction. A leading group was established to coordinate the Academy's efforts in this regard. All of the eight CAS institutions located in Sichuan were organized to do everything possible to reduce their losses to the minimum. At the same time, a trans-departmental and interdisciplinary taskforce was formed to provide a powerful S&T backing for the nationwide drive.  相似文献

It was some 100 kilometers away from the Three Gorges Dam down the Yangtze River where Prof, JIANG Mingxi and his colleagues came across the plants. Local people found them a few clays before, and experts were invited from the CAS Wuhan Botanical Garden to confirm their identity. Would they turn out to be the No.1 endangered species previously thought to grow only in the area that was entirely flooded with the filling of the Reservoir?  相似文献

When studying Lawrence’s works, nobody could evade a sensitive question: sex. Sexuality as a source of personal and social redemption or denied, of manifold disorders, is central to Lawrence's vision of life. Lawrence is, of course, best, if not most favorably, known as a writer on sex. His most widely read novels revolve about the problem, and a very large portion of his poetry (up to about 1920) deals with it. Reasons why Lawrence was attracted to sex are several. First, he was wise enoug…  相似文献

Articles 28 and 29 of the Trademark Law of the People's Republic of China provide that where any trademark applied for registration is identical with or similar to a trademark another person has registered in the same or similar goods, or a trademark that has been preliminarily approved, or one that was first filed or where any trademark is identical with or similar to a trademark that was filed on the same day or was used earlier, the application for the registration of the trademark shall be refused. In this article the examination of the relative grounds for trademark refusal will be probed into.  相似文献

Rainfall and air temperature data from six meteorological stations above the Bengbu Sluice and hydrological and water resources evaluation data from the Bengbu Hydrological Station in the Huai River Basin from 1961 to 2008 are used to analyze the impact of changes in climatic factors on the amount of water resources in the Basin. There was a general trend of rise in its average annual air temperature, with the highest increase of 0.289oC/10a recorded at Bengbu in Anhui Province. Rising rainfall was mainly observed in the western part of the study area, while rainfall actually declined in the eastern part, i.e. the middle reaches of the Huai River. The Average rainfall in the study area was in a vaguely declining trend. In other words, the rainfall in the Basin is still much affected by natural fluctuations. On the whole, there was a trend of gradual decrease in the quantity of the Basin’s water resources for the period under study. Water resources quantity is found to fall with decreasing rainfall and rising air temperature. Regression analysis is used to establish a mathematical model between water resources quantity and climatic factors (i.e. air temperature and rainfall) in order to explore the impact of climate change on water resources in the Basin. Moreover, various scenarios are set to quantitatively analyze the response of water resources to climate change. Sensitivity analysis shows that changes in rainfall have a much bigger impact on its water resources quantity than changes in its air temperature.  相似文献

Decades ago, he invented a cascade extraction theory and technique that have greatly facilitated the production of the so-called "industrial vitamins," shifting China's role from a low-profit exporter of raw ores to the world's dominant supplier of separated individual rare earth compounds and metals in high purity. Now, long past retirement age, he is still actively engaged in the development of China's rare earth industry by calling for planned exploitation and resource conservation. Prof. Xu Guangxian (Kwang-Hsien Hsu), 89, a CAS Member and laureate of the 2008 State Supreme S&T Award, is among the most outstanding scientists of our time.  相似文献

For today‘s civilized world, with its dotcoms, sitcoms. ATMs,and ATVs.the first 3.5 billion years of life on Earth are a bit of an emharrassment. It was only a few hundred million years ago that trilobites prowled the seas, More primitive life subscribed to two or three basic lifestyles: algal mat spineless worm, or bacterial blob. Before that, in the Archean Eon more than 2. 5 billion years ago-well, that kind of life is what Lysol is for.  相似文献
