Previous research on academic entrepreneurship and engagement with industry has found that the behaviour of academics is influenced by their local social context. However, we know little about the mechanisms that produce this effect. We argue that academic scientists’ industry engagement is influenced significantly by the behaviour of their peers, that is, the behaviour of colleagues of similar seniority. Using insights from social psychology, we hypothesize that these peer effects are produced by the mechanism of social comparison. In an analysis of data from multiple sources for 1370 UK academic scientists and engineers, we find that peer effects are stronger for early career individuals and weaker for star scientists, suggesting the incidence of social comparison. We argue that individuals look to their immediate peers for inspiration, because they view them as an important reference group and use them as a benchmark for their own ambitions and behaviours. Our findings have important implications for how universities may encourage scientists’ behaviours by paying attention to local work contexts.  相似文献

学术创业企业的成长伴随着从科研网络向产业网络的跨越,为了解析其成长机理,本文以中美两国共14个学术创业案例为依据,从“社会网络—合法性”视角分析企业网络的动态演化,并着重探讨了各阶段合法性约束的种类、身份转化劣势的作用机制以及合法性策略选择的情境条件。研究发现:(1)学术创业者在创业者存在身份转换劣势,并给企业带来合法性约束。(2)根据网络边界跨越方式的不同,创业者建立合法性的策略可分为直驱型策略和迂回型策略。(3)合法性策略的选择受到企业所在网络的多样性和自身技术新颖性的影响。基于学术创业的特殊情境,论文提出身份转换劣势的概念,并为企业成长理论和合法性理论做出贡献。  相似文献

While much prior research has focused upon how the Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs) and other contextual characteristics shape the level of university spinoffs (USO), there is little research on entrepreneurial potential among individual academics, and to the best of our knowledge, no comparative studies with other types of spinoffs exist to date. In this paper we focus on an important but neglected aspect of knowledge transfer from academic research involving the indirect flow to entrepreneurship by individuals with a university education background who become involved in new venture creation by means of corporate spinoffs (CSO) after gaining industrial experience, rather than leaving university employment to found a new venture as an academic spinoff. We argue that the commercial knowledge gained by industry experience is potentially more valuable for entrepreneurial performance compared to the academic knowledge gained by additional research experience at a university. This leads us to posit that the average performance of CSOs will be higher than comparable USOs, but the gains from founder‘s prior experiences will be relatively higher among USOs whose founders lack the corporate context. We investigate these propositions in a comparative study tracking the complete population of USOs and CSOs among the Swedish knowledge-intensive sectors between 1994 and 2002.  相似文献

 企业创业导向与创业绩效之间关系的“黑箱问题”一直是创业管理学界关注的焦点问题之一。在对主要学术文献数据库中有关企业创业导向与创业绩效之间关系相关文献进行系统检索的基础上,利用Meta统计学方法进行了定量的综合分析。研究结果显示:企业创业导向与创业绩效之间存在显著的正向关系,并且创业结果导向较创业过程导向对创业绩效的影响更为显著,而企业创业导向对于创业绩效中客观绩效与主观绩效的影响不存在显著差异。此外,以创业者风险感知和创业者风险倾向为调节变量的研究发现,创业者风险感知要比创业者风险倾向在企业创业导向与创业绩效之间起到更为显著的调节作用。  相似文献

The ability to identify early-stage venture potential, which has traditionally relied on experts, is challenging because new ideas are uncertain. However, judgment from a large number of evaluators can effectively identify promising ventures. This paper empirically studies whether crowd-based information generates informative feedback for entrepreneurs and seed investors. Using data on 701 early-stage founders of new ventures examined by 2600 evaluators, I estimated the effects of crowd-based ratings on survival and securing seed funds. I find that the crowd rating was uncorrelated with subsequent financing events from seed investors but increased a venture's probability of continuation by 3.1 percentage points. This effect became stronger as the number of evaluators increased. This finding highlights that a judgment aggregation offers information for nascent venture founders.  相似文献

This study was driven by an initial finding that female founders' participation rate in Israeli accelerators is significantly higher (15.3 %) than their participation rate in the Israeli startup sector (7.4 %). Linking accelerators' design to the known barriers to female entrepreneurship, we examined how accelerators may enhance female entrepreneurship by addressing their specific needs. Based on a dataset (N = 779) of structured interviews with startup founders who participated in accelerator programs in Israel during 2011–2019, we present evidence that female founders seek and gain more entrepreneurial knowledge, network building, and entrepreneurial self-efficacy during their participation in accelerators than do male founders. Female founders also seek to increase their legitimacy more than do their male counterparts but did not report making more progress in this aspect. Finally, both the goal of and progress in obtaining access to capital and improving fundraising skills received lower ratings from female founders than from male founders. We further ask whether accelerators are more helpful for women because they are better adapted to the female gender or because they are generally better adapted to founders with those background conditions that often characterize women. We found that the startup's stage of development and the founder's prior entrepreneurial experience mediated most gender differences, supporting the latter possibility. We discuss the implications of our findings for accelerators and other support programs as a means of increasing women's participation rates in innovative entrepreneurship.  相似文献

This paper focuses on the creation of new markets through technological exaptation i.e. the repurposing of existing technologies to serve new functions in a different market domain. We conceptualize the ability of new ventures to create new market applications for existing technologies as dependent on the knowledge, skills, and cognitive frames developed by the founding teams’ members during their professional careers. Specifically, we hypothesize that the extent of the founding team's employment experience across different organizations influences the probability that the new venture will create a new market through technological exaptation. We also explain why experience in entrepreneurially prominent organizations changes this relationship at various levels of prior employment experience. We test our arguments using data on blockchain startups (and their founders/co-founders) in the worldwide energy sector established between 2010 and 2019. The results show that the likelihood that a new venture develops a new market application for blockchain technology in the energy sector is associated with the professional experience of the founding team members. In this paper, we present an explorative study that develops our understanding of the relationship between late-career entrepreneurship and innovation-driven business activity. Based on observations of 2903 solo founders of new ventures in Germany in 2008–2017, we offer first and robust evidence that late-career entrepreneurs (~50 years and above) are more likely than younger founders to introduce product/service innovations that are ‘new to the market’. Our explorations specifically reveal that older founders who draw on personal financial resources and combine their innovation orientation with prior managerial experience are most likely to generate the types of innovations that bring new products or services to the market. We conclude by discussing how our study's insights contribute to the research agenda on innovations in late-career entrepreneurship.  相似文献

To perform, new technology-based firms (NTBFs) need to develop value for customers that distinguish them from others in the market. Therefore, the development of novelty-oriented value propositions are important, and may be influenced by several factors. We argue that the propensity to become more novelty-oriented can be influenced by an internal drive to grow (growth orientation) and by external contributions (business networks). Hence, the purpose of this paper is to analyse how business networks and growth orientation effects on the novelty orientation of NTBF value propositions. Based on survey data from 401 NTBFs founded between 2013 and 2015, in the nascent start-up phase novelty-oriented value propositions of NTBFs positively relate to informal (management) networks, as well as founders' attitudes towards growth. Thus, such networks and attitudes from founders should be supported in the very early phases of start-up if novelty orientation is to be preferred as a performance determinant.  相似文献

Establishing the microfoundations of academic entrepreneurship requires closer scrutiny of a key actor contributing to this phenomenon—the university scientist. We investigate the sense-making that scientists engage in as part of their participation in technology transfer and postulate that this process involves a potential modification in their role identity. We analyzed more than 70 h of interview data at a premier U.S. public research university. We observe that scientists invoke rationales for involvement that are congruent with their academic role identity. They typically adopt a hybrid role identity that comprises a focal academic self and a secondary commercial persona. We delineate two mechanisms – delegating and buffering – that these individuals deploy to facilitate such salience in their hybrid role identity. Overall, these patterns suggest that university scientists take active steps to preserve their academic role identity even as they participate in technology transfer. Our findings clarify the social psychological processes underlying scientist involvement in commercialization activity, and offer fresh insights to the academic entrepreneurship, science policy and role identity literatures.  相似文献

大学衍生企业作为科研成果商业化的主要途径,其成长性一直是国内外学术界研究的热点问题。本文基于角色认同视角,以203家中国大学衍生企业为研究样本,通过问卷调查并利用结构方程模型实证检验了学者创业角色、创业导向以及大学衍生企业创业绩效之间的关系,研究结果表明:(1)学者创业角色促进了衍生企业创业绩效的提升;(2)学者创业角色对创业导向产生了积极作用;(3)创业导向对学者创业角色与衍生企业创业绩效之间的关系具有部分中介作用。  相似文献

创业是企业发展的一种重要战略,以获取新技术、实现新业务创建为目的的创业导向并购逐渐成为了新创企业主要的战略实施方式。鉴于新创企业的发展具有技术依赖性,且董事会的构成较为特别,本文选取了2012年12月31日前在中国创业板上市的公司为研究对象,采集了截止到2015年12月的并购数据,通过回归分析,实证检验了不同技术轨道下新创企业董事会中创始人开放性和机构投资者参与对企业创业导向战略决策的影响。结果表明:在新创企业中,创始人开放性和机构投资者参与均能显著正向影响企业创业导向战略决策,且二者之间具有互补效应。进一步发现,企业所处的技术轨道不同,以上作用效果不同。在供应商主导和规模密集型企业中,创始人开放性与机构投资者参与的交互作用不显著;在信息密集型和专业化供应商企业中,创始人开放性与机构投资者参与具有显著的互补效应;在基于科学的企业中,机构投资者参与对企业的创业导向战略决策具有负向的影响。  相似文献

创业战略是新企业获取竞争优势的关键手段,现有研究对这一问题展开了初步探讨,但存在不足,仍需要进一步完善。一方面以新企业作为对象来剖析创业战略作用机理的研究缺乏;另一方面,转型情境的关注不足,即转型环境特征对创业战略的作用研究不足。以现有研究为基础,结合新企业特点和中国情境独特性,探讨投机导向、创业战略与新企业竞争优势之间的关系。通过对226家新企业的数据分析,实证结果表明:投机导向和创业战略对新企业竞争优势都会产生积极影响,并且产品创新战略和营销差异化战略在投机导向与竞争优势之间起到部分中介作用。研究成果进一步拓展了战略管理和创业研究领域,并为新企业发展提供了实践指导意见。  相似文献

Using data on the entire population of businesses registered in the states of California and Massachusetts between 1995 and 2011, we decompose the well-established gender gap in entrepreneurship. We show that female-led ventures are 63 percentage points less likely than male-led ventures to obtain external funding (i.e., venture capital). The most significant portion of the gap (65 percent) stems from gender differences in initial startup orientation, with women being less likely to found ventures that signal growth potential to external investors. However, the residual gap is as much as 35 percent and much of this disparity likely reflects investors’ gendered preferences. Consistent with theories of statistical discrimination, the residual gap diminishes significantly when stronger signals of growth are available to investors for comparable female- and male-led ventures or when focal investors appear to be more sophisticated. Finally, conditional on the reception of external funds (i.e., venture capital), women and men are equally likely to achieve exit outcomes, through IPOs or acquisitions.  相似文献

While postdoctoral fellowships are viewed as positions that prepare PhD students for academic careers, studies show that most postdocs will not find tenure-track employment within universities. Postdocs consequently pursue non-academic jobs that differ in the degree to which they utilize a postdoc’s scientific training, yet we know little about how this occurs. To help address this gap, this study inductively investigates factors that may influence a postdoc’s transition to a non-academic career. The study uncovers multiple individual, PI, as well as organizational and policy factors, including the lack of relevant skills, absence of support—and in some cases opposition—from their principal investigators, and poor availability of non-academic career preparation opportunities, among others. Viewed collectively, these elements likely hinder a move to non-academic scientific positions and thus have consequences for postdoc career trajectories and, by extension, the utilization of new knowledge. The paper opens the door for future research, theorization, and policy action that might smooth the transition of postdocs into non-academic careers and potentially improve the impact of publicly-funded research.  相似文献

Nascent academic entrepreneurs need to acquire entrepreneurial competencies to create successful spin-off ventures. In this article, we examine difficulties in this pursuit prior to venture formation and offer a systematic classification of inhibitors. We confirm, combine, and extend two previously identified inhibiting mechanisms into a relational inhibitor category, classify additional structural and cultural-cognitive inhibitors, and highlight how these inhibitors exist both at the individual and the organizational level. We then advance theoretical understanding of the interrelated, multilevel functions of inhibitors on the development of entrepreneurial competencies, and offer policy insights on how universities can mitigate their effects.  相似文献

This paper explores the geography of academic engagement patterns of native and foreign-born academics, contrasting how patterns of intranational and international engagement with non-academic actors differ between these two groups. We suggest that foreign-born academics will engage more internationally than their native-born colleagues, whereas native-born academics will have greater levels of intranational engagement. Drawing upon a large multi-source dataset, including a major new survey of all academics working in the UK, we find support for the idea that where people are born influences how they engage with non-academic actors. We also find that these differences are attenuated by an individual’s intranational and international experience, ethnicity and language skills. We explore the implications of these findings for policy to support intranational and international academic engagement.  相似文献

随着近年资源应用领域逐步向高新技术产业延伸,下游材料端的技术创新突破已成为重构中国资源产业优势的战略着力点。本文利用2008—2017年中国新材料企业面板数据,运用PVAR模型和脉冲响应函数,从技术生命周期视角探究了风险投资与政府补贴对中国新材料企业技术创新的激励效应及其差异性。研究表明:①对于新材料企业,风险投资和政府补贴通过提升企业研发投入进而促进了新材料企业的技术创新。其中,风险投资的激励效应更明显但具有短期性,政府补贴的激励效应则具有滞后性;②对于导入期新材料企业,风险投资对其技术创新的激励效应较小,而政府补贴正好弥补了市场资金配置的不足;对于成长期新材料企业,风险投资对其技术创新的长期激励效应强于政府补贴;对于成熟期新材料企业,政府补贴不能促进其技术创新,风险投资的激励效应则比较显著。因此,为更好地提升中国新材料技术创新水平,政府应引入分类补贴机制,重点向导入期新材料企业倾斜,并引导风险资本投入成长期和成熟期新材料企业。  相似文献
