In recent years, education and family policy in the UK has sought to incorporate the views of children and young people through an active participation agenda, in the fulfilment of children’s rights under the obligations of the UN Convention for the Rights of the Child. Drawing on empirical evidence, this paper suggests that this aspiration is flawed. The inclusion of young people’s voices in decision-making is context dependent, and influenced by individual relationships, both positive and negative. It is framed by policies that subjugate children within disciplinary technologies that determine a regime of ‘truth’ about effective and appropriate participation. Drawing on data gathered as part of a wider study on the relationships between services users and services providers in special educational needs, this paper demonstrates that active inclusion of the voice of the child can be illustrated to be at least variable, and at worst prejudiced. It is suggested that the notion of participation produces tacit forms of ‘government’ that further classify and divide young people, magnifying their marginalization.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to compare different types of materials that evoke memories in a sample of Polish seniors. We applied stimuli that referred to the period of reminiscence, that is, to the period between the ages of 10 and 30 in the lives of the investigated individuals. The sample consisted of 121 people between the ages of 65 and 96 years, living in Trójmiasto (the Tri-city), a metropolitan area in northern Poland. The participants were presented with photographs, fragments of popular songs and musical compositions, as well as excerpts from well-known Polish movies. We also applied a memory game as a procedure for stimulating memory in the elderly. The subjects were asked to evaluate the attractiveness of the presented materials on five-point rating scales. It turned out that all of the applied stimuli were assessed positively (the mean ratings were slightly above 4). The most highly valued group of stimuli was the one with musical material. We also observed differences in the evaluation of the applied materials between the group of “younger” seniors (<73 years) and “older” ones (>74 years). The memories evoked under the influence of contact with the presented materials were, in the vast majority of cases, very positive. The obtained data make it possible to infer that materials that evoke memories from the period of reminiscence can improve both the subjects’ memory functions, and their well-being.  相似文献

This study analyses what motivates older people to attend ‘day centres’ in Malta and what they believe that they derive from young people who carry out their placements at these day ‘centres’ These young people, who are aged 16–17, attend a vocational college in Malta and are studying health and social care. The study is based on a qualitative approach and employs the usage of focus groups. The main findings are that the elderly see the students as helping them on an emotional level by giving them encouragement, and on a practical level, by offering them insights that help them in modern-day life.  相似文献

This article moves from an overview of what is meant by the term ‘voice’ to discussing the significance of its links with action research. It does this through using a simple typology of three types of voice: Authoritative, Critical and Therapeutic. Each type of voice represents a different process of articulation and intended outcome. It then moves on to consider ‘voice’ and the collaboration of young people in educational action research by unpicking a series of four assumptions which delineate major theoretical and practical possibilities and limitations.
