俄文连续出版物联机编目规则在我国尚没有统一的标准,只有少数图书馆按照自定规则实现了俄文连续出版物的计算机管理。黑龙江大学图书馆在俄文图书联机编目实践成功后,又对俄文连续出版物联机编目工作进行了探索。针对著录内容的简化以及编号项和附注项、受控检索点、统一题名的著录等方面出现的普遍问题以及特殊出版物、连续出版物的出版变化和分类等方面的特殊问题,图书馆应统一俄文连续出版物数据库建设标准,进行俄文连续出版物编目工作的培训,指定专人定期维护已建成的数据库并做好编目人员队伍梯队建设。 相似文献

Some types of publication are viewed by librarians as serials and by publishers as monographs. In the pre-digital environment, cataloging rules and library workflows were developed to manage these publications. The shift to electronic publishing, distribution, and access brings new considerations into play. When the National Library of Medicine acquired a computer to augment its publication program, the intent was to present in one medium an index to journal articles and a catalog of books and new serial titles. The computer programs designed for indexing were unsatisfactory for cataloging, however; so two publications were issued, the Index Medicus and the NLM Current Catalog.The Current Catalog features separate name and subject sections, added volumes, and technical reports.The Express Cataloging Service was one of the first attempts to increase the speed and coverage of the Catalog. Shared cataloging with the Library of Congress, the Countway Library at Harvard, and the Upstate Medical Library in Syracuse, New York, have also contributed to the efforts toward improving this library service. An additional shared cataloging program, this time with the National Medical Audiovisual Center, is expected to be implemented shortly. 相似文献

A representative sample of 300 printed monographs and analyzed serials distributed to depository libraries was searched in the OCLC online system to determine when, how, and by whom depository documents are likely to be cataloged. Particular attention was paid to differences between dates of distribution and cataloging for sales publications, for all titles cataloged by the Government Printing Office, and for those cataloged by the Library of Congress. Patterns relating to document distribution as well as to cataloging practices were discernible from survey results and are presented here. Major findings may be summarized as follows: 1) not all depository monographs are cataloged by the Government Printing Office; 2) sales publications are cataloged quickly, often before distribution by GPO; 3) the quality of cataloging records for depository documents available on OCLC is generally high; 4) the Library of Congress catalogs relatively few depository documents and is comparatively slow to do so; and 5) many different types of OCLC member libraries catalog federal depository documents, often before GPO does. The article concludes with a discussion of implications for future changes in documents cataloging policies among depository libraries, and argues for greater inclusion of documents records in the many online, public-access catalogs currently being planned or used. 相似文献

In 1999, the University Library System at the University of Pittsburgh began a project to outsource cataloging for both the monographs and serials that were included in a special collection known at the university as the Glidden Collection. The collection had previously been accessible only through the existence of a card catalog. The materials had originally been cataloged using a local hybrid classification system based on the Glidden classification system. In her presentation, Faye Leibowitz provides detailed information about the history of the collection and why certain factors associated with the collection made it a difficult candidate for outsourcing. Libraries should seriously consider the hidden costs of outsourcing serials cataloging. The decision to outsource serials cataloging should take into account staffing problems and training. The way in which catalogers at the selected vendor use “cataloger's judgment” can also impact consistency between existing library policy and the outsourced records. 相似文献

Until the 2002 revision to AACR2 was adopted, cataloging rules for updating loose-leaf publications were orphans—they were excluded from previous Anglo–American rule compilations. To offer guidance to catalogers, over the years the Library of Congress issued a series of rule interpretations and supplemental resources outlining best practices and rules for cataloging loose-leafs. This article chronicles the publication, or lack of practical publication, of cataloging rules for updating loose-leafs and the impact on libraries. Also included is a review of the various organizations instrumental in garnering support for the creation and acceptance of a new paradigm and standards and concepts that would ensure the inclusion of cataloging rules for updating resources. Finally, the impacts on libraries and cooperative organizations resulting from the implementation of the new rules are examined. 相似文献

In June 1995, several librarians at the Fletcher Library of Arizona State University West resigned. The Library viewed this as an opportunity to examine the structure of the library and decided that the current contingent of librarians would assume the program responsibilities of the departing librarians on an interim basis. In addition to the author's regular responsibilities for serials acquisitions and serials management, she was given interim responsibility for management of the Journals/Microforms service programs and document delivery, as well as the supervision of the classified staff in that unit. She expected to draw upon her familiarity with serials and acquisitions, as well as previous supervisory experience, to maintain what is an important service point for the Library at ASU West. This paper will document the impact that decisions in serials acquisitions and control have on public service points and describe what impact this interim assignment in the public service sector will have on both the front-line and back-room operations at ASU West Library. 相似文献

The processing system used in the UCLA Biomedical Library is modest in size and still under development. Its origins date back to a batch mode serials control system begun in the mid-1960s. This was converted to an on-line system which currently has modules for check-in, updating and retrieval, claims, bindery preparation, and invoice information. Titles can be retrieved at the terminal by search of any word in the title, by subject heading, language, country of publication, and type of publication. The system is adaptable to network use and at present is shared with one other library. To the serials system has been added a computer-assisted cataloging and card production system. The latter utilizes serials nucleus software as well as design for data input and data storage. In-house listings and coding procedures overlap in a general way. Work is under way on further integration of the two processing subsystems and a feasibility study has been completed for addition of a subsystem for acquisitions which will combine and adapt features of the other two; for example, information retrieval characteristics from both, catalog coding and programs for acceptance of data, serials programs for claims, and other output programs. Summary The World Wide Web makes it possible for patrons to link easily to electronic journals but does not resolve problems of selection, acquisition, serials control, and cataloging. A pilot project undertaken at the University of Southern California Libraries involved creating a subject and title index to e-journals of interest to the USC faculty on the Web with links to the journals. Upon completion of the pilot, maintenance of the collection was assigned to the Serials Department in the University Library. An experiment in latest entry cataloging of selected serial title changes is currently being conducted at Northwestern University Library. The integrated structure of Northwestern's automated system NOTIS and its applications to serials processing were primary factors leading to the investigation of latest entry cataloging as an alternative to the current standard of successive entry cataloging for serial title changes. A systematic investigation was conducted through most of 1985 and allowed project staff to identify and evaluate a number of concerns and problems. The study team is encouraged with the results, but will continue gathering cataloging statistics and will conduct user studies before adopting latest entry cataloging as a permanent option. 相似文献

This article examines the writing of Thomas Mann, Reference Librarian at the Library of Congress, regarding the enduring value of traditional methods and tools of research libraries, particularly online public catalogs, professional cataloging, and Library of Congress Subject Headings and pre-coordinated subject strings. One major contention asserted by Mann is that keyword searching on the Internet, while very valuable when used judiciously, should not be used as a substitute for traditional catalogs and cataloging. The Portal to Texas History (http://texashistory.unt.edu) and the University of North Texas (UNT) Digital Library (http://digital.library.unt.edu) contain more than 445,000 items collectively, hosted by the UNT Libraries. These collections include a variety of serial publications such as newsletters, magazines, scholarly journals, annual reports, and yearbooks. Many of these serials are key resources for the user groups of both repositories. In the developing world, a common trend is to have north–south collaborations constituting most of the continuous professional development (CPD) activities for librarians. The emerging drift highlighted in this article is a north–south–south initiative aimed at rebuilding the University of Juba Library through capacity-building of the library staff. This article will illuminate the process of equipping library staff with cataloging skills in the absence of previous library training. This endeavor is a result of the collaborative efforts of Makerere University Library (MakLib) in Uganda and the University of Bergen Library (UoBL) in Norway under the Juba Library Automation Project (JULAP). JULAP's main objective is to rebuild the University of Juba Library with the components of library automation and training of library staff. This article will concentrate on the practical training of the library staff in cataloging and the hands-on training on the Koha integrated library system to lay the groundwork for computerized library services for the University of Juba.
