The major producers of technical reports are discussed and the many kinds of technical reports are explained. The elements of a typical citation for a technical report are listed, and the differences between report numbers, contract numbers, and accession numbers are articulated. A method of measuring a library's capability for providing the documents its users need has been developed. The library is tested with a representative sample of such documents to determine how long would be required for users to obtain these documents. Test results are expressed in terms of a Capability Index, which has a maximal value of 100 only if all the sample documents are found "on shelf." Specific tests employing samples of 300 documents have been developed that are appropriate for academic and for "reservoir" biomedical libraries. Realistic field trials have demonstrated that these two tests are practical to administer and that test results are adequately reproducible. When strict comparability is not important, a library can test itself. In assessing a reservoir library, test results are supplemented by data on its typical processing time for interlibrary loan requests. Currently these tests are being used in a national survey. The general method is applicable to other types of libraries, provided appropriate test samples are established. If their limitations are clearly understood, these "Document Delivery Tests" can be valuable tools for planning and managing library services. 相似文献

Union lists of serials are critical to the effective operation of interlibrary loan networks. The Michigan Health Sciences Libraries Association used the OCLC union list component to produce the Michigan Statewide Health Sciences Union List of Serials (MISHULS). MISHULS, which includes the serials holdings of ninety-three hospital health sciences libraries, is a subset of a statewide multi-type union list maintained on OCLC. The rationale for a statewide list and the criteria for choosing vendors are discussed. Typical costs are provided. Funding sources are identified and a unique approach to decentralized input is described. The benefits of resource sharing in a larger, multi-type library network are also explored. 相似文献

An important component of librarianship is the connection between a library and its community. Advisory committees or boards are a valuable tools for a leader to manage this connection and provides a leader with external expertise that can make a significant impact on a library community. However, advisory bodies need to be established for specific purposes and require a significant time commitment to ensure that members are contributing in a meaningful way. This article brings together results from a number of separate studies carried out in 2004 and 2005 analysing the results of user surveys in UK academic libraries. Results from four LibQUAL?+?? surveys and six surveys based on a template available from the Society of College, National and University Libraries are compared. Several common themes emerging from the analyses are examined, including differences in response rates and library behaviour between the various user groups, and the relative importance of a range of library services. Discrepancies between the responses of library staff and their users in areas such as the provision of information resources are noted. Associations between campus libraries and subject disciplines are likely to influence interpretation of survey results within institutions. There are similarities in the overall picture of user behaviour provided by both survey instruments. The implications for service development and delivery are discussed and a pilot benchmarking study reported. 相似文献

Methods of circulation control, using the Newark Charging System as a prototype, are reviewed. Two criteria for a charging system in a university and special library are that it must show both location and due date of materials taken out of the library. The Martland Hospital Medical Library has for more than a year been conducting a 16mm film program for interns, residents, attending physicians, and nurses as an adjunct to continuing education. It was possible to run this project on a minimal budget because many films are available at little or no cost from governmental agencies, pharmaceutical companies, medical associations, and universities. The program is run on a departmental basis. Films for a department are selected by the chief resident in that department from a list which the librarian has prepared of available films in the specialty involved. The library orders and publicizes the films and transacts all business in connection with them. Films pertinent to clinical practice are preferred. The administration of this program is described in this paper, and a number of film catalogs are evaluated. Criteria for film selection are discussed. 相似文献

[目的/意义]在引文分析中,可通过论文的一些属性特征对其未来的被引情况进行预测,并通过预测结果对论文、论文作者、作者所属机构及出版物做出评价。[方法/过程] 从出版物、作者和论文三个方面对影响论文被引的多个因素展开研究,以图书馆学情报学领域被SCI索引的论文作为分析及验证数据,使用逻辑回归、GBDT、XGBoost、AdaBoost、随机森林等算法进行预测,使用多组评测指标对比不同预测方法的效果,并使用GBDT识别对论文被引影响较大的因素。[结果/结论]确定三个方面的影响因素对论文被引预测的影响程度,构建预测模型,并较好地预测论文在未来一段时间的被引情况。大量实验分析发现GBDT、XGBoost和随机森林的预测能力较强,且预测的时间段越长,效果也就相对越好。 相似文献
