This paper describes information on the libraries of A.P. Volynskii and his adherents, which was gained from interactive sources and some printed publications. It reveals the disagreement in the data from the chronicle of the LAS and other information sources, as well as that between different printed and electronic sources. Web sites, electronic copies of books by S.A. Belokurov, D.A. Korsakov, and V.S. Ikonnikov, the fourth volume of Materials on the History of the Imperial Academy of Sciences, electronic documents, and indices of stocks for the Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts and the St. Petersburg Department of the Archive of the RAS were used as information sources from the Internet. F.I.L.L.S. is a library-specific software package developed by librarians for library staff with little or no computer experience. MacNeal Hospital's Health Science Resource Center designed F.I.L.L.S. to allow libraries to save 60 percent of the time devoted to the interlibrary loan function while improving service to users. As a management tool, F.I.L.L.S. creates a dozen (12) preprogrammed reports that provide invaluable information such as Number of Requests for Periodicals, including copyright information; which libraries are borrowed from frequently; and which libraries provide the fastest or slowest service in filling loan requests. The principles of J.S. Mill’s induction are formulated. These principles are developed and formalized for the five J.S. Mill’s inductive methods (the method of agreement, the method of difference, the joint method of agreement and difference, the method of residues, and the method of concomitant variations). The method of agreement, the method of difference, and the joint method of agreement and difference are considered in Part I. The possible strategies of plausible reasoning that realize the interaction of Mill’s induction, analogy, and abduction are formulated. Canada’s book trade is fascinating not only because it really consists of two book trades—the Anglophone and the Francophone—but also because it is a site of intense and sustained policy interventions designed to foster greater domestic control. Examining the country’s book policies, Statistics Canada data, trade association membership rosters and trade directories, this paper reveals that Canada’s contemporary book trade is characterized by three features: circa 40 years of government interventions in response to foreign dominance; the central role of foreign firms despite these interventions; and the dominance of Toronto and Montreal as domestic sites of book production.  相似文献

In this introductory article, we discuss the nature of Program Evaluation, describing the concepts that underlie our formal and informal evaluative efforts. Program Evaluation, like any deliberate inquiry process, is about learning. The process explicates program purposes, activities, and outcomes and generates knowledge about their merit and worth. This knowledge can inform planning and lead to program improvement. We present and discuss various definitions of Program Evaluation, focussing on its purposes and uses. We also provide an overview of the inquiry process, grounding the search for merit and worth in the American Evaluation Association's Guiding Principles for Evaluators. Because program evaluations are typically conducted to inform decision makers, we discuss aspects of professional practise that contribute to the use of an evaluation. The rhythm of publishers’ marketing efforts is dictated by an entirely outmoded historic model of publication of seasonal lists. Publishers should recognize that market conditions that drove this cycle are long gone and adjust to the realities of the 1990s. As a direct consequence of the digital revolution, academic libraries today face competition as information providers. Using Richard N. Foster's technology S curves as the analytical model, this article shows that academic libraries are in the midst of discontinuous change by questioning a number of assumptions that support the current practice of academic librarianship. This paper outlines the reasons that open access resources are required and the developmental patterns of open access models, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of open access information flows; it introduces a navigator that has been created as a tool for the use of open access resources. It also contains an analysis of statistical data about the use of this tool, including the results of surveys and interviews with the experts from one of the top research institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and presents the authors’ ideas about the role of libraries in the open access movement.  相似文献

Blackwell’s Approval Program Coverage and Cost Study details subject areas and list prices of monographs covered by our New Titles program for academic library collections. The Study reports on titles treated, not on copies sold—each title is counted once, whether it was purchased by one library or by hundreds. The Study presents information on numbers of titles treated and average list price, arranged by Blackwell’s subjects and then by LC class, for all publishers and then for university presses exclusively. It also includes a detailed report of all treated titles by NLM class. Additionally, the report includes a breakdown of the non-subject characteristics (e.g., language and format) of treated titles. Since most of Blackwell’s Approval libraries are not profiled to receive books for titles coded with the Non-Subject Parameters (NSPs) Popular works and Lower undergraduate texts, we exclude titles with these NSPs from the Coverage and Cost Study. The experience gained in the development of the system of simulation modeling of intelligent agent interaction (SMIAI) is described. It is based on the general model of agent interaction proposed by G.V. Rybina, who developed the works on intelligent dialog systems, including the well-known Popov’s communication model, in the late 1990s. The goal of SMIAI is to validate the applicability of the proposed models, methods, and algorithms of intelligent agent interactions and their architecture in developing MAS prototypes for different problem areas. The SMIAI architecture, support means for simulation experiments, transmission and processing of messages, and other components are considered. Realized MAS prototypes for several applications are presented as examples. The models of local, thematic, and global dialog structure for intelligent agents are presented and the problems of intelligent agent communications behavior formation are analyzed. The creation of the models under consideration by means of G2 and Microsoft Visual Studio is described.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to provide a reconnaissance of major academic libraries located in Australia, Canada, the U.K. and U.S.A. that have embraced Web 2.0 tools for enhancing library services. The research is based on a survey of websites of 277 university libraries. The checkpoints used for this evaluative study were given by Nguyen (2008) for evaluating various Web 2.0 tools. Additional checkpoints were arrived at after visiting and browsing the various sites. The findings of the study acknowledge the strength of Web 2.0 tools in improving library services for users. Really Simple Syndication (RSS), Instant Messaging (IM) and blogs are popular in academic libraries. The paper concludes by offering best practices for implementing Web 2.0 tools in academic libraries.  相似文献

This article describes new legislation designed to promote the provision of audiobooks in UK public libraries. Then based on contact with UK librarians, audio publishers and a sales representative from Overdrive, it makes some critical comments on speculation in the trade literature as to whether audiobooks will survive as a distinct entity or be subsumed into enhanced versions of ebooks. It also makes some comments on the recent dispute between visually impaired advocacy groups and the industry over the Kindle’s text-to-speech function.  相似文献

The U.S. Supreme Court’s 1991 decision in the Feist case wiped away the idea that “sweat of the brow” is adequate for a copyright claim. The paper analyzes best-seller lists in seven major European book markets between April 2008 and March 2009. The paper’s authors introduce the concept of an impact factor for best-selling authors that shows how influential an author is in a given market and across the analyzed markets overall. The paper’s authors discovered that a new generation of European best-selling authors appeared in major book markets of Europe such that those not writing in English have an impact of almost twice that of the English writers. Furthermore, the authors have discovered that only veteran English or American best-selling authors tend to be published by big media conglomerates; the majority of the European best-selling authors were published by a surprising mix of big and small, independent and international publishing houses. It is striking that English as the most popular second language in the world did not play a stronger role as an intermediary language in the transmission of books from one European culture to another, as European publishers in major markets still employ editors who read a variety of languages and thus play the role of intermediaries in how books travel from one culture to another.  相似文献

This paper provides a preliminary report of a 5-year study that looks at graduate students’ perceptions of the information professions, and examines if and how perceptions change as they progress through their program of study, as well as over the years. The survey population is made up of students in the three streams of study (archives, information systems, and library and information science) at the Faculty of Information Studies (FIS) at the University of Toronto. The data, gathered from three iterations of a self-administered questionnaire over one and a half years, includes demographic profiles, as well as students’ views on the social status of various professions, including archivists and records analysts. Also included are students’ views on how much computing knowledge is required, salary expectations, career prospects, expectations for career and personal achievements, and reasons for pursuing the master’s degree. We examine differences between students in different streams of study, and differences between groups of respondents surveyed at different points in time. We hope that our findings will help us improve recruitment of individuals into the information professions.  相似文献
