Summary

As law schools build interactive web sites for teaching and administrative functions, law libraries must continue to develop useful and resource-rich web sites of electronic materials for their patrons. This article examines issues and practical considerations for implementing Internet and CD-ROM resources in a library and provides a basic review of the media available. Suggestions for building an Internet or Intranet site are included as is an explanation of how to use database-driven tools to create an integrated environment.  相似文献

Abstract

While the need for a plan to evaluate distance library services is clear, the means by which this work should be done is less obvious. Faced with a variety of measurement tools, it can be difficult to decide not only what to evaluate but also how to do it. With the goal of providing information on how to develop appropriate assessment instruments to document performance and service quality, this paper gives an overview of the assessment movement. As a lens through which librarians, administrators, accrediting bodies and other stakeholders might view the effectiveness and value of distance library services, the Distance Learning Library Services (DLS) Guidelines serve as a framework that can be used to build an assessment strategy, as well as a gateway to other measurement tools and accreditation standards.  相似文献

Abstract

Between October 2003 and July 2004, the Statewide Virtual Reference Project (a Washington State Library initiative funded by LSTA) developed the Virtual Evaluation Toolkit, or VET. The purpose of VET was to help libraries improve virtual reference services, with resulting increased awareness, usage, and customer satisfaction. VET includes three levels of evaluation tools with information on their implementation and examples of the use of results, along with a generic final report based on three test site evaluations (an academic, public, and special library). The complete manual is available on the Web in order to provide practical and meaningful tools and recommendations that encourage libraries to use them and also to report on their use.  相似文献

Summary

Law librarians must develop a sixth sense to catch whispers in the wind and cultivate a sense of impending developments. Changes must be perceived before they happen. The increasing globalization in the law and the legal profession was perceived by the author in 1987 in New Zealand, and she details the steps taken to enable her to deal with them. These included working for a semester in an academic library in the United States, attendance at the Canadian Law Librarians Conference, and a locum as a law librarian in a Canadian law firm. The Northern American experience was invaluable in assisting the author in using the relevant legal sources and their tools that could then be applied back in New Zealand. The generic common law bond which binds these jurisdictions meant that developments in the one legal system could then be extrapolated back and related to the New Zealand situation. The author also provides hints to assist other law librarians seeking similar enrichment.  相似文献

Abstract

In an economic climate when colleges can no longer presume that legislators see institutions of higher learning as tacit public goods, institutions around the country are facing budget cuts. This article presents a case study of the experience of a mid-sized public state university and its Library in a budget crisis undergoing a university-wide program prioritization process. The authors review the process of writing three reports on the Library’s value, along with the approach to engaging staff in the process including a retreat. This article raises questions about what every library should consider assessing and provide tools for libraries navigating similar terrain.  相似文献

Abstract

Many of the processes for interlibrary loan are not unique to law firms, but may have unique applications given the substantially shorter deadlines and the possibility of allowing increased costs. Rapid borrowing of standard and obscure material-same day or next day deliv-ery-via interlibrary loan is considered standard. Within that environment, learning how to make tools which will work the first time can make the difference between meeting deadlines and failure. Discussion includes principles of interlibrary loan behind the immediate transaction, a discussion of applying “fair use” to a law firm context, the history and philosophy of interlibrary loan, and the nature of collaboration. Specific tools for interlibrary loan are discussed with an application to a law firm library context. Bibliographic utilities (like OCLC) and the use of lender Online Public Access Catalogs are discussed for maximizing the percentage of first attempt affirmative responses. The role of consortia and the use of online resources are discussed, with an eye towards licensing issues that can prevent lending libraries from providing information. Lending and borrowing policies are discussed with a focus on the nature of reciprocity. The positive and negative impact of using broadcast e-mails to identify and find resources is outlined. Request transmission protocols like the ALA form, OCLC and other methods of request transmission are discussed within the context of law firm interlibrary loan. Protocols for when transactions go awry are discussed. The role of continuing education is emphasized.  相似文献

State, public, academic, and special libraries are conducting and publishing the results of studies aimed at showing the value of their services and resources. Librarians must be prepared and proactive so when asked to justify budget allocations they have the tools to show their library's value and understand the importance of expressing value in terms familiar to the administrators. In these times of extraordinary development in information and communication technologies (ICT) many new tools and services, and traditional tools, such as the catalog, could be developed or enhanced by librarians to effectively support the academic community in teaching and learning. This paper will discuss how social interaction between technical and public service librarians could enhance library services to the academic faculty and students during these demanding times of technologies and information overload. The paper will also point out that the team approach to library services can improve social interaction between librarians when the perpetuation of the traditional academic organizational model is not efficient enough for the faculty and students' need-driven use of information. This case study presents the Liverpool experience of using social media as an academic library to enhance audience engagement and create a community of users. It looks at the development of social media in the library, focusing on the concerted effort to grow followers and develop a meaningful use of these tools. It considers the value of taking a team approach, ensuring a diversity and breadth of output. Using social media effectively enables libraries to connect with users in a space they already occupy and bring added value to existing activities. A strong, well maintained social media presence enhances a library's national and international profile and ensures good on campus relationships with main stakeholders. This case study demonstrates the relevance of social media as a communication channel and the importance of selecting the correct platform depending on audience or aims. ABSTRACT

This article discusses an experience of the University of Central Florida (UCF) Library when hosting a visiting librarian from Tongji University Library in Shanghai, China, in 2015. Unlike most other visiting programs in the U.S., UCF's hosting experience offers a year-long, broad-based training in several functional areas facilitated by library administration and two bilingual librarians. The initial goals were to promote dialogue and understanding between the academic systems of the two countries, and ultimately to enhance the international users' library experience in their quest to study at foreign institutions. Through describing this visiting program and discussing its findings and assessments, the authors concluded longer term visiting programs like this can benefit both the visiting and hosting libraries and bridge the gap of academic libraries across the world.  相似文献

Now, with a market share of more than 8 percent, Firefox is becoming more popular with library users and offers opportunity to increase access to library tools through browser plugins. This tutorial explains how to integrate the library catalog into the Firefox search bar. Step-by-step instructions are provided for interpreting your library catalog's URL structure, building an XML file that will control how the search box functions when your search is selected, creating an icon, and testing the new search tool.
