The Mark Twain Project Online (MTPO) was launched in October 2007 and, in this first phase, digitally published several thousand of Twain's letters, almost 100 facsimiles of original documents, and over 28,000 records of other correspondence. The partners involved in the building of MTPO – the Mark Twain Papers, the California Digital Library, and University of California Press – created the site on the premise that Web‐accessible versions of this content, enhanced by innovative design and site architecture and a suite of research tools, would greatly improve scholars' ability to discover and work with this unique material. Anecdotal feedback supports this premise. Early data analysis confirms the usefulness of facsimiles and browsing functionality. Users tend to prefer simple keyword over complex searches; however, those conducting advanced searches are using the tool flexibly, as we had hoped. Further analysis is expected to improve our understanding of how researchers use these tools in combination. 相似文献

Rapidly developing technology has changed the environment in libraries so that some degree of computer search ability is required now in order to give standard, non-obsolete reference service. New library school graduates regularly receive a basic understanding of DIALOG, BRS and other database utilities, but some feel more inclined toward working with computers than others. At the same time, seasoned librarians are faced with new learning requirements for computer searching. How do librarians in the "transition generation" handle the change required by professional technological development? A wide range of responses - from enthusiastic to reluctant - requires flexibility and variety in training and continuing education methods. This paper will address the human factor in some issues of broad technological change. The authors will offer some observations about how we as a profession are adapting to the new environment of computer-enhanced information. In August of 1989, the Library of Congress selected fourteen libraries nationwide to participate in a pilot project to test and determine the feasibility and desirability of remote online access to the Library's information system. The California State Library was selected as one of the participant libraries. During the project, State Library staff performed 187 subject searches on various topics in the Library of Congress Information System (LOCIS). LOCIS was easy to search, and contained a variety of useful search features. Overall, staff found access to LOCIS to be a valuable addition to our existing online search services. 相似文献

This study employed a sequential, mixed-method confirmatory research design to assess the impact of the delivery of library staff asynchronous online training at four levels of instructional intervention and workplace integration on short- and long-term knowledge acquisition/retention, self-efficacy, and job performance. The study utilized a pretest, posttest, and delayed posttest design with 192 staff members from twenty-seven public libraries in the United States completing all phases of the four-month longitudinal study. The study proposed an evidence-based, comparative evaluation framework to discern effectiveness of competency-based online training and the impact of varying online training implementation practices. The study found that all levels of instructional intervention resulted in significant short-term knowledge acquisition and enhancement of self-efficacy, and the three approaches that utilized facilitation resulted in long-term knowledge acquisition and improvement in self-efficacy. The impact on long-term workplace practices resulted in unique findings for small and large libraries. The researchers recommend further research in online training evaluation and best practices in public library online training. 相似文献
