ABSTRACT Today's sophisticated circulation services and circulation policies, together with the ease of disseminating data in the Information Era, pose challenges to libraries. Library users are expected to be informed in advance of the policies they are supposed to observe when using the circulation services, instead of being told after the occurrence of an incident that they have not followed the policies and thus need to bear the consequences. User education can no longer be restricted to bibliographic instruction in its traditional sense but should cover circulation policies as well. User education on circulation policies needs to be concerted, well planned, and innovative. Some approaches to user education on circulation policies are discussed. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Nearly all academic libraries keep circulation statistics which are often shared with their parent university, library consortia, and national organizations. This study attempted to discover what goes into circulation statistics by surveying Southeastern research libraries. Libraries were asked what they count in their circulation statistics and what their circulation policies are to identify differences across libraries. This article raises the question of whether press readers are ad- lovers or ad-averse. If readers are ad-lovers, a positive circulation spiral should be expected, through mutual reinforcement between circulation and advertising. On the contrary, advertising aversion may eventually lead to a decrease in circulation when newspapers' advertising space increases. The empirical section of the article concludes that attitudes toward press advertising are country specific. The theoretical section develops some implication of advertising aversion hypothesis. 相似文献

The data for the study are based on the circulation history of the unique copy of selected humanities monograph titles obtained from The Ohio State University. Tests of the time independence of the circulation data revealed a time dependence in 13 of the 14 data sets. Tests of the Markovity of the circulation data where second order Markovity is assumed and first order Markovity is tested revealed 11 of the 14 data groups to be without Markovity. It appears from this study that direct tests of the Markovity of library circulation data should be conducted before models based on the assumption of Markovity are used. 相似文献

Numerous publications on patron-driven acquisition (PDA) for print books and similar materials have reported that patron-requested materials circulate more. Tying circulation to selector may be failing to address the complex of factors that contributes to items' circulation. In the present study, the authors revisit a PDA program's data and to determine whether PDA print books' circulation advantage persists when the potential interactions of several additional variables are taken into account. As with prior studies, library patrons were significantly better predictors of circulation than were librarians or approval plans. However, librarians proved to be significantly better predictors than were approval plans. 相似文献
