ABSTRACT This case study of a quarter-long collaborative service-learning project, repeated over several quarters, involves technical communication students and librarians at Eastern Washington University. The librarians needed to promote RefWorks, while the technical communication faculty needed a client with a computer-based tool for students to learn and then teach to others. Working in teams, fifty-eight students planned and executed fifteen RefWorks workshops for students. The majority of students liked using RefWorks and gave successful presentations to their peers. This project increased awareness and usage of RefWorks while also affording librarians a student-centered perspective on teaching and using this tool. In this win–win collaboration, students learned useful skills in addition to developing a sense of community with the library. 相似文献

ABSTRACT This article explores the multistate, family literacy program, PRIME TIME FAMILY READING TIME. This program brings to public libraries parents with low income and/or with beginning English literacy skills and along with their children aged 6–10 who are at risk for low reading ability. PRIME TIME uses humanities scholars and discussion facilitators to lead discussions that center on eliciting values from stories that have applications in daily life. Relevance feedback is an effective technique for improving search accuracy in interactive information retrieval. In this paper, we study an interesting optimization problem in interactive feedback that aims at optimizing the tradeoff between presenting search results with the highest immediate utility to a user (but not necessarily most useful for collecting feedback information) and presenting search results with the best potential for collecting useful feedback information (but not necessarily the most useful documents from a user’s perspective). Optimizing such an exploration–exploitation tradeoff is key to the optimization of the overall utility of relevance feedback to a user in the entire session of relevance feedback. We formally frame this tradeoff as a problem of optimizing the diversification of search results since relevance judgments on more diversified results have been shown to be more useful for relevance feedback. We propose a machine learning approach to adaptively optimizing the diversification of search results for each query so as to optimize the overall utility in an entire session. Experiment results on three representative retrieval test collections show that the proposed learning approach can effectively optimize the exploration–exploitation tradeoff and outperforms the traditional relevance feedback approach which only does exploitation without exploration. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate communication motives using attachment theory in father–daughter relationships. Two hundred and seven father–daughter dyads participated in the study. Results revealed that attachment styles were similar for all communication motives, except for the motive of escape. Dyads with secure attachment styles were more likely than anxious/ambivalent attachment styles to communicate for escape. Results also indicated that attachment styles did not influence fathers' communication motives. In other words, fathers communicated with their daughters regardless of how daughters' attach themselves to their fathers. These findings contribute to the understanding of the relationship between attachment styles and communication motives in father–daughter interpersonal relationships. 相似文献

ABSTRACT I visited Albania from September 6 to 12, 2004 as a guest speaker of the U.S. Department of State. I gave three lectures on library use of information technology and on information resources–two at the National Library of Albania and one at the House of the Book and Communication. The lectures were in English, but the accompanying PowerPoint presentations had captions in Albanian. The 40 participants from several libraries across Albania and Kosovo knew English but were given Albanian translations as well of my lectures. I also visited the municipal library in Vlora. SUMMARY Jewish periodicals have been published in Ukraine, in Russian and Ukrainian, over a 140-year time span. They are systematically described here, starting with the first such journal, Razsviet (Rassvet; Odessa, 1860–61), with accompanying bibliographical analysis. The central part of the article is a table noting all 311 periodicals' characteristics, including titles, cities and dates of publication, main features, and/or subtitles. Their stages of development, regional distribution, and languages of publication are reviewed. It is noteworthy that at the end of 2000, close to 100 Jewish newspapers, magazines, almanacs, and bulletins were active in the republic. Australia has a well-established history of access to government information and publications by citizens, much of it through libraries. The changes in the 1990s and 2000s with the move to electronic publishing and Internet access have led to significant changes in the accessibility of information. In 1997, the Australian Government framework for electronic delivery of information service was established by the report Management of Government Information as a National Strategic Resource. Since this report, there has been a rapid increase in the availability of government information, including government publications. There has also been an increased demand for public libraries to support access. The paper reviews establishment of the initial framework and changes in the past decade. Trends in production of government information, citizens' use of electronic Australian Government publications, satisfaction with online government services, and implications for libraries are analyzed. 相似文献

The present paper argues that audience reception studies have tended to be ahistorical, neglecting consideration of the ways in which audiences’ orientation to media may have changed over the decades. The paper explores the potential of combining oral history methods with reception studies, and addresses some of the difficulties which arise. An apparently simple way to introduce a historical perspective is attempted by including audience age as a central part of an empirical research design. By analysing a series of focus group discussions in which people respond to crime media from different points over the postwar period, the concept of age is unpacked in terms of generation and life course factors, and these are shown to influence reception of crime media from both the present and the past. Generation and life course, together with gender, also affect people's positioning in society in relation to real‐world crime, and this too affects the reception of crime media. The paper concludes by suggesting three ways in which audiences may have changed over the postwar period in terms of their interpretive frames for making sense of crime media, namely the frames of personal relevance, realism and moral relativism. 相似文献
