This article describes the development of the Bulgarian collection at the Library of Congress from its beginnings in the late nineteenth century to the present. It covers international exchanges, approval plans, special purchases, and federal library transfers. In addition to the chronological narrative, there are separate sections for the newspaper, rare book, and émigré collections. The need for information literacy continues to increase as colleges and universities begin to globalize their curricula and include global readiness in institutional missions. This article reports pretest and posttest data collected during a librarian–faculty collaboration to determine the effect of information literacy instruction on students participating in an anthropology class focused on global understanding. The results suggest emphasis on teaching specific skills can produce an increase in students’ information literacy levels. Also, emerging global curricula may provide an avenue for librarians to pursue the promotion of information literacy. AbstractThis research project explores how to ethically, efficiently, and accurately add demographic terms for African American authors to catalog records. A Department of History graduate student located evidence of self-identification as African American for authors, and catalogers added the demographic term to bibliographic records and are in the process of creating work level Name Title Authority Records for titles written by those authors. A healthy civil society has long been held as vital to a healthy democracy and there is interest in whether the Internet affects this linkage. This paper explores the relationships between offline and online modes of associational life and also analyzes offline and online interactions with local governments in the US context. Based on our empirical analyses of 1,203 respondents, we show that online participation is not simply an extension of offline participation, but can be distinguished in important ways. First, we find that political and community-oriented engagements cluster separately from more private-regarding engagements. Second, participants of online democratic engagement are not characterized by the SES markers associated with offline democratic engagement who are older, have higher incomes, and have lived in the community longer. Finally, we find significant links between democratic engagement with the political system and involvement with political associations (but not social and community-oriented associations). 相似文献

This article examines the modularisation movement in higher education in the light of a comparative study of recent experience at the universities of Ghana and Bristol. Particular attention is given to an identification of motivating factors, both internal and external, and to an analysis of similarities and differences in the implementation of the modularisation process. the idea that academics have a firm and fixed disciplinary identity from which they then act and suggests that academic work
in the contemporary university challenges and changes how individuals view their disciplinary affiliation. The article provides
empirical data that lends weight to critical questioning of anthropological metaphors, which have tended to dominate discussions
of disciplinarity. It suggests that contemporary understandings of disciplinary and interdisciplinary identity need more fluid
metaphors and models; ones that can capture the shifting and questioning uncertainties that give expression to the rhetorical
and reflexive nature of academics’ disciplinary affiliations. The article explores the implications of a dominant emphasis

SUMMARY This article examines the use of text conferencing by student teachers at the University of Ulster. An asynchronous facility was utilised through the Northern Ireland Network for Education (NINE) website in order to reduce student isolation while on teaching practice, and to provide a real context in which students could enhance their ICT skills. The key factors influencing the nature of conferencing were identified and explored, principally, the extent of student and tutor involvement, and the availability of a link to conferencing systems in schools. Conferencing was most valued by students for reducing the sense of isolation on teaching practice. The results show that conferencing serves purposes that not only include but exceed the initial aims, and that it has become a tangible asset to the Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). 相似文献

This study aimed to examine player perceptions and biomechanical responses to tennis surfaces and to evaluate the influence of prior clay court experience. Two groups with different clay experiences (experience group, n = 5 and low-experience group, n = 5) performed a 180° turning movement. Three-dimensional ankle and knee movements (50 Hz), plantar pressure of the turning step (100 Hz) and perception data (visual analogue scale questionnaire) were collected for two tennis courts (acrylic and clay). Greater initial knee flexion (acrylic 20. 8 ± 11.2° and clay 32.5 ± 9.4°) and a more upright position were reported on the clay compared to the acrylic court (P < 0.05). This suggests adaptations to increase player stability on clay. Greater hallux pressures and lower midfoot pressures were observed on the clay court, allowing for sliding whilst providing grip at the forefoot. Players with prior clay court experience exhibited later peak knee flexion compared to those with low experience. All participants perceived the differences in surface properties between courts and thus responded appropriately to these differences. The level of previous clay court experience did not influence players’ perceptions of the surfaces; however, those with greater clay court experience may reduce injury risk as a result of reduced loading through later peak knee flexion. 相似文献
