Speed of technology modernization at the workplace has brought a need for opportunities for professional development for those at work. Distance education in engineering provides a viable alternative to meet this learner need. In concrete terms, this calls for employment‐related, flexible programme structures, where course content design, self‐instructional material preparation and student support services for course delivery are planned and implemented in a collaborative endeavour between distance teaching institutions, conventional, academic institutions and industry. While detailing the distance education programmes in science, computer applications and nursing education at the Indira Gandhi National Open University, India, the paper presents the above networking approach to the design and implementation of flexible programme structures as developed by IGNOU in implementing its engineering programmes. 相似文献

Endothelial dysfunction is an imbalance in the production of vasodilator factors and when this balance is disrupted, it predisposes the vasculature towards pro-thrombotic and pro-atherogenic effects. This results in vasoconstriction, leukocyte adherence, platelet activation, mitogenesis, pro-oxidation, impaired coagulation and nitric oxide production, vascular inflammation, atherosclerosis and thrombosis. Endothelial dysfunction is focussed as it is a potential contributor to the pathogenesis of vascular disease in diabetes mellitus. Under physiological conditions, there is a balanced release of endothelial-derived relaxing and contracting factors, but this delicate balance is altered in diabetes mellitus and atherosclerosis, thereby contributing to further progression of vascular and end-organ damage. This review focuses on endothelial dysfunction in atherosclerosis, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, oxidative stress associated with diabetes mellitus, markers and genetics that are implicated in endothelial dysfunction. 相似文献

Phototherapy has been related to increased oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation. In the present study, thirty full term
jaundiced neonates with appropriate weight were analyzed before and after completion of phototherapy for malondialdehyde (MDA),
reduced glutathione (GSH), total thiols, vitamin C and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels in hemolysate and albumin levels
in plasma. These parameters were analyzed in cord blood samples of 20 healthy neonates as control. It was observed that levels
of MDA were elevated significantly (p<0.001) in patients as compared to controls and that the levels increased significantly
after phototherapy (p<0.001). Levels of SOD were also found to be increased significantly as compared to controls and the
levels rose after phototherapy (p<0.001). On the other hand, the levels of non-enzymatic antioxidants such as GSH, total thiols
and vitamin C were significantly low (p<0.001) as compared to controls and the levels decreased significantly after phototherapy
(p<0.001). The plasma albumin levels also were found to be decreased significantly after phototherapy (p<0.01). Therefore,
phototherapy increases oxidative stress and should be used with care. 相似文献

Musa cavendish, peels has local and traditional use to promote wound healing, hyperglycemia, ulceration etc. The present work investigated the lipid lowering; nephroprotective and glucose lowering properties of ethanolic extract of peels of Musa cavendish (EMC) in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. The EMC 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg/day and the vehicle were administered orally to alloxan-induced diabetic rats (n = 6) for 3 weeks. Changes in plasma glucose, lipid profile along with kidney function before and after treatment with EMC were recorded. The ethanolic extract of peels of Musa cavendish reduced blood glucose, serum triglyceride, cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and creatinine levels and improvement in body weight, liver glycogen, serum HDL cholesterol, serum albumin and total protein level when compared with untreated rats. Musa cavendish has lipid lowering, nephroprotective and antidiabetic property by regulating glucose uptake in the liver and muscles by restoring the intracellular energy balance. 相似文献

Hemoglobin Q- India (alpha) 64 Asp → His is an alpha chain variant which is generally found in heterozygous state and presents
normal hematological blood picture. Here we report a rare case of HbQ-India with a thalassemic phenotype that has been analyzed
using a combination of mass spectrometry, gene sequencing and PCR analysis. This combined analyses revealed the HbQ variant
to be associated with a beta chain mutation, IVS 1-1 [G>T]. Though HbQ has earlier been reported with thalassemic trait using
different techniques, this is the first report of a compound α and β chain Hb heterozygous mutant involving HbQ and IVS1-1

Network coding is a technique to increase the amount of information flow in a network by making the key observation that information
flow is fundamentally different from commodity flow. Whereas, under traditional methods of operation of data networks, intermediate
nodes are restricted to simply forwarding their incoming message symbols downstream, network coding achieves vast performance
gains by permitting intermediate nodes to carry out algebraic operations on the incoming data. In this article we present
a tutorial introduction to network coding as well as an application to the efficient operation of distributed data-storage
