Spatial ability (SA) is the cognitive capacity to understand and mentally manipulate concepts of objects, remembering relationships among their parts and those of their surroundings. Spatial ability provides a learning advantage in science and may be useful in anatomy and technical skills in health care. This study aimed to assess the relationship between SA and anatomy scores in first- and second-year medical students. The training sessions focused on the analysis of the spatial component of objects' structure and their interaction as applied to medicine; SA was tested using the Visualization of Rotation (ROT) test. The intervention group (n = 29) received training and their pre- and post-training scores for the SA tests were compared to a control group (n = 75). Both groups improved their mean scores in the follow-up SA test (P < 0.010). There was no significant difference in SA scores between the groups for either SA test (P = 0.31, P = 0.90). The SA scores for female students were significantly lower than for male students, both at baseline and follow-up (P < 0.010). Anatomy training and assessment were administered by the anatomy department of the medical school, and examination scores were not significantly different between the two groups post-intervention (P = 0.33). However, participants with scores in the bottom quartile for SA performed worse in the anatomy questions (P < 0.001). Spatial awareness training did not improve SA or anatomy scores; however, SA may identify students who may benefit from additional academic support. 相似文献

Despite the widespread use of school‐based abuse prevention programs, few studies support their effectiveness in helping children avoid victimization. Most studies that evaluate prevention programs measure changes in children's knowledge and not subsequent behavior. Further, the link between knowledge, behavior, and the ability to avoid or reduce victimization has not been established. In this study the impact of a school‐based prevention program was assessed by surveying students at a high school in southern California where students from feeder elementary and junior high schools were known to have had abuse prevention programs available to them. Data were collected anonymously on 137 high school students during their Health class. A quasi‐experimental design was utilized, comparing the 72 students who had attended one or more school‐based abuse prevention program with the 65 who stated they had not participated in a prevention program. Demographic similarities between the two groups were established. Students who attended prevention programs were more knowledgeable about abuse concepts and reported fewer incidents of abuse. However, the effectiveness of students' responses to abuse, even when they were using strategies taught by the prevention programs, was variable. Dielectrophoretic properties of DNA have been determined by measuring capacitance changes between planar microelectrodes. DNA sizes ranged from 100 bp to 48 kbp, DNA concentrations from below 0.1 to 70 μg∕ml. Dielectrophoretic spectra exhibited maximum response around 3 kHz and 3 MHz. The strongest response was found for very long DNA (above 10 kbp) and for short 100 bp fragments, which corresponds to the persistence length of DNA. The method allows for an uncomplicated, automatic acquisition of the dielectrophoretic properties of submicroscopical objects without the need for labeling protocols or optical accessibility. 相似文献

Although sport management researchers have produced findings with regard to diversity in the leadership positions of college athletics, this examination has focused separately on gender (Inglis et al., 1996, Inglis et al., 2000; Inglis, Danylchuk, & Pastore, 2000; Knoppers et al., 1991, National Collegiate Athletic Association, 2009a, Sartore and Cunningham, 2007) or race (Cunningham and Sagas, 2004a, Cunningham and Sagas, 2004b, Cunningham et al., 2001, Cunningham et al., 2006). The current study, framed by intersectionality, identifies barriers contributing to the under-representation of Black women in head coaching jobs in Division I women's basketball in the United States. The assistant coaches cited access discrimination, lack of support, and prevalent stereotypes as barriers. In negotiating these barriers, the women discussed the importance of networking, mentoring and presenting “a proper image” for big-time athletics. To eradicate these barriers, the women recommended expanding job pools; more mentoring by athletic department personnel; and more development programs offered for young Black females. 相似文献

The present study was conducted to investigate the oxidant–antioxidant status in iron deficient pregnant anemic women. One
hundred thirty pregnant women with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) were divided into three groups, namely mild (50), moderate
(50) and severe (30) anemic along with pregnant healthy women as controls (50). The complete blood count, plasma lipid peroxidation
products, enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants were measured according to respective protocols. The levels of complete
blood count, iron, ferritin along with antioxidant enzymes namely catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase,
glutathione reductase and reduced glutathione were significantly reduced in all IDA groups. However, the level of oxidized
glutathione, lipid peroxides, protein carbonyls, conjugated dienes were found significantly increased in all anemic patients.
Antioxidant vitamins, namely C, E and A were also found significantly decreased in IDA patients. On the basis of our results,
it may be concluded that IDA tends to increase the pro-oxidant components, which may result in various complications including
peroxidation of vital body molecules resulting in increased risk for pregnant women as well as fetus. 相似文献

Synchronous collaborative information retrieval (SCIR) is concerned with supporting two or more users who search together at the same time in order to satisfy a shared information need. SCIR systems represent a paradigmatic shift in the way we view information retrieval, moving from an individual to a group process and as such the development of novel IR techniques is needed to support this. In this article we present what we believe are two key concepts for the development of effective SCIR namely division of labour (DoL) and sharing of knowledge (SoK). Together these concepts enable coordinated SCIR such that redundancy across group members is reduced whilst enabling each group member to benefit from the discoveries of their collaborators. In this article we outline techniques from state-of-the-art SCIR systems which support these two concepts, primarily through the provision of awareness widgets. We then outline some of our own work into system-mediated techniques for division of labour and sharing of knowledge in SCIR. Finally we conclude with a discussion on some possible future trends for these two coordination techniques. 相似文献

The antioxidants are essential molecules in human system but are not miracle molecules. They are neither performance enhancers
nor can prevent or cure diseases when taken in excess. Their supplemental value is debateable. In fact, many high quality
clinical trials on antioxidant supplement have shown no effect or adverse outcomes ranging from morbidity to all cause mortality.
Several Chochrane Meta-analysis and Markov Model techniques, which are presently best available statistical models to derive
conclusive answers for comparing large number of trials, support these claims. Nevertheless none of these statistical techniques
are flawless. Hence, more efforts are needed to develop perfect statistical model to analyze the pooled data and further double
blind, placebo controlled interventional clinical trials, which are gold standard, should be implicitly conducted to get explicit
answers. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase and catalase are termed as primary antioxidants as these scavenge
superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide. All these three enzymes are inducible enzymes, thereby inherently meaning that body
increases or decreases their activity as per requirement. Hence there is no need to attempt to manipulate their activity nor
have such efforts been clinically useful. SOD administration has been tried in some conditions especially in cancer and myocardial
infarction but has largely failed, probably because SOD is a large molecule and can not cross cell membrane. The dietary antioxidants,
including nutrient antioxidants are chain breaking antioxidants and in tandem with enzyme antioxidants temper the reactive
oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) within physiological limits. Since body is able to regulate its own
requirements of enzyme antioxidants, the diet must provide adequate quantity of non-enzymic antioxidants to meet the normal
requirements and provide protection in exigent condition. So far, there is no evidence that human tissues ever experience
the torrent of reactive species and that in chronic conditions with mildly enhanced generation of reactive species, the body
can meet them squarely if antioxidants defense system in tissues is biochemically optimized. We are not yet certain about
optimal levels of antioxidants in tissues. Two ways have been used to assess them: first by dietary intake and second by measuring
plasma levels. Lately determination of plasma/serum level of antioxidants is considered better index for diagnostic and prognostic
purposes. The recommended levels for vitamin A, E and C and beta carotene are 2.2–2.8 μmol/l; 27.5–30 μmol/l; 40–50 μmol/l
and 0.4–0.5 μmol/l, respectively. The requirement and recommended blood levels of other dietary antioxidants are not established.
The resolved issues are (1) essential to scavenge excess of radical species (2) participants in redox homeostasis (3) selective
antioxidants activity against radical species (4) there is no universal antioxidant and 5) therapeutic value in case of deficiency.
The overarching issues are (1) therapeutic value as adjuvant therapy in management of diseases (2) supplemental value in developing
population (3) selective interactivity of antioxidant in different tissues and on different substrates (4) quantitative contribution
in redox balance (5) mechanisms of adverse action on excess supplementation (6) advantages and disadvantages of prooxidant
behavior of antioxidants (7) behavior in cohorts with polymorphic differences (8) interaction and intervention in radiotherapy,
diabetes and diabetic complications and cardiovascular diseases (9) preventive behavior in neurological disorders (10) benefits
of non-nutrient dietary antioxidants (11) markers to assess optimized antioxidants status (12) assessment of benefits of supplementation
in alcoholics and heavy smokers. The unresolved and intriguing issues are (1) many compounds such as vitamin A and many others
possessing both antioxidant and non-antioxidant properties contribute to both the activities in vivo or exclusively only to
non-antioxidant activity and (2) since human tissues do not experience the surge of FR, whether there is any need to develop

Andean Indians have used coca leaves (Erythroxylon coca and related species) for centuries to enhance physical performance. The benefits and disadvantages of using coca leaf have
been a subject of many political debates. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of chewing coca leaves on biochemical
and physiological parameters. Cutaneous microdialysis catheters were used to estimate systemic biochemical changes. We subjected
10 healthy adult males (local residents) in Cajamarca (Peru, altitude 2700 m) to a standardised exercise routine on a stationary
cycle ergometer. The blood pressure, oxygen saturation (digital), pulse, VO2 max and ECG (Holter monitor) were recorded before
the exercise. Cutaneous microdialysis catheters were introduced in the forearm. The subjects were given to chew 8 g of coca
leaves with a small amount of lime. They were then placed on the cycle ergometer for 20 min. Blood pressure, oxygen saturation,
pulse, ECG and VO2 max were recorded. Pyruvate, glucose, lactate, glycerol and glutamate levels were estimated. Oxygen saturation,
blood pressure, and pulse rate did not show any significant changes between the two groups. Glucose levels showed hyperglycaemic
response. Glycerol, Lactate and Pyruvate increased. Glutamate remained unchanged. Similar changes were not seen in the controls.
These results suggest that coca leaves have blocked the glycolytic pathway of glucose oxidation resulting in accumulation
of glucose and pyruvate. The energy requirement for exercise is being met with beta-oxidation of fatty acids. The glycerol
released was also getting accumulated since its pathway for oxidation was blocked. These experimental findings suggest that
chewing coca leaves is beneficial during exercise and that the effects are felt over a prolonged period of sustained physical

Time-in and time-out were used to treat inappropriate and noncompliant behaviors in a child with severe language disabilities and a child with a moderate mental disability and cerebral palsy. The target behaviors for Jeremy were compliance with first-time presented teacher instructions, elopement and aggression. Prior to intervention, archival baseline data for Jeremy suggested a compliance rate with teacher directives of approximately 9% and a high frequency of elopement and aggression. Following implementation of a compliance training package, compliance to teacher directives increased to 97% within the first week of intervention and minimal instances of elopement and aggression. Two, 24, and 40-week follow-up compliance checks yielded mean rates of 98%, 99%, and 98% respectively and no elopement or aggression. Reduction in object tossing behaviors was targeted for Jenny. Archival baseline, indicated through parent report, suggested tossing rates of 80% of the times objects were in hand. Frequency of object tossing behavior decreased to a near-zero level during intervention. The use of this intervention package with children in an effort to deter future chronic noncompliance and inappropriate behavior is discussed. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 相似文献
