The purpose of this study was to understand the impact of an apprenticeship program on high school students’ understanding
of the nature of scientific inquiry. Data related to seventeen students’ understanding of science and scientific inquiry were
collected through open-ended questionnaires. Findings suggest that although engagement in authentic scientific research helped
the participants to develop competency in experimentation methods it had limited impact on participants’ learning of the implicit
aspects of scientific inquiry and NOS. Discussion focuses on the importance of making the implicit assumptions of science
explicit to the students in such authentic scientific inquiry settings through structured curriculum. 相似文献

A numerical method for solving the higher order linear difference equations with variable coefficients and mixed argument under the mixed conditions is presented. The method is based on the hybrid Legendre and Taylor polynomials. The solution is obtained in terms of Legendre polynomials. We investigate the structure of codes over Galois rings with respect to the Rosenbloom-Tsfasman (shortly RT) metric. We define a standard form generator matrix and show how we can determine the minimum distance of a code by taking advantage of its standard form. We compute the RT-weights of a linear code given with a generator matrix in standard form. We define maximum distance rank (shortly MDR) codes with respect to this metric and give the weights of the codewords of an MDR code. IntroductionTo interpret test results correctly, understanding of the variations that affect test results is essential. The aim of this study is: 1) to evaluate the clinicians’ knowledge and opinion concerning biological variation (BV), and 2) to investigate if clinicians use BV in the interpretation of test results.Materials and methodsThis study uses a questionnaire comprising open-ended and close-ended questions. Questions were selected from the real-life numerical examples of interpretation of test results, the knowledge about main sources of variations in laboratories and the opinion of clinicians on BV. A total of 399 clinicians were interviewed, and the answers were evaluated using a scoring system ranked from A (clinician has the highest level of knowledge and the ability of using BV data) to D (clinician has no knowledge about variations in laboratory). The results were presented as number (N) and percentage (%).ResultsAltogether, 60.4% of clinicians have knowledge of pre-analytical and analytical variations; but only 3.5% of them have knowledge related to BV. The number of clinicians using BV data or reference change value (RCV) to interpret measurements results was zero, while 79.4% of clinicians accepted that the difference between two measurements results located within the reference interval may be significant.ConclusionsClinicians do not use BV data or tools derived from BV such as RCV to interpret test results. It is recommended that BV should be included in the medical school curriculum, and clinicians should be encouraged to use BV data for safe and valid interpretation of test results. 相似文献

Assessment is a critical component of educational practices and thus impacts educational reform efforts. This article reviews and considers assessment from 2 perspectives: a focus on accountability and a focus on continuous improvement. A class of preservice and practicing science teachers explored notions of assessment while experiencing peer assessment as part of the class. Their online conversations about the processes of establishing quality criteria for peer assessment and their reflections on the experiences compose the primary data source. Two purposes for assessment, accountability and continuous improvement, arose from the data and created conflicts within the individuals and the class. To resolve this conflict, we propose a framework for viewing assessment as part of an integral model (Wilber, 2004) that includes and transcends the dualities. 相似文献

This article aims to provide an overall picture of the use of Twitter as a significant social media tool by mayors in Turkey and to investigate, using content analysis and tweet categorization, whether Twitter is used by mayors in Turkey to offer better public services. Thus, this study focuses on the impact of Twitter in Turkey on transparent, participatory and citizen-oriented local public services. Our analysis has revealed that mayors in Turkey use Twitter especially to share information, send personal messages and share their location and activities. The use of Twitter for transparent, participatory and citizen-oriented public service delivery is not common among mayors. Twitter is adopted and used by mayors mostly for the purposes of self-promotion and political marketing in Turkey. 相似文献
