Rethinking Digital Cultures and Divides: The Case for Reflective Media

Research exploring the means by which new media technologies can shape development within marginalized communities worldwide has began to move away from discussion limited to technical and infrastructural, to consider the interactions, beliefs, and values of local communities. Yet most projects continue to focus on enabling communities to access external information, rather than on the possibility of using media to catalyze community reflection and thereby developmental activity from within. This article shows how this promise can be actualized by providing an overview of an experimental project that made available a set of video cameras to a carefully selected group of community members in a ritualized, largely nonliterate village in Andhra Pradesh, India. It concludes that policymakers, researchers, and practitioners would benefit from considering the possibilities that reflective media hold to generate collective action and consensus building, and that these possibilities can synergize with the need to develop scalable projects.  相似文献

The liquefaction of gases was described in Part I of the series. The normal boiling point of⁴He is 4.22 K. By boiling a cryogenic liquid under low pressure one can attain a temperature lower than the normal boiling point. Since the vapour pressure of a liquid cryogen decreases rapidly with decreasing temperature, a limit is set to the lowest attainable temperature by pumping on a cryogenic bath. With a liquid⁴He bath this is 1.2 K. However using a bath of liquid³He one can attain a temperature as low as 0.3 K.  相似文献

Stability and control of floating bodies is a major aspect of navigation from ancient to modern times. It is indeed remarkable that Archimedean concepts continue to guide watercraft designers even after 2200 years! Extending Euclidean concept to solids, Archimedes solved the problem of a paraboloid floating stably but with its base inclined to the water surface. Here, we revisit Archimedes and present stability maps (A-maps) for paraboloid, solid cone and a prism. For a specific combination of geometry and specific gravity, these A-maps predict whether a solid floats vertically or in a tilted fashion; or, whether it is partially submerged.  相似文献
