Abstract Actively seeking connections between real life and information retrieval concepts will not only keep students' interest but will also improve their ability to recall key principles when faced with the next research assignment. This article defines analogies and highlights their role as a practical bibliographic instructional strategy. It further presents the use of analogies in the larger context of instructional design, followed by survey results consisting of actual analogies currently used in libraries across the United States and Canada.

This article reports three experimentsinvestigating the use of analogies in spellingacquisition. French children spelledpseudowords to dictation, some of which werephonological neighbours of words with uncommonendings (e.g., /daby/ derived from ``début'/deby/). A more frequent use of these uncommongraphemes in neighbour pseudowords than incontrol pseudowords was taken as evidence forspelling by analogy. In Experiment 1, ananalogy effect was observed in Grades 3 to 5.Younger children did not use analogies, butthey were also unable to spell most referencewords. Experiments 2 and 3 introduced areference word learning phase prior to thepseudoword dictation task. An analogy effectwas found in second graders (Experiment 2) andeven in first graders (Experiment 3) whenchildren knew how to spell most referencewords. Comparable use of analogies was observedin children with comparable lexical knowledgeindependently of their grade level oralphabetic skills. The results suggest thatchildren establish specific orthographicknowledge from the beginning of literacyacquisition and use this knowledge to generatenew word spellings as soon as it isavailable.

This review article identifies the conceptual underpinnings of current movement research in physical education. Using a hermeneutic approach, four analogies for movement education are identified: the motor program analogy, the neurobiological systems analogy, the instinctive movement analogy, and the embodied exploration analogy. Three issues related to logical consistency and its relevance for movement education are raised. The first relates to tensions between the analogies and educational policy. The second concerns differences among the four analogies. The third issue relates to the appropriateness of specific analogies for dealing with certain movement contexts. In each case, strategies for improvement are considered. The article concludes with a brief summary, along with reflections on issues that require further attention.

Physicists have known for some time that pendulum motion is a useful analogy for other physical processes. Chemists have played
with the idea from time to time but the strength of the analogy between pendulum motion and chemical processes has only received
prominent published recognition since about 1980, although there are details of the analogy that still remain to be explored.
This paper suggests that thinking of the pendulum as a type of energy converter can help students understand the energy conversions
involved in molecular collisions associated with a chemical reaction. In particular, the relationship between kinetic and
potential energy becomes vital in understanding the process of bond breaking, bond making, and enthalpy change in a chemical
reaction. As a result, the principles behind transition state theory become somewhat easier to grasp. However, the use of
the pendulum as an analogy for a reaction approaching chemical equilibrium can lead to misconceptions. The paper also discusses
the nature of catalytic feedback, periodicity and non-periodicity in oscillating chemical reactions and the extent to which
the action of a pendulum might elucidate these phenomena. Identifying the limitations as well as the strengths of an analogy
is an important consideration when an analogy is applied to a teaching and learning situation. While one is tempted to think
that pendulum action is probably more pertinent to the study of physics, there are important applications in the field of
chemistry.
