The Lord Gregson DL is an Executive Director of Fairey Holdings Limited, and a member of the House of Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology. In this article, based on his keynote speech at a conference in October 1986 organised jointly by the Open University and the Confederation of British Industry ‐‐ Open Learning Works ‐‐ and attended by about 200 people from industry and commerce, he analyses the problem facing British industry, and then, drawing on the analysis made by the Select Committee of the training performance of British industry in comparison with its competitors, suggests how open learning can contribute to an improvement in that performance. To examine the influence of pre-warming on the physiological responses to prolonged intermittent exercise in ambient temperatures of 21.5 +/- 0.6 degrees C and relative humidities of 35.7 +/- 5.4% (mean +/- s), six healthy men performed intermittent treadmill running (30-s bouts at 90% of maximal oxygen uptake separated by 30-s static recovery periods) to exhaustion after active pre-warming, passive pre-warming and pre-exercise rest (control). Exercise time to exhaustion was significantly different between all conditions (active, 51.8 +/- 7.2 min; passive, 38.5 +/- 11.1 min; control, 72.0 +/- 17.2 min; P < 0.05). These changes in performance time were closely associated with a significant decline in both the rate of heat storage and heat storage capacity (P < 0.05). Rectal temperature, heart rate and ratings of perceived exertion were significantly higher during exercise in the two pre-warming conditions than in the control condition (P < 0.05). Ratings of perceived exertion were also significantly higher during exercise following passive pre-warming compared with active pre-warming (P < 0.05). During exercise there were no significant differences in serum prolactin, plasma norepinephrine and plasma free fatty acid concentrations between conditions. We conclude that both active and passive pre-warming promote a reduction in prolonged intermittent exercise capacity in environmental temperatures of 21 degrees C compared with pre-exercise rest. These performance decrements were dependent upon the mode of pre-warming and closely reflected alterations in body heat content.  相似文献

利用酒泉市所属6个站点1959-2008年的气温和降水资料,采用滑动平均、趋势分析和MannKendall等方法,分析该地区的气候变化的特征.结果表明:在全球变暖背景下,酒泉市的气温突变明显,而降水突变不明显.近50年来,酒泉市年平均气温和各个季节的平均气温呈显著变暖趋势,其中年平均气温在90年代中后期发生了突变,酒泉市东部的突变年份早于西部的突变年份;酒泉市年降水量呈微弱增长趋势,酒泉市东部的增长幅度略小于西部.这表明气候突变在酒泉市不同的地区会有不同的体现,突变时间不同步.  相似文献

The many changes in today's workplace argue for equivalent changes in educating human resource development (HRD) professionals. The need for HRD curricular changes to be thought out fully and future-focused warrants the use of systematic methods for formulating, solving, and learning more about how to formulate and solve curriculum problems. Deliberative inquiry is such a method. This research methodology is directed toward curricular decision-making as it occurs within a specific context and, simultaneously, toward learning how to formulate and solve such problems. This study focuses on how faculty members in one university department used the problem formulation phase of deliberative inquiry to assess future needs for their HRD specialization. The article first overviews the research methodology of deliberative inquiry and then describes the systematic approach-subject matter analysis-that was used to structure the problem formulation relative to HRD curricular needs. The problem formulation process clarified stakeholders' values. It also resulted in reframing the situation, which led to new insights about the issues facing the HRD curriculum and ways to address them.  相似文献

Abstract

Twelve healthy participants performed two identical high-intensity 40 km cycling trials (morning and evening) under controlled laboratory conditions. Echocardiograms and venous blood samples were collected before and after each exercise bout. Cardiac electro-mechanical-delay (cEMD) was measured as QRS-complex onset to peak systolic (S’) and early diastolic (E’) tissue velocities. Myocardial strain and strain rates were assessed in longitudinal, circumferential and radial planes at the left ventricular apex and base. Cardiac troponin I (cTnI) and N-terminal Pro-Brain Natriuretic Peptide (NT-proBNP) were assessed as biomarkers of cardiomyocyte damage and wall stress. cEMD was lengthened after both morning (S’: 160 ± 30 vs. 193 ± 27; E’: 478 ± 60 vs. 620 ± 87, P < 0.05) and evening (S’: 155 ± 29 vs. 195 ± 31; E’: 488 ± 42 vs. 614 ± 61, P < 0.05) trials. A reduction in peak S’ (morning: 6.96 ± 1.12 vs. 6.66 ± 0.89; evening: 7.09 ± 0.94 vs. 7.02 ± 0.76) was correlated with cEMD (r = ?0.335, P < 0.05). Peak longitudinal strain was reduced, atrial strain rates were sporadically increased in both trials post-cycling. cTnI was elevated in only two participants (0.04 µg · L?1, 0.03 µg · L?1), whilst NT-proBNP was below the clinical cut-off point in all participants. Prolonged-cycling resulted in a lengthening of cEMD, small changes in aspects of left ventricular deformation and sporadic increases in cardiac biomarkers.
