The notion that journalists in an interconnected world increasingly share values typically associated with the so-called “professional model” has gained considerable currency with scholars arguing that ideas such as a belief in journalistic autonomy, public service, objectivity, and the significance of ethics are widely espoused by journalists on a global scale. Underlying this conceptualization is a taken-for-granted assumption regarding the adoption of journalistic values that originated in Western democracies which neglects how they are embraced in non-Western contexts. This paper examines newsroom values in India’s regional television channels, which have emerged as a major news source in the country. Findings indicate that in the case of Indian regional television, local socio-political and economic factors undermine the adoption of professional norms derived from the Anglo-European model by Indian journalists who see such norms as having little functional value or relevance to their work. 相似文献

In 2004, Ray Land produced extensive literature on the 12 orientations of academic developers. These orientations provided academic developers with a useful tool through which they have been able to better articulate their roles and their place in academia. We have used the orientations model to establish, compare, and contrast the identity of sixteen academic developers from the UK and from Japan. The findings reveal that research is a key orientation recognised by both groups, although is expressed differently by academic developers from the two countries. The political strategist orientation was considered important amongst managers irrespective of their cultural backgrounds. 相似文献

This summative/programmatic essay outlines how the field of International Communication today is underpinned by a central concern with issues of “culture.” An epistemic model for how to understand this new use of culture is sketched, arguing that the term “culture” operationalizes issues of nationalism, modernism, capitalism, postmodernism and post colonialism. The relationship of this model for media forms such as television is then undertaken. Detailed End Notes engage with relevant literature from the field of International Communication. 相似文献

Improving course evaluations to improve instruction and complex learning in higher education 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Recent research has touted the benefits of learner-centered instruction, problem-based learning, and a focus on complex learning.
Instructors often struggle to put these goals into practice as well as to measure the effectiveness of these new teaching
strategies in terms of mastery of course objectives. Enter the course evaluation, often a standardized tool that yields little
practical information for an instructor, but is nonetheless utilized in making high-level career decisions, such as tenure
and monetary awards to faculty. The present researchers have developed a new instrument to measure teaching and learning quality
(TALQ). In the current study of 464 students in 12 courses, if students agreed that their instructors used First Principles
of Instruction and also agreed that they experienced academic learning time (ALT), then students were about 5 times more likely
to achieve high levels of mastery of course objectives and 26 times less likely to achieve low levels of mastery, according to independent instructor assessments. TALQ can measure improvements in use of First Principles in
teaching and course design. The feedback from this instrument can assist teachers who wish to implement the recommendation
made by Kuh et al. (2007) that universities and colleges should focus their assessment efforts on factors that influence student success. 相似文献

As digital technologies have practically annihilated entry barriers in the field of journalism, the industry has seen the rise of many digitally native news media startups. Many of these startups are hyperlocal media, usually started by former journalists or concerned residents to provide news to their neighborhoods. Little research exists on entrepreneurship and news media and even less research exists on how these former journalists and/or concerned residents step into these new work roles and make sense of their new responsibilities. This paper explores these individuals’ work-role transition and professional identity negotiation. Analyses of in-depth interviews revealed the respondents tried to make sense of their work in relation to their professional identity by melding their responsibilities with their image of who they are. Thus, they create holistic, positive, professional identities that are more reflective of their new work and roles yet not too different from their idea of who they are as professionals. 相似文献

Numerous instructional design models have been proposed over the past several decades. Instead of focusing on the design process
(means), this study investigated how learners perceived the quality of instruction they experienced (ends). An electronic
survey instrument containing nine a priori scales was developed. Students responded from 89 different undergraduate and graduate
courses at multiple institutions (n = 140). Data analysis indicated strong correlations between student self-reports on academic learning time, how much they
learned, First Principles of Instruction, their satisfaction with the course, perceptions of their mastery of course objectives,
and global course ratings. Most importantly, these scales measure principles with which instructional developers and teachers
can evaluate their products and courses, regardless of design processes used: provide authentic tasks for students to do;
activate prior learning; demonstrate what is to be learned; provide repeated opportunities for students to successfully complete
authentic tasks with coaching and feedback; and help students integrate what they have learned into their personal lives.

ABSTRACTThis study addresses the issue of sampling biases in social media data-driven communication research. The authors demonstrate how supervised machine learning could reduce Twitter sampling bias induced from “proxy-population mismatch”. Particularly, this study used the Random Forest (RF) classifier to disentangle tweet samples representative of general publics’ activities from non-general—or institutional—activities. By applying RF classifier models to Twitter data sets relevant to four news events and a randomly pooled dataset, the study finds systematic differences between general user samples and institutional user samples in their messaging patterns. This article calls for disentangling Twitter user samples when ordinary user behaviors are the focus of research. It also builds on the development of machine learning modeling in the context of communication research. 相似文献
