The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine how district leaders of two school systems in the USA describe an effective principal. Membership categorisation analysis revealed that district leaders believed an effective principal had four major categories of characteristics: (1) documented characteristics (having a track record and being a good manager), (2) instructional skills (instructional leadership and data leadership), (3) interpersonal skills (team player and community leader) and (4) perceptual characteristics (being a perfect fit for school and passionate leader). Based on the findings, a graphical model of portraying an ‘effective principal’ from the point of view of district leaders is constructed. Implications for policy, research, practice and leader preparation are offered. 相似文献

Faculty satisfaction is considered an important factor of quality in online courses. A study was conducted to identify and confirm factors affecting the satisfaction of online faculty at a small research university, and to develop and validate an instrument that can be used to measure perceived faculty satisfaction in the context of the online learning environment. The online faculty satisfaction survey (OFSS) was developed and administered to all instructors who had taught an online course in fall 2007 or spring 2008 at a small research university in the USA. One hundred and two individuals completed the web‐based questionnaire. Results confirm that three factors affect satisfaction of faculty in the online environment: student‐related, instructor‐related, and institution‐related factors. 相似文献

Within the framework of cognitive learning theories, instructional design manipulations have primarily been investigated under
tightly controlled laboratory conditions. We carried out two experiments, where the first experiment was conducted in a restricted
system-paced setting and is therefore in line with the majority of empirical studies in the learning sciences. However, the
second experiment was done in an ecologically more valid classroom setting, with students working at their own pace with the
instructional material embedded in a professional hypermedia learning environment. Both dealt with the same topic in the domain
of biological education, namely the structure and functioning of the enzyme ATP-Synthase. In both experiments, the educational
value of three- versus two-dimensional animations as well as of visual cues was investigated in a 2 × 2 factorial design.
Students’ understanding was facilitated by the presence of a 3D-representation format under tightly controlled conditions
only. Regarding the ecologically more valid classroom setting, the 2D format tended to foster understanding more efficiently
than the 3D format. The implementation of visual cues enhanced the amount students remembered in both experiments. Our results
indicate that the results of tightly controlled laboratory conditions may not be easily generalized to naturalistic classroom
settings. 相似文献

Practitioner notes
What is already known about this topic- University transitions to online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic were undertaken by faculty and students who had little online learning experience.
- The transition to online learning was often described as having a negative influence on students' learning experience and mental health.
- Varieties of cognitive load are known predictors of effective online learning experiences and satisfaction.
- Information overload and perceptions of technical abilities are demonstrated to predict students' difficulty and satisfaction with online learning.
- Students express negative attitudes towards factors that influence information overload, technical factors, and asynchronous course formats.
- Communication quantity was not found to be a significant factor in predicting either perceived difficulty or negative attitudes.
- We identify ways that educators in higher education can improve their online offerings and implementations during future disruptions.
- We offer insights into student experience concerning online learning environments during an abrupt transition.
- We identify design factors that contribute to effective online delivery, educators in higher education can improve students' learning experiences during difficult periods and abrupt transitions to online learning.

The current study examined how planned happenstance skills (i.e., curiosity, flexibility, persistence, optimism, and risk-taking) changed during school-to-work transition and how career-related variables were associated with the initial levels and change rates of planned happenstance skills. In a sample of 307 South Korean college students, all planned happenstance skills except for risk-taking decreased over time. Furthermore, some of the career-related variables were associated with the initial level and the change rates of planned happenstance skills. In sum, the current study suggests that utilizing planned happenstance skills may be a worthwhile pursuit during school-to-work transition. 相似文献

A grounded theory was utilized to develop a model of stress and coping experienced by recent immigrants to the United States.
Maximum variation sampling was used to gather data from 20 leaders within immigrant and refugee communities in a Midwest U.S.
city. A theoretical model was developed by identifying causal conditions, contexts, intervening conditions, and consequences
related to experiences of stress and coping. Specific propositions in regard to the process of stress, coping, and adaptation
among recent immigrants were made. Implications for clinical services and research with this population are considered. 相似文献

Fluid shear stress (FSS) plays a critical role in regulating endothelium function and maintaining vascular homeostasis. Current microfluidic devices for studying FSS effects on cells either separate high shear stress zone and low shear stress zone into different culturing chambers, or arranging the zones serially along the flow direction, which complicates subsequent data interpretation. In this paper, we report a diamond shaped microfluidic shear device where the high shear stress zone and the low shear stress zone are arranged in parallel within one culturing chamber. Since the zones with different shear stress magnitudes are aligned normal to the flow direction, the cells in one stress group are not substantially affected by the flow-induced cytokine/chemokine releases by cells in the other group. Cell loading experiments using human umbilical vein endothelial cells show that the device is able to reveal stress magnitude-dependent and loading duration-dependent cell responses. The co-existence of shear stress zones with varied magnitudes within the same culturing chamber not only ensures that all the cells are subject to the identical culturing conditions, but also allows the resemblance of the differential shear stress pattern in natural arterial conditions. The device is expected to provide a new solution for studying the effects of heterogeneous hemodynamic patterns in the onset and progression of various vascular diseases. 相似文献

Irrational beliefs have been linked to negative unhealthy emotions that can contribute to occupational burnout. Maladaptive cognitive schemas, such as irrational beliefs, are theorized to interfere with an appraisal of the perceived balance of resources and demands. The aim of the current study is to investigate the extent to which irrational beliefs account for occupational burnout among high school teachers when considering school resources, job demands, and teacher characteristics. A sample of 79 high school teachers, primarily from New York and New Jersey, completed self‐report questionnaires measuring burnout, the perception of school demands and availability of resources, and irrational beliefs. Among school‐based characteristics, correlational analyses indicated that burnout was positively related to school demands (i.e., student disrespect and student lack of attentiveness) and negatively related to school resources (i.e., support from the administration and colleagues), supporting previous research findings. Among teacher characteristics, burnout was negatively related to self‐efficacy and positively related to irrational beliefs. Results from regression analyses indicated that, whereas irrational beliefs were predictive of teacher burnout, they did not moderate the relationship between demands and burnout. Implications, limitations, and directions for future directions for research are discussed. 相似文献

This study examined the perception of children’s internalising and externalising behaviours by Russian teachers, mothers and school psychologists. The participants rated their agreement about the causes, seriousness and recommended interventions for the problem behaviour of a fictitious girl/boy described in two vignettes. Mixed ANOVAs indicated that all the respondents attributed externalising behaviours to social causes to a greater degree than internalising behaviours. Compared to mothers and psychologists, teachers perceived both types of behaviours as more serious; however, they downplayed their own role in the child’s problems. Psychological help was more popular among school psychologists than among mothers. Correlational analyses demonstrated problem- and respondent-specific associations between casual attributions and recommended interventions. Implications for educational practice are discussed. 相似文献
