This article explores the localisation of the global and European discourse of educational governance in the Greek education system through the changes that have been introduced in the field of education administration since 2009 by the then socialist government. Our research aims to contribute to the critical policy literature on the spreading marketisation and privatisation in the governing of education around the world and in Europe – through the adoption of New Public Management and Educational Leadership models. In developing our theoretical perspective, we use the Foucauldian concepts of governmentality and discourse, and in order to conceptualise power and control relations in the organisation, transmission, acquisition, and evaluation of pedagogical knowledge, we draw on Bernstein's theory of symbolic control. Our study has examined how the field of education administration is governed through power and knowledge transformations. We trace these transformations by analysing systematically the pedagogic discourse through which the global governance discourse is relayed and becomes a ‘regime of truth’ within public policy and practice in Greece. We argue that such changes have significant implications for everyday educational practice and for the kinds of knowledge that are considered legitimate, and they may affect educational professionals' subjectivities in fundamental ways.  相似文献

Counseling centers are under intense pressure to prevent student suicide. When a student dies by suicide, the counseling center practitioner may be held liable as though all such deaths are ultimately preventable. Expectations that suicide can be prevented 100% of the time conflict with the actual capabilities of treatment providers and disregard their limited power to control the behavior of others. These expectations also fail to recognize that mental health professionals’ ability to accurately predict suicide is no better than chance. Nonetheless, the unattainable demands placed on clinicians do not originate with higher education but from the treatment community itself. Some of the consequences of these high expectations regarding the behavior of clinicians are reviewed. A plea is made for the treatment community to adopt more reasonable expectations internally and to promote them outwardly among stakeholders.  相似文献

The authors outline a four-factor model and philosophy for college mental health services that addresses the loss of comprehensiveness in some centers due to changes in organizational structure. Given research on demand for services and retention of those seen in centers, emphasis is placed in particular upon the value of consultation, outreach, and training work across the entire campus community. The model challenges some assumptions made by proponents of integrated care, including its definition, and illustrates the benefits of establishing and maintaining a fully comprehensive college counseling service.  相似文献

Treating suicidality is one of the most challenging situations managed by college and university counseling centers. The first edition of Bongar’s (1991) The Suicidal Patient: Clinical and Legal Standards of Care, a compendium of empirical knowledge and clinical research regarding standard of care in the treatment of suicidality, was soon considered a valuable resource in the field. The volume was pivotal in the arena of clinical practice because, in addition to compiling state of the art information, it also positioned itself as a benchmark for determining whether standard of care has been met in treatment of suicidal people. Now in its third edition (Bongar & Sullivan, 2013), this resource continues to inform clinical practice. This article examines several noteworthy changes across the three editions of this seminal work. What has changed, possible trends suggested by the changes, and resulting implications of these changes are examined. Of particular importance are changes that represent significant developments in the field or make relatively new assertions of what constitutes sound practice. These trends, changes, and assertions regarding standard of care are discussed in terms of their relevance to the counseling center setting. In the third edition there are several instances in which Bongar and Sullivan (2013) clearly extended beyond reporting observations about clinical practice and arguably moved into the realm of attempting to set norms for standard of care. Even though these new assertions may essentially be the authors’ opinions, they may be treated as fact by regulators, expert witnesses, attorneys, and others in determining whether standard of care has been met in specific cases.  相似文献
