It has been shown (Lawrence, S. (2001). Online or invisible? Nature, 411, 521) that journal articles which have been posted without charge on the internet are more heavily cited than those which have not been. Using data from the NASA Astrophysics Data System (ads.harvard.edu) and from the ArXiv e-print archive at Cornell University (arXiv.org) we examine the causes of this effect.  相似文献   

Development and implementation of a thesaurus for the visual sciences

A thesaurus has been developed to serve as the integrating unit for the computerized information storage and retrieval system of the Vision Information Center. The Center maintains records of information in the visual sciences which are available to the user in the forms of computer-assisted instruction, literature retrieval, and patient records. The numerical coding system used in the thesaurus permits seven levels of specificity; this specificity is required for depth of indexing, as well as to limit the retrieval to those bibliographic citations which are relevant to a highly specific search request. The flexible design of the thesaurus facilitates frequent revision and addition of new terminology.  相似文献

Recent writing on the subject of ethnography has sought to examine the field not only as a place where research is carried out, but also as a methodological construction. While this writing emphasizes the extent to which people's experiences of community and culture can no longer be necessarily understood in relation to geographically based locations, it often continues to assert the "legacy of the field" (Clifford, 1997, p. 88) and its accompanying expectations and practices. In this article, I draw on my experience of doing ethnographic research in the textual community of 'zines in order to challenge the assumption that ethnographic fieldwork is necessarily dependent on physical displacement, and face-to-face encounters with our research participants. Specific attention is paid to the epistemological and ethical issues that emerge when one chooses to carry out research in textual communities. Intentionally foregrounding the parallels between the textual community of 'zines and the virtual communities associated with the Internet, this article also raises important questions for ethnographers carrying out research in networked environments.  相似文献

Getting Academically Underprepared Students Ready through College Developmental Education: Does the Course Delivery Format Matter?

Addressing high demand for developmental math instruction and low rates of successful completing of the developmental coursework, with cost and space constraints, has been an ongoing challenge for postsecondary institutions. With advances in online instructional technology, particularly those based on artificial intelligence, web-based instruction is increasingly considered as a way to alleviate these burdens. This is among one of the first efforts that uses a quasi-experimental design to compare the academic outcomes of students who take a developmental mathematics course in a blended setting that combines face-to-face instruction with an online intelligent tutorial system, ALEKS, to the academic outcomes of students who take the same course in a fully online setting. Results suggest that students receiving online-only instruction perform worse on the final exam and receive lower course grades. However, a cost-effectiveness analysis suggests that fully online instruction has both a lower cost per student enrolled and a lower cost per student passing the course.  相似文献

Magazine Publishing in Transition: Unique Challenges for Multi-Media Platforms

In this article, the author discusses opportunities and challenges facing the magazine industry as it migrates from print to digital distribution models. While the industry can achieve outsized returns in the digital realm based on the unique content and brand equity developed in its traditional business, multiple hurdles confront publishing industry executives in the process. The changing landscape of data access, consumer engagement, production workflows and magazine industry business models are all discussed. An analogy to the television industry’s efforts to address new technology is used. Meat processing company staff as innovation intermediaries: developing a framework from New Zealand’s red meat sector

Purpose: Meat processing companies have the potential to raise farm and sector productivity by directly working with farmers. This study assesses how commercial companies can undertake the roles of innovation intermediaries to increase productivity in New Zealand’s sheep and beef sector.

Design/methodology/approach: This study uses a case study approach from the red meat sector in New Zealand. The case study included the development of a trial agricultural extension system established by staff from meat processing companies acting as innovation intermediaries, providing opportunities for skill development and knowledge transfer for farmers. From the case study, a framework is developed which illustrates how company staff can undertake the role of an innovation intermediary.

Findings: (1) Meat processing company staff are able to successfully undertake the role of an innovation intermediary; (2) flexibility is necessary, as staff undertook each of the functions to different degrees depending on their existing skills and knowledge of agricultural extension and the time available within their current job; and (3) adaptability is important, as staff adapted the project to meet the needs of both farmers and their employer.

Practical implications: Balancing commercial and extension roles is challenging. The framework could assist companies to clarify how individual company staff could successfully undertake specific roles.

Theoretical implications: This paper discusses factors influencing which innovation intermediary roles and functions are optimally undertaken by staff within or outside a meat processing company.

Originality/value: Analysing the role of an innovation intermediary from the perspective of meat processing company staff balancing their extension and commercial role.  相似文献
