Rayner & Riding (1997) identified two complementary approaches to the study of individual differences in learning; process-based models include the notion of 'approaches to studying', whilst cognition-centred model encompass 'cognitive styles'. A number of authors have posited theoretical relationships between these two aspects of learning (for example: Curry, 1983; Riding, 1997). The present study sought to provide empirical elaboration for Curry's 'onion' model and Riding's 'cognitive control' model. It employed a questionnaire survey type approach and used the Cognitive Style Index (CSI) which is a measure of intuition-analysis style (Allinson & Hayes, 1996) and a short form of the Approaches to Studying Inventory (ASI) advocated by Gibbs et al. (1988) augmented by a collaborative scale suggested by the author. The hypothesised factor structure of Gibbs' short form of the ASI was not confirmed, however, the collaborative scale appeared reasonably robust and may warrant further development. A number of relationships were observed: females perceived themselves as being more analytical than males; analysts adopted a deeper approach than intuitives; intuitives had a stronger preference for collaborative approaches than analysts; and females were more achievement-oriented than males. The results are discussed with respect to the theoretical frameworks of Curry and of Riding and the practical implications for student learning in higher education.  相似文献

This paper explores the contribution of Vico's philosophy of imagination to a practical recognition of the importance of the imagination in the conduct of human affairs in general and in education in particular. Vico's claim that the imagination is an essential component of our human nature together with the claim that all human knowledge ultimately has its origins in the imaginative activities of our forebears (a claim which has received empirical support from recent research on the history of oral cultures) provides us with the necessary philosophical basis for establishing a logical connection between imagination and education. If accepted, such a perspective would, in my view, dispel much of the skepticism that still surrounds the role of the imagination in contemporary education.  相似文献

A group of 83 undergraduates enrolled in interpersonal skills training groups were administered the Kagan Affective Sensitivity Scale—Form E-80 (KASS-E80). At the end of the semester they selected peers whom they believed would best be able to help another person deal with an emotional or interpersonal problem. First, the KASS-E80 scores for those frequently chosen and those unchosen were compared with a group chosen with moderate frequency within the sample (middle comparison group). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) planned comparisons showed significantly lower scores for the unchosen group but not significantly higher scores for the frequently chosen group when both were compared to the middle comparison group. Second, when the two extreme groups were each compared to the population of KASS-E80 examinees, one-sample z tests showed that the frequently chosen group significantly outscored the population of KASS-E80 examinees, whereas the unchosen group's scores were significantly lower. Implications for prediction and selection of counselor trainees were discussed.  相似文献
