Neuroanatomy education is a challenging field which could benefit from modern innovations, such as augmented reality (AR) applications. This study investigates the differences on test scores, cognitive load, and motivation after neuroanatomy learning using AR applications or using cross-sections of the brain. Prior to two practical assignments, a pretest (extended matching questions, double-choice questions and a test on cross-sectional anatomy) and a mental rotation test (MRT) were completed. Sex and MRT scores were used to stratify students over the two groups. The two practical assignments were designed to study (1) general brain anatomy and (2) subcortical structures. Subsequently, participants completed a posttest similar to the pretest and a motivational questionnaire. Finally, a focus group interview was conducted to appraise participants’ perceptions. Medical and biomedical students (n = 31); 19 males (61.3%) and 12 females (38.7%), mean age 19.2 ± 1.7 years participated in this experiment. Students who worked with cross-sections (n = 16) showed significantly more improvement on test scores than students who worked with GreyMapp-AR (P = 0.035) (n = 15). Further analysis showed that this difference was primarily caused by significant improvement on the cross-sectional questions. Students in the cross-section group, moreover, experienced a significantly higher germane (P = 0.009) and extraneous cognitive load (P = 0.016) than students in the GreyMapp-AR group. No significant differences were found in motivational scores. To conclude, this study suggests that AR applications can play a role in future anatomy education as an add-on educational tool, especially in learning three-dimensional relations of anatomical structures.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Using cross-sectional data from 504 students from four Kenyan universities, this study evaluates the indirect effect of brand personality on the relationship between social media and students’ behavioral intentions to enroll in postgraduate studies. Additionally, the study examines the moderating effect of attitude on the relationship between social media and brand personality, social media and students’ behavioral intentions, brand personality and students’ behavioral intentions. Finally, it investigates the moderating effect of attitude on the indirect process of brand personality on the relationship between social media and students’ behavioral intentions. The study is guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior, Technology Acceptance Model and Self Congruity Theory. Process Macro is used to analyze data. Results indicate that social media significantly predicts students’ behavioral intentions and this relationship is partially mediated by brand personality. Besides, attitude moderates the relationship between social media and students’ behavioral intentions and also the relationship between brand personality and students’ behavioral intentions. Finally, attitude has a conditional effect on the indirect relationship between social media and student’s behavioral intentions via brand personality and this effect is much stronger with a higher level of attitude. These findings contribute new knowledge to literature and theory.  相似文献

Heart failure (HF) is a frequent chronic disease in elderly people and represents a major health and economic burden. The accurate diagnosis of HF and the identification of high risk patients is mandatory to select the appropriate therapy and care. HF is associated to cardiac remodeling and inflammation and to the release of neurohormones. If natriuretic peptides remain the biomarkers of choice for the diagnosis and the prognosis of HF, several biomarkers related to cardiac remodeling and inflammation are available for testing and may add valuable information for the risk estimation of HF patients and for the selection of the most appropriated therapy. Furthermore, the quest for new efficient biomarkers of cardiac remodeling and inflammation is still ongoing and new candidates have been identified for a potential use in daily clinical practices. However, before their potential translation to routine parameters several challenges ranging form the analytical validation to the cost-effectiveness estimation should be considered.  相似文献

This Special Topic section is on dielectrophoresis, a growing area of widespread interest and relevance to the microfluidics and nanofluidics community.There was a time when the arrival of a telegram from the local post office would foreshadow a step-function change in one’s equilibrium. An internet service provider can now deliver the same effect, as illustrated by an unexpected e-mail from Leslie Yeo inquiring if I would “be interested in guest editing a special issue of Biomicrofluidics on recent advances in dielectrophoresis (DEP).” Flattery directed towards vanity can produce interesting results—which I hope this special issue of Biomicrofluidics demonstrates. The rationale for this special issue is the belief of the journal’s Editors (Dr. Chia Chang and Dr. Leslie Yeo) that dielectrophoresis is a growing area of widespread interest and relevance to the microfluidics and nanofluidics community. Papers, both fundamental and applied, were solicited from the leaders working across this broad interdisciplinary area of research. I was delighted by the positive responses of those whose invited contributions appear in this special issue—efforts certainly not motivated by vanity but through enthusiasm for the subject. Some of those invited to contribute were unable to do so because of other demands on their time. Ongoing advances being made in DEP, especially in its various applications, will surely merit another special issue in the future and hopefully include contributions from those unable to do so now.Two of the papers in this special issue address fundamental aspects of dielectrophoresis (DEP), namely the influences on DEP from electrical double-layers and from particle-particle interactions. Consideration of electrical double layers associated with charged particle surfaces is particularly important for nanoparticles because their effective polarizabilities, associated with field-induced dynamics of the counterions and co-ions in the double layer, can dominate over the intrinsic polarizability of the particle itself. This can influence, for example, to what extent the observation of changes in the DEP crossover frequency (marking the transition between positive and negative DEP) can be relied upon in new immunoassays based on the DEP behavior of functionalized nanoparticles. By considering the electrodynamics of double layers, Basuray et al.1 propose a theory to predict how the DEP crossover frequency will vary as a function of particle size and the ionic strength of the suspending electrolyte. In their paper, Sancho et al.2 derive a theoretical model to describe how particle-particle interactions (e.g., “pearl-chaining”) influence the DEP crossover frequency value. This model also describes well the changes in electrorotation and a newly observed precession effect as particles approach each other under the influence of a rotating field.DEP at the nanoscale is also addressed in contributions from the groups of Ralph Hölzel, Junya Suehiro, and Karan Kaler. Thus, Henning et al.3 describe a new method, based on the measurement of capacitance changes between planar microelectrodes, for the automatic acquisition of the DEP properties of nanoparticles without the need for labeling protocols or visual observations. Suehiro4 describes how DEP can be employed as a bottom-up approach for fabricating nanomaterial-based devices such as a carbon nanotube gas sensor and a ZnO nanowire photosensor. Kaler et al.5 describe how the DEP manipulation of miniscule amounts of polar aqueous samples, a method known as liquid-DEP, can be used for on-chip bioassays, such as nucleic acid analysis, and through parallel sample processing offer the potential for conducting automated multiplexed assays. The use of DEP to selectively trap and separate cells has been investigated over many years, and contributions from the groups of Hywel Morgan, Ana Valero, Masau Washizu, and Gerard Markx describe the latest advances and applications. Thomas et al.6 describe a new automated DEP cell trap design for the isolation, concentration, separation, and recovery of human osteoblast-like cells from a heterogeneous population. Recovery of small populations of human osteoblast-like cells with a purity of 100% is demonstrated. A cell-sorting device, based on the opposition of DEP forces that discriminates between cell types according to such properties as their membrane permittivity and cytoplasm conductivity, is described by Valeroet al.7 The versatility of the device is demonstrated by synchronizing a yeast cell culture at a particular phase of the cell cycle. Gel et al.8 describe a DEP-assisted cell trapping method for fusing pairs of cells in an array of micro-orifices. This method produces not only a high yield of viable cell fusants, but also allows for subsequent study of postfusion cell development. Zhu et al.9 describe a DEP-based microfluidic separation system in which dead and active cells can be collected from a given cell suspension, whilst at the same time eluting dormant cells. In the second paper from Gerard Markx’s group, Zhu et al.10 demonstrate that the rate-limiting resuscitation of a colony of dormant bacteria is determined by the diffusion of a resuscitation-promoting factor into the colony interior. This study involved the artificial engineering of different sizes and shapes of bacterial aggregates using DEP forces. Finally, in my own contribution,11 I have attempted to summarize the growing output of DEP publications in terms of their contributions to the theory, technology, and applications of DEP.  相似文献

It can be argued that agricultural science is one of the original forms of science education. However, over the past century, agricultural science education has habitually been perceived as an educational venue meant solely for production agriculturalists. When examining modern agricultural education we find it to be a minority within the broader field of science education, contradicting its historically stout scientific standing within the sciences. This educational shift leaves one to ponder the historic development of contemporary agricultural education. To gain deeper insight into these questions we reviewed the historical evolution of agricultural education within the United States. We then examined the professional habitus, or cultural nuances, associated with contemporary agricultural education. Next, we considered potential outcomes associated with the profession embracing post-modern perspectives within mainstream science and community-based education. Finally, we call for critical venues within agriculture education to question the status quo and challenge the acceptance of commonly held views.  相似文献

Deaf and hearing college students' mean reaction times (RTs) were compared on a mental calculation task in which they had to verify the accuracy of solutions to addition and multiplication problems. The deaf students were divided into higher and lower readers. Higher deaf readers and hearing students had similar RTs and accuracy on addition problems; their RTs were greater in the voicing interference mode than in the manual tapping interference mode. The lower deaf readers showed no RT differences between the two interference modes and had consistently lower RT performance and score accuracy across the verification tasks. On the verification task for multiplication problems, all participants showed a greater RT effect for manual tapping. The lower deaf readers were significantly less accurate on multiplication problems.  相似文献

This article is a report of elementary school teachers' beliefs about and uses of text material in science. Survey results from 522 K-8 teachers from 299 schools in the United States, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands were analyzed along three dimensions: teacher attitudes toward teaching of reading in science; teacher beliefs and understanding about models of reading, factors influencing science reading and reading skills; and teacher use of various teaching strategies. Results suggest that teachers do not see reading science as different from any other narrative material. And though most agreed to the importance of having students do activities to support and enhance the use of text material, responses suggest that covering topics is still a concern for most elementary teachers.  相似文献

The study examined the ability of deaf and hearing students at the college and middle school levels to discern and apply knowledge of printed word morphology. There were 70 deaf and 58 hearing participants. A two-part paper-and-pencil test of morphological knowledge examined subjects' ability to (a) perceive segmentation of morphemes within printed words and (b) recognize meanings associated with various printed morphemes. The hearing college students performed best on every dependent measure of the two-part test. The deaf college students scored significantly lower than the hearing college students but similarly to the hearing middle school students. Deaf middle school students consistently scored the lowest on both parts of the test. While all students' performance declined as the difficulty of the morphemic content increased within both tasks, the decline was greatest among middle school deaf students. Although segmentation and semantic analysis skills necessary to morphographic decoding were apparent in the deaf students, their mastery levels fell significantly below those of the hearing subjects.  相似文献

The Transition to Reaching: Mapping Intention and Intrinsic Dynamics   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9  
The onset of directed reaching demarks the emergence of a qualitatively new skill. In this study we asked how intentional reaching arises from infants' ongoing, intrinsic movement dynamics, and how first reaches become successively adapted to the task. We observed 4 infants weekly in a standard reaching task and identified the week of first arm-extended reach, and the 2 weeks before and after onset. The infants first reached at ages ranging from 12 to 22 weeks, and they used different strategies to get the toy. 2 infants, whose spontaneous movements were large and vigorous, damped down their fast, forceful movements. The 2 quieter infants generated faster and more energetic movements to lift their arms. The infants modulated reaches in task-appropriate ways in the weeks following onset. Reaching emerges when infants can intentionally adjust the force and compliance of the arm, often using muscle coactivation. These results suggest that the infant central nervous system does not contain programs that detail hand trajectory, joint coordination, and muscle activation patterns. Rather, these patterns are the consequences of the natural dynamics of the system and the active exploration of the match between those dynamics and the task.  相似文献
