Diversity Literary Awards: A Tool for Assessing an Academic Library’s Collection

Abstract

Diversity literary awards and other sources were used to create a list of high-quality titles written by and about underrepresented groups. This list was used to assess the diversity and inclusiveness of the library collections of a land-grant university in the Pacific Northwest and compare it to peer institutions. Gaps in the collection and acquisition processes were identified and will be used to improve the processes to increase the number of diverse titles added to the library’s collections.  相似文献

高校图书馆科普基地社会化服务探索——以西华师范大学图书馆为例

[目的/意义]针对我国高校图书馆社会化服务效果不佳的状况，试图寻找一种有效且能长期开展的模式，以促进高校图书馆广泛参与，更好地满足民众的文化需求。[方法/过程]以西华师范大学图书馆为例，从组织构建、运作模式、社会效益概述科普基地社会化服务模式，并分析该模式具有构建约束机制、资源保障机制与激励机制、服务渠道的畅通机制的优势。[结果/结论]在自愿的原则下，高校图书馆与省委宣传部、省社科联联合共建科普基地以开展社会化服务，通过经费多家出，协调搭台，借用科普基地完善的管理体制与运行机制，构建高校图书馆社会化服务的长效机制。科普基地工作已在全国广泛开展，高校图书馆作为重要的文化服务单位位于申报对象之列且容易具备申报条件。因此，科普基地社会化服务模式是一种灵活的、有效的、可操作的，且具有广泛参与机制与可持续的模式，值得推广。  相似文献

[目的/意义]在当前政府职能转变的背景下，政府与社会组织合作提供公共图书馆服务是公共图书馆管理体制改革的有效措施，也是公共图书馆事业发展的重要趋势。研究政府与社会组织的合作关系，不仅能够丰富相关理论成果，而且能为公共图书馆服务供给政社合作的发展提供参考。[目的/意义]通过文献调研、网络调研与实地调研相结合，论述公共图书馆服务供给政社合作关系的概念及特征，对公共图书馆服务供给政社合作关系中各主体的角色、政社合作关系的成因、政社合作关系的类型及形成过程进行深入分析。在此基础之上，提出公共图书馆服务供给政社合作关系可持续发展的对策。[结果/结论]良好合作关系的建立需要端正合作动机，完善合作制度，规范合作行为。  相似文献

The number of ebooks continues to grow in academic libraries. Ebooks have many advantages that make them attractive as a library resource. However, ebooks also have restrictions. These include use and sharing restrictions, license restrictions, and technological barriers. Some students also prefer print books for specific tasks. Usage Comparison between an English-Language and a French-Language E-Monograph Collection in a Bilingual Canadian University

Abstract

This article reports the results of a quantitative and systematic analysis comparing usage rates between English-language and French-language e-monograph titles at Laurentian University, Canada. Full-text viewings were collected as usage metrics. English-language e-monographs exhibited medium strength linear relationships between collection size and usage. On the other hand, French-language e-monographs exhibited weak linear relationships between collection size and usage. The French-language e-monograph collection experienced a higher rate of full-text use, relative to size. The cost-per-viewing ratio for the English-language e-monograph collection was higher than those that calculated for the French-language collection.  相似文献

Academic library collections have been built and shaped by a focus on dominant voices and perspectives. In order for collections to reflect the value librarianship places on diversity as well as represent multiple perspectives and serve users of diverse backgrounds and identities, collections need to be assessed for coverage of content related to diversity. Abstract

In 2016, J. Murrey Atkins Library at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte opened a reservable study room where student parents and caregivers can study with their children on campus. In 2018, the library opened a second family-friendly study room to meet the needs of our growing campus community. To inform the room design, the library conducted a mixed methods research study that included a user survey, an examination of room reservation and usage data, and one-on-one user interviews. ABSTRACT

Libraries use surveys and other instruments to gather feedback from their users. However, with competition from many other campus entities requesting input, how can survey fatigue be avoided? To gather this feedback, the Social Sciences Reference Desk utilized a short, fun and easy method. Each week for 10 weeks during the fall semester of 2017, the reference assistants wrote a survey question on a whiteboard and provided sticky notes for patrons to write their answers. The survey provided valuable information about patrons’ needs and expectations. It also fostered changes that were easily implemented to improve the delivery of library services.  相似文献
