| 摘 要： | 1904年,"癸卯学制"的公布标志着中国近代义务教育的发轫。但义务教育体制未能在短期内造成,传统私塾教育形式也未即刻退出历史舞台,近代教育呈现新旧并存的二元格局。私塾对义务教育产生了两个方面的作用:其一,辅助和补充作用。在新式小学堂没有得到普及时,私塾继续扮演了它普及蒙学的重要角色;在新式小学堂无法满足基础教育需求时,经过改良的私塾对义务教育形成有益补充。其二,阻碍作用。私塾的大量存在,阻碍了义务教育在乡村的普及;私塾改良往往流于口号,无益于义务教育的全面落实。私塾和学堂并存互动的历史,有助于反思和推进当前的基础教育改革。
