In contrast to other career choices, the teaching profession seems familiar to those interested in teaching because they have had the chance to observe teachers for years. This phenomenon is known as the apprenticeship of observation and manifests in naïve ideas and expectations of teaching among teacher students. Therefore, characteristics of students interested in becoming teachers are important for early teacher education and counselling. These characteristics include competencies and motives, but nothing is known about their relationship to each other. Following international teaching standards and the expectancy-value framework, this paper analyses associations between both. Three competencies (i.e. planning, communication and cooperation) and seven career choice motives were examined using a paper–pencil survey of 907 high school students. Altogether, 463 students were able to imagine becoming a teacher and were included in the analyses. SEM analyses showed that (1) of all the competencies, communication had the most associations with motives, (2) the motive ‘low difficulty of study’ is positively related to planning, (3) the findings regarding extrinsic motives are ambiguous, and (4) gender differences are marginal. Holding teachers accountable for other people's (students) behavior is inappropriate policy that results in ineffective teaching, diminished enthusiasm for learning, and lower levels of achievement. There are both legal and psychological reasons for this. Making teachers responsible for students' behavior absolves students of responsibility for their own actions and develops an externalized locus of control in students that leads to teacher control and student dependence. Because every person is accountable for his or her own behavior but not for what other people do, teachers must be held accountable for what they do as teachers but not for what their students do as learners. During the teaching process, a multitude of problems arise in establishing and maintaining relationships with students. The need to fully understand teaching requires more detailed and explicit knowledge regarding the ways teachers perceive and think about their classroom actions. This collective case study focuses on investigating teachers’ expectations of their teaching actions as well as the varying levels of intensity within differential teaching investments in expected teaching actions. Structured interviews were conducted with 10 primary school teachers, and the data were analysed using a primarily inductive coding scheme. The results provide a detailed exploration of two approaches, the interactional approach and the instructional approach, and their respective teaching methods. In both approaches, teachers’ investments in expected teaching actions illustrate a continuum of low and high intensities. The results may assist in gaining a better understanding of the situational demands of teaching. By being more conscious of their teaching actions, teachers can develop their pedagogical skills more deliberately. 相似文献

The article outlines a deficit in Holocaust education: The motives of the perpetrators and bystanders are often not dealt
with. In order to explore these motives, interviews with former Nazis were conducted and evaluated in the Geschichte und Erinnerung (History and Memory) research project; two of the findings are presented here. Subsequently the question of how these findings
can be applied in school teaching about National Socialism and the Holocaust is discussed. The author recommends teachers
not to expose students to whole narrations of former Nazis, but to use brief excerpts from those narrations in order to develop
an analysis of the Nazis’ motives. Ultimately, teaching about the topic of National Socialism and the Holocaust should be
integrated with students’ own narrations, with their knowledge of the topic based on family stories, family secrets, and other
