This case study addresses a workflow analysis project undertaken in the International Studies and Asia Library technical services areas of the University of Michigan Library. The analysis was an opportunity to document existing technical services practices in three primary workflow areas: acquisitions/receiving, cataloging, and cataloging maintenance. International Studies began the project independently, and subsequently consultants were hired to work with both International Studies and Asia Library to find efficiencies and barriers, identify solutions, and propose future changes in non-Roman-language cataloging workflows. This article provides an account outlining the project background, implementation, outcomes, challenges, and lessons learned.  相似文献

The relationship between reference librarians and technical services librarians has often been strained. In our changing technological and organizational environment, it is imperative that reference librarians and technical services librarians share responsibility for improving this relationship. One way for this to take place is for individuals to become more "accountable" to their colleagues. This article provides accountability guidelines for both reference and technical services librarians which, if followed, can result in increased communication and a better understanding of the roles, concerns, and needs of both reference and technical services librarians.  相似文献

What is the value of library services and resources in the college classroom? How do library instruction and collections contribute to academic teaching and learning outcomes? A chemistry instructor, instruction librarian, and technical services librarian collaborated to answer these questions by combining chemistry education and information literacy pedagogy to assess student learning. The authors developed curriculum units that teach information literacy skills and scientific literature research in a General Chemistry Laboratory course for Honors students. Their study extends beyond examining library instruction and collections assessment in isolation. Rather, their research protocol intends to contribute to student learning outcomes assessment research. The authors propose that an embedded, mixed-methodology, and longitudinal approach can be used to collect data and assess outcomes in terms that describe and measure the value of library services and resources.  相似文献

[目的/意义]技术竞争情报服务过程中双方资源投入方案的匹配程度是影响服务过程的重要因素。针对技术竞争情报服务过程中存在的服务主体与服务对象之间的协调问题,构建一种技术竞争情报服务决策方法,以使服务双方更好地开展合作。[方法/过程]在对技术竞争情报服务方案进行描述和匹配性评价的基础上,通过建立技术竞争情报服务方案组合的满意度矩阵,构建技术竞争情报服务方案匹配模型并求解,最后在考虑各个方案成功率的条件下确定技术竞争情报服务方案最优组合。[结果/结论]实际算例表明,在对技术竞争情报服务方案匹配性进行评价的基础上,运用双边满意匹配的决策方法来寻找技术竞争情报服务双方都能接受的满意方案是有效和可行的,这一方法的应用能够推动技术竞争情报服务的有效开展。  相似文献

[目的/意义]总结近年来高校图书馆在转型与发展的进程中,用户服务所呈现出的变化趋势,以期为这方面工作的开展和理论研究提供参考。[方法/过程]主要采用文献调查法和案例分析法,探讨高校图书馆用户服务体系的再构建和用户服务的发展趋势。[结果/结论]为适应信息化社会的到来,高校图书馆积极调整其职能定位,不断探索用户服务的新模式和新手段,并在此基础上重新构建用户服务体系,在这一进程中,用户服务在理念、机构、模式、内容、亮点、营销、合作等方面呈现出明显的变化趋势。  相似文献

The Internet is becoming a key player in the provision of career, job, and employment information, though it is still being readied for prime time use. Libraries and career and job services are in a transitional phase that is leading to common use of the Internet. While there is a sense of urgency to jump on the Internet bandwagon, professionals havc time to learn and assimilate this new electronic culture. This article presents a broad understanding of Internet development, discusses barriers to both learning and teaching the Internet, offers tips and methods for hurdling these barriers, and briefly describes some of the career job sites currently found on the Internet.  相似文献

This article considers CD-ROM instruction in the context of the research path in the library of the interdisciplinary academy. The article also identifies key components of postmodernism (arguing that the library is a site of postmodernism) and barriers to research imposed by library collections and services. How CD-ROMs magnify these barriers to research and offers an instructional method using the active teaching and learning method known as critical pedagogy to empower the researcher. Summary

New reference desk staffing configurations are required as reference service evolves from locating in-library resources to using and teaching the use of electronic resources. The tangible and intangible benefits achieved by scheduling technical services staff to assist at the reference desk are discussed. Intangible benefits include improved library service due to technical services staff expertise, and greater flexibility for reference desk staffing. The reference staff can also learn more about the automated library system and current processing initiatives from their technical services colleagues. Technical services staff benefits from seeing the results of their work in a public services setting and experiencing the satisfaction of helping users locate needed information. A stronger sense of library service is instilled in the “back room.” Technical services staff will also enjoy more challenge, opportunity, and variety in their work. Some tangible benefits realized at the University of Minnesota's Bio-Medical Library, which are directly related to the scheduling of technical services staff at the reference desk, are also briefly described.  相似文献

[目的/意义] 总结高校图书馆学习支持服务活动体系并建构模型,以更好地理解高校图书馆学习支持服务的整体结构和运行机理。[方法/过程] 基于实际调研和主要职能总结出高校图书馆学习支持服务的基本形式和支撑条件。以活动为基本单位,分析学习支持服务活动的运行机理,进而尝试建构高校图书馆学习支持服务活动模型。[结果/结论] 资源服务形式和素质培育形式是高校图书馆学习支持服务的基本形式,空间、技术、人员是学习支持服务的3个支撑条件,应与基本形式相结合。两种基本形式与3个支撑条件的各种组合构成了高校图书馆学习支持服务的活动体系,需要基于活动的设计和组织进行深度融合。建构了一个高校图书馆学习支持服务活动的双螺旋模型,在机理上呈现出主体性的活动推动、非线性的逻辑递进、协同化的支持服务、共生式的融合发展等特征。  相似文献

Within the past 10 years, commons have become increasingly prominent in academic libraries. Commons evolved out of the “library as a place” movement and stem from the digital revolution, increased emphasis on collaborative learning, and changing student habits and needs. The three levels of commons are information commons, learning commons, and the emerging virtual commons. Libraries implementing commons must consider the impact on reference services and staffing and be prepared for higher than anticipated use. Libraries should use both quantitative and qualitative assessment methods. Commons can revitalize the library by giving it a key role in reaching university strategic goals.  相似文献

Introduction: In 2003/4 the Information Management Research Institute, Northumbria University, conducted a research project to identify the barriers to e‐learning for health professionals and students. The project also established possible ways to overcome these barriers. The North of England Workforce Development Confederation funded the project. Methodology: The project comprised a systematic review of the literature on barriers to and solutions/critical success factors for e‐learning in the health field. Fifty‐seven references were suitable for analysis. This review was supplemented by a questionnaire survey of learners and an interview study of learning providers to ensure that data identified from the literature were grounded in reality. Results: The main barriers are: requirement for change; costs; poorly designed packages; inadequate technology; lack of skills; need for a component of face‐to‐face teaching; time intensive nature of e‐learning; computer anxiety. A range of solutions can solve these barriers. The main solutions are: standardization; strategies; funding; integration of e‐learning into the curriculum; blended teaching; user friendly packages; access to technology; skills training; support; employers paying e‐learning costs; dedicated work time for e‐learning. Conclusions: The authors argue that librarians can play an important role in e‐learning: providing support and support materials; teaching information skills; managing and providing access to online information resources; producing their own e‐learning packages; assisting in the development of other packages.  相似文献

This paper identifies the sources and channels of information in the rural areas of Bangladesh and highlights the information flow and access patterns at the village level of Comilla and Chittagong districts in Bangladesh. It proposes some suggestions for effective information services in rural area, as well as a specific model for a Bangladesh Integrated Rural Information System (BD-IRIS) to improve the information system of villagers. This study uses structured interviews through a pilot survey of 20% of the households from each village and information gathered by personal observations and other secondary sources, as well as appropriate statistical methods. A total of 155 responses is included in the study.Existing conditions of information flow and access in this case study indicate that there are problems in access in spite of interpersonal sources and channels of information. Of course, it is important to remember that the low literacy rate in the villages studied and in many similar communities presents many serious barriers. The author recommends establishing a Village Information Center (VIC) to provide integrated and concerted information services, along with an integrated rural information system for the purpose in the villages studies, and more widely, to meet the requirements of all people in villages in Bangladesh. The case study is one of very few studies focusing on the flow and access of information for rural areas of Bangladesh, particularly as regards information sources and channels, system and services. The approach can be replicated in other communities, and the proposed model for future direction to improve information system of village level people of Bangladesh could be modified for use in other countries.  相似文献
